Stitch Fix Review – My Hacks to Improve Your First Fix

Stich Fix Review - Modeling the items I received

Updated: March, 11th, 2020.

If you’re considering signing up for Stitch Fix, or you’ve tried Stitch Fix and weren’t thrilled with your items, this list of Stitch Fix hacks is for you! The main issue I’ve heard from readers (and experienced myself), is that sometimes it doesn’t feel like your stylist got your style right. And getting a box of items that are mostly misses is a pretty frustrating shopping experience.

If you aren’t familiar, Stitch Fix is a clothing and styling personal styling service. When you initially sign up, you take an in-depth survey that asks you about your clothing size, personal style, and price preferences. Your stylist handpicks five items based on your preferences within the survey. The fee for this service is $20, and that includes free shipping as well as free returns. If you keep any of the items they send you, you get to deduct the $20 fee from the total. If you keep all five items, you also get a 25% discount. Stitch Fix offers clothing for Men, Kids, Maternity, Petite, and Plus Size.

Below, you’ll find my review of my first Stitch Fix following their standard sign up and profile set up so you know exactly what to expect. And after that, I’ll share my hacks for how to make your first Stitch Fix even better than mine now that I’ve learned how to master Stitch Fix!

Stitch Fix Items

My Subscription Addiction paid for this Stitch Fix. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review products).

Each shipment comes with a free return bag. All you have to do is package up anything you want to return and send it back. Super easy.

When you first sign up for Stitch Fix, you’ll fill out a survey to give your stylist specifics on your size, style, clothing needs etc. And the best part is you can also leave notes for exactly what you are looking for. In my case, I told my stylist that I love maxi dresses and that I need bold tops that are good for filming YouTube videos. (That means eye-catching but not distracting.) As you can see on the note included from my stylist, she used that feedback!

And there are also cards for each piece to give you styling ideas.

This is the invoice that was sent. As you can see, it provides specifics on the brand, size, and price of each item. They also give instructions at the bottom for how to check out and either purchase or return your items. My total came to $253, but with the 25% off if I keep everything, it would be $189.75.

OK, here are the pieces:

Market & Spruce Hans Crochet Front Top – Cost to Keep $58

(Size Medium)

This top is fully lined on the torso, with see-through sleeves.

I like this as a new take on a basic white top. The fit is somewhat loose, but the crochet still gives it structure. So I get the comfort I love, and I think I could still dress this up for a more formal look.

Vigoss Colle Distressed Cropped Skinny Jean – Cost to Keep $68

(Size 6)

I LOVE a distressed jean, and I indicated that in my style profile, so I was very happy to see my stylist deliver! The fit is great too, and these jeans had the right amount of stretch. (But I just wish they were high-waisted! I’ll let my stylist know to only send high-waist styles for my next Fix.)

Urban Expressions Maison Whipstitch Trim Crossbody Bag – Cost to Keep $39

This purse features a zippered fold over section and a removable chain so you can also wear it as a clutch.

And a whipstitch finish on the edges:

In my style profile, I indicated that I wanted to try bags, but I picked the cheapest price range, and again, my stylist nailed it – I love the cross-body style. It has the hands-free convenience of the fanny pack, while still being pretty much considered fashionably acceptable by all.

Here it is on:

And I don’t have any taupe-colored accessories, so this fills in a hole in my wardrobe, too.

Papermoon Conner Lattice Top – Cost to Keep $34

(Size: Medium)

Eh, this top isn’t too exciting for me. It’s soft, but the one interesting detail is in the back:

And that means either an exposed bra, a bra challenge, or wearing a tank underneath this – none of which have the easy-to-wear tee vibe!

Papermoon Danyela Knit Maxi Dress – Cost to keep $54

(Size: Medium)

First, please excuse my paler-than-normal arms – I need to catch up on my self-tanning!

This elastic-waist dress fits well, but I wasn’t in love with it. For one thing, as I alluded to above, I’m somewhat lazy when it comes to clothes and bras, and usually, end up wearing the items I can wear with a traditional bra. That means items with necklines like these will stay in my closet with the tags on. I left a note on my account after seeing this dress that I’d like to see maxis with sleeves – hopefully, I get one next month!

