Koala Crate "Reptiles" May 2018 Review

This month’s theme is REPTILES!

Koala Crate sends a magazine every month called “imagine!” It’s full of activities and stories for little ones. It is colorful and nicely illustrated. The magazine includes little stories and ideas for the theme.

There is also an instruction booklet included. This is something that makes this box incredible to me.  The directions are step-by-step with illustrations. It is very easy to follow. There are three projects this month: Stuffed Snake Friend, Color-Changing Chameleon, and Turtle Box.

Another thing I like about this booklet is that on the back of the instructions there is a guide that shows a messiness scale and the level of grown-up involvement.  It also shows the skills the project works on, such as fine motor skills, exploring, or creating. I appreciate how the company is thinking about the educational aspects of these projects and what skills they can work on through these activities.

Project 1: Stuffed Snake Friend

This project required stuffing the pink snake body with the stuffing, then sticking these felt stickers to make a special design. Finally, you put the snake eyes on and put the party horn through the small cutouts to look like a snake tongue. Stuffing the snake was time-consuming and a pain. That part wasn’t fun and I ended up doing it since it took lots of dexterity. Putting the stickers on and putting the eyes on, was easy and I was able to do with my son. Overall, it turned out cute.

Project 2: Color changing Chameleon

This project was the easiest. All that was required was to punch out the bug stands and stick the bases on. The last step was to put the eyes on the chameleon. This one was ok. My chameleon didn’t change color as well as I hoped but it was still cute.

Project 3: Turtle Box

This was my favorite project. My son loves turtles so he liked it too. After taking the sticky side off the turtle you put it on the box (I did this part with my son’s “guidance”. Next, you put the stickers on to design it and put the eyes on the turtle. It turned out adorable and what kid doesn’t love a spot to hold special things?!

Verdict: I enjoy Koala Crate by KiwiCo because it allows my son and I do a few projects I otherwise wouldn’t come up with. I like the theme of reptiles as it works for my son who loves all animals! Like KiwiCo’s other offerings, Koala Crate does require adult involvement and supervision. It varies from month to month, but some supervision is always needed.

This is not an independent activity for your child, this is much more about bonding and spending time doing a project together. The crate always matches the theme and it’s very well put together. I think it’s a great value for the $20 a month, as thinking of these projects, getting all the supplies, and prepping them would take a VERY LONG time.
