Degustabox May 2018 Review
Degustabox always has a really nice info sheet that goes over each item included in the box with their retail values.
The content on the back changes from month to month, and this time there's a word search that uses words pertaining to the items!
ZaffiTaffy Samples + Coupons
Degustabox has thrown in some ZaffyTaffy samples with coupons to get a free 5.2 oz bag where they're sold. I ate one that tasted like grape or berry and it was really soft and sweet without being overly sugary. Not sure I'll redeem this coupon or not, but I suppose I'll keep it around in case I get the hankering and remember to cash it in.
Karma Wellness Water in Blueberry Lemonade - Listed Retail Value $2.29 (Buy a 12 pack for $24.99)
I don't know how I retain these things, but I recall getting this once before in Degustabox back in July of last year. That was a different flavor, but the product is the same in that there is a powder stored in the cap that you push down into the water before drinking. Once you shake it up to mix, you'll receive 100% of fresh A, E and essential B vitamins plus BC30 Probiotic. It kind of reminds me of the glass bottles of Japanese soda I used to buy when I was younger that had a marble sealing it. You'd push the marble into a little vestibule to open it. Makes for a fun way to start a drink. Like the Acai flavor I received before, this one isn't bad and does resemble lemonade, but it has a weird aftertaste that I don't love which I'll blame on the Stevia.
Goya Medium Salsa Verde, 17.6 oz. - Retail Value $2.68
Another variation of a past item is this full-size jar of Salsa Verde from Goya. Salsa Verde is my number one favorite salsa, so I did a little happy dance when I opened this one up. Of course, I wish that tortilla chips came with this, but wouldn't you know I still have the barbacoa slow cooker sauce to make from last month and I think this salsa would go well with it. Plus, I usually do have some chippies on hand. This salsa is just a little spicy without going overboard.
Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce, 16 oz. - Retail Value $6.95
It's so rare that I use BBQ sauce, but this jar intrigues me since it looks like a flask of whiskey. Haha. My Mom loves food more than I do and was really jealous of this box in particular, so this month I finally got her a gift subscription since she's over in Ohio and I can't just share mine with her easily. She excitedly told me about everything she got in her first box over the phone a couple days ago and said she received the Smoky Apple version of this sauce. Upon opening, it smells really delicious with a touch of sweetness. It has a little zip to it and you can taste the honey. Looks like I'm going to have to find a reason to slather thing all over something soon.
Post Grape Nuts Trail Mix Crunch - Retail Value $3.98
For some reason, I love receiving cereal in this box. I think I secretly love cereal but never buy it, so when it arrives unannounced, I welcome it with open arms. I grew up only eating Cheerios, Corn Flakes, and Raisin Bran so I prefer the healthier side of things compared to sugary colorful cereal a lot of kids were allowed to eat when I was a kid. I was jealous back then of those kids but glad now that I'm not particularly fond of it. That's my longwinded way of saying that this Cranberry Vanilla Trail Mix Crunch is right up my alley. If I'm out of milk (which is all the time), I can also just snack on it without and it's just as satisfying. The dried cranberry gives a nice sour sweetness to the otherwise dry ingredients.
Explore Cuisine Organic Chickpea Fusilli - Listed Retail Value $5.69 (found here for $4.71)
Another thing I enjoy getting in sub boxes is pasta! This is an organic chickpea variety so it will be a new adventure for me as well. Pantry items are always essential for me since I'm really lazy and don't live suuuuper close to a grocery store. I can put this in my cupboard and use it when I'm hungry but don't want to leave my house. I don't eat gluten-free, but it seems like those items are usually on the healthier side of things, so I'm down to check it out.
Cello Whisps Cheddar Cheese Crisps - Listed Retail Value $3.99 (Buy a 3 pack for $10.96)
These Whisps are marked as "Back by popular demand" on the info sheet which means I've had them before and remember thinking they were slightly addictive. The sharpness of the cheddar is really surprising and although they're a bit on the greasy side, I keep going back for more. I described them before as "when you make something with cheese on top, then there are those crispy, almost burnt parts where the cheese slides off onto the pan or baking sheet you’re using" and I stand by it. These crunchy little devils are so tasty.
Goya Maria Cookies, 6.7 oz. - Retail Value $0.92
There's nothing quite like a simple cookie. No frills, just perfectly crispy sugar cookies that taste like Vienne Fingers without the cream center. I could eat this whole pack in one sitting and not bat an eyelash. I find them rather nice to look at as well!
Deep River Sweet Maui Onion Kettle Cooked Potato Chips, 1.375 oz. - Buy a 24 pack of 2 oz bags for $28.99
I am obsessed with potato chips but this Sweet Maui Onion flavor gives me pause. I will deal with onion flavoring, but these are also sweet, so I'm not having it. The chips are nice and crunchy because of that nice kettle cooked style, but I can't support this flavor.
Popcorn, Indiana Kettle Corn, 1 oz. x2 - Buy an 8 oz. bag for $3.29
If you read my latest Oreo Cookie Club review, you know that I am not a fan of Kettle Corn in general. It's a savory/sweet thing that I can't get into (even though there are loads of exceptions). Lucky for me (jk) they've sent two bags of it, so I have two bags to give to someone else who will enjoy it. In the grand scheme of things, its fine, I just don't want my popcorn to be sweet is all!
Verdict: Degustabox had a mix of small-sized snacks and full-size heavy hitting condiments with some pantry items, cheese snacks, and cookies peppered in. The clear winners for me this month are the salsa, BBQ sauce, whisps, and cookies. The bummers are the drink, and the popcorn and potatp chips that just weren't the right flavor for me.