Hacks for improving your first Stitch Fix:

  1. When you are filling out the style profile, be pickier than you think you should be. There’s a section with different body parts to let them know if you like to show them off, show them sometimes, keep them covered, etc. (Arms, torso, cleavage, legs, etc.) I was neutral on showing off my arms, but the reality is I don’t really like/wear sleeveless tops, so I should have just taken a firm no on that one. (You can always update your profile at any time, too.)
  2. On the final page of your style profile, you can leave detailed notes. Your stylist will read these, so make sure to get as specific as you can. If you’re going to an event and need an outfit for it, give all the details.
  3. Create a Pinterest board with outfits/styles you love. When you are filling out your style profile you can share this and it’s a great way to give your stylist a visual of what you like. This is the best way to make sure your stylist can visualize your style. If you have the time to do it, do not skip this step! (Check out my review of Stitch Fix once I gave my stylist a Pinterest board to see the difference.)
  4. Play Style Shuffle! On your account page, you can vote thumbs up or down on items. It’s fun and also helps add more data to your profile for your stylist to work with.

Lastly, one thing to keep in mind, even with these hacks, there’s still a chance that you’ll get an item or two that you don’t love. My last tip? Make sure to get very specific in your feedback about why you don’t like the item. Your stylist will read all this feedback when picking your next items, so make sure you give them as much info as possible!

      • I would love to get some nice blouses with long sleeves.

  2. I’ve liked several pants and tops. I have a great shopper!

  3. I have never tried Stitch Fix, or any clothing subscription. I think it would be fun to try outfits that i wouldn’t have thought to even look at, much less try. I love reading all the SF reviews to see how varied their options are

    • I have the exact same comments.

    • My fix is coming in a few days and I am super excited but also pretty nervous! The costs seems to be pretty steep so hopefully it is more affordable than I am expecting!! The quizzes that they give you seem really in depth so I also have high hopes!

      • Has your box arrived yet?

  4. I’ve gotten a couple of cute dresses!

  5. Haven’t tried it yet.
But maybe I should, now that I don’t have as much time to look around & do the shopping.
Also seems very convenient:, no need to spend time to pick anything & I could try it at home whenever I want to.

    • My boyfriend uses it and its awesome. He hates shopping but needs to wear nice clothes for work. They have nailed his style and body type.

  6. I’m interested in trying new styles.

  7. I’ve never tried but could use some new work clothes 😊

  8. I got a super adorable pair of plaid pants from a StitchFix. I would never have sought them out to try on if it wasn’t for Stitch Fix, and I ADORE them. I wore them constantly this winter. I appreciate being taken out of my comfort zone.

  9. I haven’t tried Stitch Fix yet but I would love some help getting I look I need for a new job! Looks promising!

  10. I need casual wear and I hate shopping!

  11. I would love to try dresses and maybe some jeans. I need some stuff for an upcoming vacay!

  12. Cute top !

  13. I’ve haven’t tried StitchFix yet but I’m very interested since I’ve had my youngest kid (3) and I don’t have any time to ship anymore!

  14. I LOVE stitch fix! It started off rocky and I only kept one or two items but my new stylist has been phenomenal!

  15. I tried stitch fix once and I really enjoyed it. My favorite item was a sheer orange blouse, perfect for summer. I would love to try stitch fix again. I recently lost 50 lbs worth of comfort eating and I seriously need to go shopping!

  16. I’ve had really good Stitch Fix experiences. Lots of great reusable pieces. A few times things didn’t work out but overall it’s been really positive.

  17. I’d love to try this as I always need new clothes but am kind of all over the place with my style and barely have time to shop for myself.

  18. I just got my first box from StitchFix and I loved all of the items that I got in it so much that I just bought all of them, took the 25% discount for getting everything in the box, and didn’t look back. Would definitely recommend it as of right now.

  19. I found my favorite maternity work dress through on of my fixes.

  20. I’ve had 3 kids in 4 years and been waiting for my body to recover before buying nice clothes. Can’t wait to try Stitch Fix to update my wardrobe!

