Degustabox June 2018 Review
Degustabox always has a really nice info sheet that goes over each item included in the box with their retail values.
The content on the back changes from month to month, and this time there's a recipe to use True Lemon in a smoothie, plus a contest using the Mutti Peeled Tomatoes!
Zolli Pops x 4 + Coupon - Buy a 1 oz bag (5 lollipops) for $1.89 (found here for $1.70)
Last month I received a coupon and samples for Zaffi Taffy and this month offers Zolli Pops which are the same company. These fruit lollipops are sugar-free and made with natural ingredients so that they're a lot better for your teeth than the average sweets. However, these use Stevia which I personally don't like the taste of, so this wasn't a tasty treat for me. In addition to the 4 lollipops, they've included a coupon for a free 3 oz.-5.2 oz. bag (which has a potential value of up to $5.99).
Mutti Peeled Tomatoes, 28 oz. - Retail Value $3.95
I've received similar products in Degustabox before but since these are a great staple to have in the pantry I don't mind at all. These are perfect to use when making your own pasta sauce. Just add seasoning and you're good to go. This can is enormous so it'll make a lot!
Goya Sazonador Total Seasoning, 11 oz. - Retail Value $2.79
Yummm! I love getting full-size seasonings in food subscriptions and this one is super delicious! My roommate has been using this a lot on the chicken he's been cooking on his Keto Diet but it can be used on a ton of other things like fish or veggies too. It contains all sorts of herbs and spices like onion, parsley, garlic, among others along with salt to make otherwise mediocre meals a bit more delicious. This might be great to add to the tomatoes above.. I must try!
That's It Fruit Bar in Apple Mango and Chili - Listed Retail Price $1.69 (Buy 12 bars for $18.99)
As you can tell by the name of this company- they keep their ingredients simple. This bar is of the "zesty" variety and is made with nothing other than 1 apple, 1 mango, and some chili (powder?) to spice things up a bit. My roomie gobbled this up and said that it was "nice n fruity, not too dark, “thick”, or dense".
Goya White Corn Tortillas, 30 ct - Retail Value $1.98
I may be in the minority here but I will receive tortillas every month with open arms with no complaints. They are another staple of my house so that I can make tacos at any time, huevos rancheros for breakfast, or even a quick quesadilla when I'm not feeling like getting too involved in a recipe. The package they sent includes 30 tortillas which as you can see is a wonderfully large amount! These are shelf stable but I put them in the fridge since it will take me a while to get through them.
Goya Black Beans Low Sodium, 15.5 oz. - Retail Value $1.48
Since I have 30 tortillas to use up, these black beans will do rather nicely. They're another item that makes many appearances in Degustabox but since I am a Goya superfan, I'm totally on board. If there was a Goya sub box, I would probably subscribe, just saying. Black bean and corn quesadillas are a favorite quick snack of mine, but these could be used in a myriad of other things like chili (though that's not a big summer meal). What's even better is that these are the low sodium variety.
Tickle Water in Watermelon, 8 0z. - Listed Retail Value $1.29 (Buy a case of 12 for $13.00)
I was preparing myself for this to be super sweet since my mom told me hers tasted like a Jolly Rancher, but I was pleasantly surprised that this tasted really clean and mellow. The watermelon flavor was evident but not too sweet or sugary. Compared to a similarly naturally flavored and no sugar added carbonated waters like La Croix or (my favorite) Spindrift, these are little pricey but have a cool clear bottle with the same classic pop tab opening.
True Lemon, 32 ct. - Retail Value $3.50 (found here for $2.86)
Every time I see a packet of powdered something or other that is added to water I become suspect on how healthy or better it really is than actual fruit. I assumed this would have some sort of sugar substitute in it, but literally, all it is crystallized lemon. The ingredients are citric acid, lemon oil, and lemon juice so it seems like the best way to add lemon to your water without having a living breathing lemon on hand. They say one packet is equal to a wedge of lemon and I agree that it delivers a great amount of lemon to a full 16 oz glass of water. I love lemon but darned if I don't end up wasting a bunch whenever a buy a whole bag that I don't use in time before they go bad. This is the answer for people like me.
Walkers Pure Butter Vanilla Shortbread, 5.3 oz. - Retail Value $4.49
Are there people out there that don't like shortbread? It's so simple just so darned good that I could probably crush this box by self in one sitting. These cookies are a classic and so insanely buttery and delicious! They come neatly tucked in a plastic tray to cut down on getting damaged and you'll get 12 cookies in each box. You can share yours but I don't think I'll be doing so with mine.
Lundberg Family Farms Grounded Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips, 5.5 oz. - Listed Retail Value $3.49 (Buy a case of 12 for $37.07)
I'm afraid. To me, tortilla chips are meant to be snacked upon with savory dips like salsa or guacamole, so to see these have cinnamon and sugar on them I am immediately turned off. I'm weird like that. If I tell myself that these are not made of rice and quinoa and pretend they are a sweet snack as opposed to a savory one, they are good. They are REALLY good. But what do I dip these in?
Verdict: Degustabox still reigns supreme for me. There may be people who say "black beans again?", "tortillas again?", or "canned tomatoes again?", but that ain't me. The selection did seem pretty random this month but it delivered a lot of staples I love to my door, along with some new products and flavors, almost all of them being full size. Although the estimated total value of at least $24.66 I calculated (minus the Zollipop which is a variable) isn't the biggest payoff I've seen, it's still decent for the $19.99 cost. Plus, I didn't have to go to the grocery store and tried some new things.
