MAC Mystery Haul June 2018 Review

MAC Matte Lipstick in Kinda Sexy,

MAC Matte Lipstick in Kinda Sexy, Full-Size! Retail Value $18.50

This lipstick is a knockout. It is the perfect pink-tinged nude, and it is so creamy and smooth to apply. Once on, it felt just like I was wearing lip balm rather than a matte lipstick. More importantly, it actually has impressive staying power for being a regular lipstick! It lasted through my morning pancakes and some chips and salsa, and I didn’t feel like I needed to reapply until 2 pm. For a lipstick as comfortable as this one, the staying power blew me away. If you’re in the market for a nude lipstick I highly recommend checking this out—it is worth the full-price purchase.

MAC Matte Lipstick in Lust Extract, Full-Size! Retail Value $18.50

When I saw this in the tube I thought it was black and I was scared. When I swatched it, however, I saw that it was actually a purple based indigo, which is definitely a color you don’t see every day. While this shade is personally a miss for me I have already had two friends compliment the shade, so I know it will find a loving home soon. Formula-wise, this has the creamy application that I consider to be standard of the MAC lipsticks, and it should last for more than a couple of hours assuming you don’t eat a cheeseburger while wearing it.

MAC Liptensity Lipstick in Dionysus,

MAC Liptensity Lipstick in Dionysus, Full-Size! Retail Value $21

This is another lipstick that scared me in the tube—the packaging is a dark oxblood that I definitely can’t pull off, and I was thinking "why would this color be named after the God of wine?" I had my answer as soon as I swatched it—this is a gorgeous plum-berry shade that the God of wine would be proud of. Since this is from the Liptensity line, that means the pigment is a lot stronger than your regular lipstick. When applying it directly from the tube to my lip it went on very heavy and darker than I expected. I think the next time I reach for this shade I will apply it with a lip brush so it's not as thick.

MAC Retro Matte Metallic Liquid Lipcolor in Metrochrome,

MAC Retro Matte Metallic Liquid Lipcolor in Metrochrome, Full-Size! Retail Value $21

I loveee metallic lip colors like these because I think they are perfect for adding a color contrast to your regular lip color. I paired this with Dionysus by patting it onto the center of my lip with my finger, and I love the gentle ombre it provides. On its own, it has good staying power as well thanks to the liquid lipstick formulation.

Here I am wearing Dionysus with Metrochrome blended into the center of my lips by gently patting the color on with my finger. I think this will look even more epic when I apply Dionysus with a lip brush.

MAC Matte Eyeshadow in Espresso,

MAC Matte Eyeshadow in Espresso, Full-Size! Retail Value $17

I was really excited to see this eyeshadow single in the box, as I have always viewed the MAC eyeshadows as being on a cult-status level, even though their price is comparable to other high-end brands. I think it is because MAC was the hot brand when I was in high school, where I was just starting to really get into makeup but MAC's price range was out of my reach. Anyways, not only am I happy to have gotten an eyeshadow single but I am especially happy to have gotten such a classic shade. Espresso is the perfect matte coffee shade that can be used as a transition shade in a smoky eye or on its own for a simple but sultry look.

Here are the swatches! From top to bottom you have Espresso, Dionysus, Metrochrome, Kinda Sexy, and Lust Extract.

Little MAC Prep + Prime Fix + in Lavender, 1 oz – Estimated Value $12

I was really hoping to get a fix+ in my mystery haul so I could try this cult favorite for myself. I got the lavender version of this little MAC, but online only the original formula is available in this size (I image the value is the same, however). I really like the light lavender scent (it is more like a hint of lavender than a lavender-forward spray), and this is a refreshing spritz. I have used this to moisten brushes before doing my eye makeup, and I much prefer this to my former ways of running the brush under the sink. I haven’t done a full-face of makeup since I received this to try it out as a setting spray, but so far I have been really pleased with the results.

MAC #234 Split Fibre Eye Blending Brush, discontinued - Estimated Value $20?

I know MAC brushes are some of the best in the game, but this is the first MAC brush I have had the chance to call my own! I can see why these brushes have cult status—these bristles are incredibly soft, and pigment can be picked up with ease. This brush is unique in that half of the bristles are natural hair and half are synthetic, which I don’t fully understand, but this blends shadow into my crease beautifully. This brush will last me years as long as I take proper care of it, and I am excited to start making makeup memories with this brush.

The Verdict: MAC promised 7 full-piece items with a minimum value of $98.50, and I got seven great items with an estimated total value of $128 (give or take a few dollars on the brush). I am not bothered by receiving the little MAC fix+ spray, as it was written in the fine print as a potential possibility. I loved that I got such a great mix of wearable colors and useful items, with only Lust Extract being a miss for me and Kinda Sexy being a home run. Now, what I want to know is when will MAC release another one? To be honest, I regret not getting two!

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, this was a one-day-only sale.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $49 with free shipping, and I got 7 items with a value of $128. That works out to paying $7 per item—what a steal! Alternatively, here is what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Kinda Sexy: $7.08
  • Lust Extract: $7.08
  • Dionysus: $8.04
  • Metrochrome: $8.04
  • Espresso: $6.50
  • Fix+: $4.59
  • #234: $7.66

Ok I ordered a box based on the review and used the coupons, but boy my box was terrible. I did not get a brush, I got an extra lipstick and mostly unwearable. One color is “Dreampot” which is a baby blue – not a tint, but a straight up baby blue that maybe I would wear to an EDM event (I don’t go to them), “Lightly Charred” is a lavender purple color and its not as bright as Dreampot so maybe I might be able to pull it off, then I got the same “Kinda Sexy” which is ok for a neutral (I am not a big fan of neutral colors), then a brown lipstick called “A Girl’s Got Needs” (not a big fan), and a retro matte lipcolor called “Pearl Pink” which I think is ok. So none of these lipsticks I love – not like Jessica’s and I am sad I did not get a brush. I also got the the same Little Mac Prep and Prime Fix in Lavender.

Oh and I got an eye shadow single called “Brown Script Matte”. Its pretty and I like it. Its a warm brown matte and I don’t really have a color like this, plus its a good pigment.

So this was a terrible haul and it looks like they are trying to dump their unsold lipsticks. I can see why. I love off beat colors, but that blue is just too obviously blue for my taste. Hopefully, I can find someone who will want that one at least.

Not sure if its still available, but unless you want a ton of potentially unwearable lip colors for most women, I wouldn’t get one.

They just restocked the mystery haul as a heads up. TXT coupon code gets you free shipping and there is a $25 off 75 on Gilt City right now. If you spend $75 after all the deductions you get a free full size liptensity and a makeup bag as a free gift, while supplies last

Excellent review. I picked up the box too and was very happy with everything I received. A lot of people seem to forget that MAC was like the only makeup brand that was worth wearing a few short years ago. Their brushes and lipstick formulas (with the trademark vanilla scent) are what all brands have aspired to be/surpass.
P.S The metronome shade REALLY works for you!

Yeah, I’m super thrilled w mine (3 wearable lipsticks, a dark gothy one that I’ll wear sometimes, a lip glass, a dazzeglass and the lavender spray). I’ll probably do this every time it’s an option. 😀

I’m loving my box too. With the GiltCity coupon, the price of the mystery haul came to roughly $30 and I got:

*BB cream
*eyeshadow brush (same as shown)
*Lipglass
*4 lipsticks – 3 which are very wearable for me, 1 which I’ll swap

Lip heavy, but it’s the nicest lipstick I’ve ever owned! The scent, the texture, the packaging!
