clean.fit box July 2018 Review

This box is new for me so I didn’t know what to expect. But I just want to say right now, I went into it with a positive attitude. I have wanted, like since I first learned about subscription boxes, a box with snacks for vegetarians that was not vegan (I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 25 years come August and sometimes I just want honey or dairy or something, you know?) and this is the first one I have ever come across:

There was an information booklet with more information on the brands and products in the box, including a few coupon codes.

There were also various bits of product literature, ads, and a sticker.

Velocity Lacrosse Ball –

Velocity Lacrosse Ball – Buy 6 for $15.99

This was the only non-consumable product in the box and it came with a set of suggested uses. I have a terrible plantar fasciitis flare-up in my right foot right now so this is on the shelf in the living room next to where I sit after dinner and I am using it to massage my heel and it is definitely helping.

MRM Digest All (2 capsules x 2 packages)

MRM Digest-All (2 capsules x 2 packages) – Buy 100 Capsules for $24.95 (found here for $14.97)

This strikes me as a vegetarian alternative to Beano although that might be oversimplifying things. It has quite a lot of enzymes for various polymers and compounds that might be found in food (proteins, sugars, lipids, starches, etc.). It also has some stomach-soothing compounds like peppermint and ginger. I received this box on a Sunday so I am saving these until Friday night when I will go out to eat and test these out by ordering the fattiest meal that will fit within my calorie goal for the day. (I seem to have more trouble with stomach upset from fats than anything else lately.)

Tessera Pitted Green Olives with Chili Flakes (3.5 oz) – Buy 10 Bags for $29.30

I love olives and these are pretty good. They do have a bit of brine/liquid in the bag (would’ve made a mess of my photo surface…). But they are large and plump and of excellent quality. I am keeping the package shut in the refrigerator and eat three a day (about 20 calories). I actually might buy these from Amazon.

Oh My Spice Garlic Lovers Seasoning (5 oz)

Oh My Spice Garlic Lovers Seasoning (5 oz) – Retail Value $7.99

This is considered fit/healthy because it is a seasoning mix that is low in sodium. (It does have a small amount.) The ingredients are garlic, onion, turmeric, sea salt, black pepper, annatto, basil, oregano, coriander leaf (aka cilantro), and a natural anti-caking agent. I didn’t taste the cilantro strongly (which is good because I don’t like cilantro) but I know different people pick out flavors from blends differently. At any rate, I take blood pressure medicine and know I am supposed to limit my salt intake and I will probably mostly use this to liven up food from recipes that turn out to be bland (this is often the case for a particular cookbook we use; my husband douses everything from that book in hot sauce but that is not really my style).

Oh My Spice Flavor Topper in Apple Pie Seasoning (4.25 oz)

Oh My Spice Flavor Topper in Apple Pie Seasoning (4.25 oz) – Retail Value $7.99

This has cinnamon and some other natural flavors but the first ingredient is whey protein. I put this in a smoothie this morning with some unflavored protein powder that really needed some help and, while it was a little different from my usual chocolate, it worked. I won’t be eating oatmeal again until the weekend but I will definitely try this out then, too.

Me Moringa for Life Moringa Leaf Powder (50g) – Retail Value $11.90

Based on the amount of moringa I’m getting in fitness boxes, it is a trendy ingredient right now. This is a superfood that is high in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids (it comes from a tree so it is vegan). I don’t really like the taste of moringa on its own, but a little bit added into a smoothie with other ingredients is a great way to get the benefits of this product, so that’s what I’ve been doing.

Ona Apple Peanut Bar (1.9 oz)

Ona Apple Peanut Bar (1.9 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $28

I had an Ona Bar once before, back when The Hive Box was still around. This is just as good as I remembered. There are a lot of peanut/tree nut type ingredients here (but I don’t have any food allergies). The first ingredient is honey and these are definitely sweet, but not cloyingly so. This is grain free but has a somewhat different texture than your usual fruit/nut bars. I’m a fan.

Ona Cookies in Maple Pecan (2 oz) – Buy 12 Packs for $28

These are grain free cookies and actually free of eggs and dairy as well (though they have honey so they’re not vegan). The base is almond flour and they have a really nice texture that is much better than I usually associate with almond flour products (crumbly like a flour-based cookie should be, but not so crumbly it falls apart – these hold their shape well). Each one is 140 calories so I split these with my husband.

Atlas Bar in Chocolate Cacao (2.01 oz) – Buy a 12-Bar Variety Pack for $36

This and the next item are from the same company. The first ingredient is a blend of grass-fed whey protein, milk protein isolate, and whey protein isolate and this definitely has a texture reflective of that. It sticks in your teeth a little so I’d suggest having a drink handy. This has a good blend of protein (16g), fat (12g), and fiber (11g), and is relatively low in sugar (3g, though it does have some natural sugar alcohols). The chocolate flavor is not too sweet, but it is sweet enough to be enjoyable (for me, anyway). I split these with my husband and he was also generally a fan.

Atlas Bar in Peanut Butter Chip (2.01 oz)

Atlas Bar in Peanut Butter Chip (2.01 oz) – Buy a 12-Bar Variety Pack for $36

This has a slightly lower level of fat than the other bar, but is otherwise pretty similar. I am tasting a lot more “peanut butter” than “chip” here but that is fine by me.

Verdict: The July clean.fit box had 10 items, which makes the average cost per item about $3.50 (figuring a $34.95 cost for the box, including free shipping). You will notice from the list of prices above that quite a few of the items had values higher than that, so I feel like it averages out and you are generally getting a good deal. I really liked the composition of the box overall, mostly being snacks but with one small (and useful for me) fitness item and a supplement in packets that are convenient for throwing into a purse or pocket if you know you are going to overindulge at a meal. Most of the items were new to me, which is hard to accomplish after receiving so many food and fitness subscription boxes over the years. Also, I am just really happy that there is a box specifically for lacto-ovo vegetarians.

(FYI, I was accidentally sent the original box earlier in the week. Instead of the garlic lovers’ seasoning, there were a couple of beef sticks and some collagen protein, but the rest of the items were the same, just in case you were wondering what other types of items you might get if you sign up for the regular box instead.)

Wow nice box. I think I will cancel one of my beauty subscriptions and get this!

Ragan

It was a good box. I wish I had more of those cookies. I am just happy to finally have a box with snacks that are vegetarian (instead of only vegan).
