I'm reviewing The Kiss Quotient.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang - Retail Value $15

(FYI - the hardcover version of this book appears to only be available through Book of the Month)

Book Summary from Amazon:

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases--a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice--with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan--from foreplay to more-than-missionary position...

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...

Book of the Month doesn't typically feature romance novels, so when I saw this was an option for June, it was a no-brainer! I should mention though, that while I love a good romance, I'm super picky and most books don't live up to my expectations. Sadly, this one missed the mark for me as well. Looking at reviews online, it seems I'm pretty much the only person who didn't love this book. It is getting rave reviews everywhere.

I'm having a difficult time pinpointing exactly why this didn't work for me, but one of my issues was that there seemed to be some immediate Insta-Love, (or at least Insta-Lust), which is a pet-peeve of mine. (For reference, my favorite book in this category is The Hating Game by Sally Thorne.)

If you picked this book this month, please let me know what you think of it!

Verdict:  The value of the Book of the Month subscription is great. The variety of new books offered is awesome and the prices are still better than Amazon for new hardcover releases. (UPDATE: this book isn't available on Amazon as a hardcover, so that comparison isn't applicable here, but it is for the other book selections this month.) If one book a month won't cut it, you can also add-ons books from previous months for $9.99. I like that you also have the option to skip a month.

I skipped this month. Nothing was calling out to me. I keep thinking I am going to drop this sub as I can go to book outlet and buy 5 books for this price.

I’m I missing something? How is this a great deal? You pay $14.99 for the subscription for a book that’s value is $15, so you save a penny?

I pay for a year at a time, and it comes out to $10 a month. So definitely a good deal.

Each book is priced differently when it comes to retail. Not all of them are $15. A lot of books are $18-25 for hardcover edition. This book only comes in paperback. The hardcover version is for BOTM hence the $15 value…for a $15 sub.

I personally love how BOTM presents and packages books. To me, paying $35 for 3 books is a good deal. I support a great company, awesome customer service, and authors I would have not known about otherwise.

Oh, so sorry! You are right. Normally, when I’m comparing these books to the Amazon prices, Amazon offers the hardcover, and BOTM is usually cheaper. (For example one of the other BOTM selections this month, When Katie Met Cassidy, is $20 on Amazon.)

In this case, from what I can tell, there is no way to buy the Hardcover edition besides getting it through BOTM, so I meant to mention that and totally forgot. I’ll update the review now to reflect that.

Thanks and sorry again!

If you follow the link to amazon and switch from the pre-linked kindle to paperback, the paperback is $9.15. So this book was a loss of almost $6.

For me there is value in the curation. But, calling this a ‘great value’ and not providing the true comparison seems less forthcoming than MSA is normally.

I skipped last month. None of the books appealed to me. I also stopped going off of reviews because most raved-about books don’t live up to expectations. I did get 3 books this month though. Can’t wait to read them.

I also got three! Two of this month’s AND one from god knows when. It’s so hard for me to not add at least one extra (and I love that we can choose from previous months and special bonus printings etc)…

Hey Liz!

You might like a past BOTM called A Million Junes…

I don’t know why or how I picked it as an extra book (I’m inclined to believe the spiked seltzers I was imbibing might be the culprit) when my book came that month I was so confused, it’s YA, with a sweeping love story AND some paranormal twists, but I thought I’d added an entirely different book. Anyway, it was amazing! Check it out sometime.

I actually more recently chose How to Walk Away, and for some reason all but the ending dragged on for me. It was one of the few times I wasn’t thrilled by my selection(s). That’s also a romance themed book, but I can’t say I recommend it. It might make a good fill if they cast it right and cut out some of the fluff/filler.