  21. I haven’t tried stitch fix. I’d love to get more bottoms. I absolutely love those jeans on you, Liz! I also wouldn’t mind some more accessories to try.

  22. I LOVE stitch fix! Almost all of my fixes have been 5/5. I have recommended to so many people. It always brightens my day and the clothes are amazing. I still wear all of the things I’ve gotten in the past year.

  23. I’ve always wanted to try them, but never allowed myself to splurge. I love their pretty patterns and adorable details like the cream and sage tops above.

  24. I’ve never tried it! I have some tricky fit needs and it would be nice to have some help finding pieces that work.

  25. I received a jean jacket from Stitch Fix and I love it! It’s so stretchy and comforable! Also my Margaret M pants are my favorite.

  26. I’ve never tried Stitch Fix before, but I love the idea! I have so much clothes shopping anxiety that it sounds lovely to be able to sit back and let someone else do the shopping for me (with my input of course!).

  27. I really love stitch fix. I got my first box last month and loved every piece I got. Can’t wait for my next box!

  28. I got some awesome leggins, something I never thought I would like.

  29. I’ve tried them once, ended up not loving any of the clothes but did get a very pretty necklace so I wouldnt lose out on my $20 styling fee.

    • I wonder howany people end up using stitchfix regularly?

      • I actually love the fact that you can request boxes as needed and dont have to do it monthly. No way could I afford it every month, but it’s great for if I’m looking for something for a specific occation or seasonal updates.

  30. Never tried stitch fix-it’s on my to-do list

  31. I’m really interested in getting some clothes that fit my body type.

    • That would be awesome!

  32. I’ve never tried Stitch Fix because I usually find my clothes on sale, so they’re cheaper than Stitch Fix. They seem to have nice clothes for people who don’t have the time to bargain shop though.

  33. I’ve gotten many great items from Stitch Fix over the past two years. Just recently, I had issues with the quality of an item I had bought and brought it to their attention. The refunded me the full price and told me to keep the item! Great customer service.

  34. I’ve never tried this box before but I’ve always wanted to! Having 4 littles to take care of, I rarely get to go shopping for myself. It’d be nice to have someone pick out a nice outfit for me from time to time

  35. I am most interested in the stitchfix box, to find clothes that flatter my body type. As a person with added weight I find clothes are often to showy of my curves or too hiding. I’m not used to buying for my current size and would gladly invite someone else’s perspective.

  36. Do they offer gift certificates? I wanted to my sister a $100 gift certificate, she has never tried it.

    • Yes, they do.

  37. Hi! I’m so interested and wondering – can you cancel membership at any time? Do all the clothes have tags on them? Do you have to go to the post office to return the items you don’t keep?? Thanks!

    • Yes, you can choose to only receive boxes when you request them, or you can set up a recurring schedule. All the clothes have tags on them. Stitch Fix uses USPS for returns, so you can either give your return bag to your mail carrier or drop it off at your local post office. Hope that helps!

    • Yes you can cancel at anytime or even delay shipments.
All clothing and accessories have price tags.
Yes you will need to go to post office to send back anything you do not want to keep. You do not pay any shipping or handling for returns.
      I absolutely love Stitch Fix ! 😃

      • You don’t need to go to the post office to return. I leave the bag in my mailbox and the mail carrier picks it up. Easy!

      • Not everyone has a mailbox you can do this in. Our mailbox only does letters for outgoing. Even though we live in single family homes, we have community mailboxes 🙁

  38. Like I said before I jumped back into stitch fix after taking a couple of years off. OMG. Perfect. Leather olive green hobo bag too cute. The best fitting jeans ever. A plaid red white blue top a totally cute hoody and grey sweat top with a criss cross back and tunic type neck. Plus a free bra. All total keepers for $210. That’s a deal to me.

  39. I think everything looks amazing on you! I did subscribe to fabfitfun based off of your website and I love it! I just don’t see the deal in the service though. You’re paying about $200 for 2 tops, a pair of jeans, a dress and a bag. I don’t see that as a bargain. Am I missing something?

    • Thanks! And so happy to hear you love FabFitFun, too! I think Stitch Fix isn’t really about bargains – probably more for convenience. Hope that makes sense!

      • You are right. I did not even think about it like that.

  40. I really like this review so I signed up! All of those looked very nice on you. I’m hopeful to get some nice things as well.

  41. Will it matter to them if I end up not keeping items most of the time? I wanna try this but I am very cheap and only buys item that are either on sale or clearance, and I don’t really spend more than $15 on shirts/blouses unless I really love it! So if I end up just returning everything or like 4 out of 5 items monthly, are they going to ban me or anything? Sorry I’m just really curious

    • If you like bargains and can’t afford to pay for this subscription maybe you shouldn’t get it . The subscription is not about trying to save money is about getting a unique product or products right at your door steps.

    • There’s no obligation to buy, and they’ll happily keep your $20 per shipment as long as you return all the items in good shape. I haven’t tried this yet, but I doubt you’ll find anything under $25 in your selections. They don’t disclose the prices until you get the items, but the FAQ says :
“We carry a variety of prices so we can personalize items to your budget. Our Women’s and Men’s items range from $25–$500. …you tell us how much you’re comfortable paying for each item. Your Stylist will do their best to send you items within your set range.”

I’m with you–I don’t like paying a lot for my clothes, so this probably isn’t for me, but the idea is appealing–that you might find something that you “love” and will probably not find on your own. Maybe you can fish for someone you know to buy you a Stitch Fix gift card so you can try it for free :).

  42. The light green tee was my favorite item. Go figure.

  43. I’m a guy that hates shopping for clothes and was looking into stitch-fix and some reviews. I’ve never felt that I could select a great outfit. Clothes have also never been a top priority for me. The result is some shoddy, old clothes and me not looking that great. While this review is about women’s clothes, it’s nice to see you’re happy with the service. Maybe I can look decent while having someone else dress me so I don’t have to concern myself with shopping for clothes!

Also don’t worry about your white arms. I don’t think anyone would have noticed. You look pretty in the dress.

  44. I get what you’re saying about the dress/bra issue, but it looks AMAZING on you!!

    • Thank you so much! 🙂

  45. Best Stitch Fix box and review I’ve ever seen. You style is just like mine- I’d keep the jeans, white top and crossbody bag. 😉

Everything looks beautiful on you. I like the 2 pieces that are not so easy to wear as well.
I agree with you regarding the hassles of finding the strapless or low back bra for just one top or dress.

    • Thanks so much, Mandy! Glad to hear I’m not the only one who doesn’t want to deal with special bra needs!

  46. I think you could wear the maxi dress with a cute shrug.

    • Good suggestion! I’m pretty much always cold anyway, so that works! 🙂

    • I agree! I saw a solid color blush cotton/ poly blend open jacket ( similar to the palm print kimono in the spring BOS in that it’s open in the front but lighter feel material) and bought one on Jane.
There’s a small crocheted lace edging on the open front edging and the 3/4 length sleeves.
This would be another really pretty option because of all the blush pink flowers.. I don’t wear a lot of snowy white because it’s not flattering on me ( I’m so fair) but bringing out the blush or pink would be really pretty if it’s not outside your comfort zone to wear pink. ( I’m not sure). 🙂

I’d look on Amazon for any/ all kinds of shrugs, open summer weight cardis, anything. Jane’s deals are so limited timewise, and Amazon’s aren’t.

  47. What a great white top. I think if I saw it on the hanger I would never look twice at it, but it really looks great on you.

    • Thanks so much, Jordan! 🙂

  48. Thank you so much for doing this review. I’ve been contemplating subbing but I honestly didn’t know what to expect, especially in my first couple shipments so now I have no excuses!!

    • I say go for it! I was pleasantly surprised by how good my first box was, and I’d say if you go into it thinking the first box is a test box and give them lots of feedback, you’ll be happy. Let me know what you get! 🙂

  49. Liz, you are GORGEOUS. Also, I love the maxi on you, but if you won’t wear it then that makes sense. However I really really love the white top on you! <3

    • Thanks, Haley! 🙂

  50. Liz everything looks amazing as usual.

    • Thank you! 🙂
