Ricky's NYC Cult Crushes May 2018 Review

There's been a lot of drama this month in the Cult Crushes world due to them shipping a ton of orders really late (and long after everyone was charged). This stung particularly bad because it came soon after they announced the subscription would be increasing from $11.00 to $14.00 starting in June. I happened to be in the "super late shipping" chunk of subscribers, so I just received my box a couple days ago when it normally comes mid-month. Apparently, they were waiting for a shipment of the Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water that still hasn't come and they decided to finally ship it without and subbed in something else to tide us over. Once the Bioderma comes in, they will be sending it out in a separate shipment.

We just got word our Bioderma shipment is officially arriving next week. We’ve heard you loud and clear and we don’t want to keep you waiting, so we’re working overtime this weekend to ship out your May boxes minus the Bioderma.
In its place we’ll provide an extra little goody, and as soon as we get the Bioderma next week we will send it to you as a separate shipment.

As frustrating as I'm sure it is to a lot of subscribers who waited extra long, I have to say that Cult Crushes was really forthcoming the entire time about what was going on via email and social media and seemed genuinely panicked and sorry for the whole situation.

Now let's check out what came!

Cult Crushes info card Cult Crushes list of items

First, you'll see an info card that lists all of this month's Cult Crushes. This month is all about "Clean and Gleam" and will get squeaky clean before getting you gleaming.

Comodynes Micellar Solution Makeup Remover Towelettes for Normal Skin open package of Comodynes Micellar Solution Makeup Remover Towelettes for Normal Skin

Comodynes Micellar Solution Makeup Remover Towelettes for Normal Skin, Pack of 20 – Retail Value $6.99

So this is what they included in my box to replace the missing Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water. Makes sense! I actually received a pack of this makeup remover wipes in my very first Cult Crushes box back in October of last year. I recently learned that an ideal evening routine should include two types of facial cleansing. I was pleased as pie to learn this since I normally use a wipe like this first to remove my makeup, and then use a cleanser to really get my face clean before retiring to bed.

Laundress Wash & Stain Bar description for Laundress Wash & Stain Bar directions for Laundress Wash & Stain Bar ingredients for Laundress Wash & Stain Bar unwrapped Laundress Wash & Stain Bar

The Laundress Wash & Stain Bar - Retail Value $6.00

There seemed to be a lot of shade being thrown at this item from the Cult Crushes community and although I get that this is certainly not an item to be expected in a beauty box, I kinda don't mind it. I haven't gotten a chance to test it out on real life stains in the wild, but the bar smells super clean and fresh and it's small enough to tuck away in a tight spot in the laundry room so you can grab it when you need it. It also travels well since it's solid. Beware though, Cult Crushes sent an email warning subscribers to refrain from use as a brush cleaner (as some had mentioned doing) or to rinse thoroughly since it contains borax which could cause eye irritation.

Pure Paw Paw Grape back of Pure Paw Paw Grape

Pure Paw Paw Ointment in Grape - Retail Value $4.95

We first reported in our spoilers that the paw paw ointment came in strawberry, but it actually has several scent variations. I happened to get grape which I'm not totally over the moon about, but I do love grape candy and this smells really similar. Aside from having the most adorable packaging of any like-product, this ointment helps repair severely dry or chapped skin. I will personally get way more use out of this come Winter, but I tried a bit on my chronically dry elbows and it seemed to soften them up without being greasy. The info card mentions using this as a lip ointment as well so I'll probably do that!

JCat Aura Glow Liquid Highlighter in Twilight - Retail Value $8.99

This was probably the item I was most excited about because of my growing obsession with highlighter. I've been using a stick highlighter recently and have been craving a liquid one like this. Subscribers received a random color, and I was bummed to receive one that is extremely dark for my pale skin. Drat! As someone who has a skin tone that most beauty products are catered to, I'm not going to be too cranky about it, I just happened to lose on this one. Even as a bronzer, this doesn't really suit me, but hopefully I can pass it to a friend it'd work on!

BH Cosmetics, Sculpt + Blend Mini Brush Set

Even though I am up to my ears in makeup brushes, this set of 3 mini brushes got me a little excited. I keep all of my daily makeup in a pouch so that I can toss it in my bag if I don't have time to put it on before work as well as it makes it easy to pack for trips. Having three small brushes that easily fit is kinda nice. I used the pointed round brush to apply eyeshadow and it worked rather well. I'm eager to try the other two to see how they can help me perfect my eye game.

*UPDATE: 6/14/18

Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water with lid open

Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water, 100 ml - Retail Value $6.90

Cult Crushes said they'd send this separately and they did indeed deliver. I got mine on 6/11 and was able to try it out yesterday. I used it in the evening and boy did it really clean off a lot of grossness from my face. I hadn't even worn makeup that day but the cotton ball I used was pretty dingy so I feel pretty satisfied that I can use this instead of my usual makeup remover sheets once I run out of those or if I'm looking to control the amount of cleansing I need. It didn't seem to irritate my skin either. Yay!

Verdict: I was really excited about this month's Cult Crushes when I saw the spoilers, but ultimately this one did fall a little flat for me because of misses with the variations. The $33.83 ($26.93 + the additional item sent later) retail value is still a good one for this $11.00 box, even without the brushes that I wasn't able to find a definitive price for. It's certainly not the highest value they've had but I still have the Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water coming to me and I'd estimate that the brush set is at least worth $5.00. I'm excited to see what happens next month because I think they want to make good on their shipping mishap this month and be sure to keep subscribers with the cost increase.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No- May sold out but you can sign up for their mailing list to be notified when June opens up.

Value Breakdown: At $11.00 for this box, you're paying roughly $1.83 per item.

It was my first month, and I really enjoyed this box 🙂

I like the soap. I’m going to use it on my hand was bras, the straps and underwire parts can sometimes in the summer get kinda gross if I’m outside a lot and used lotion and my skin is sweaty and gross. So I’m going to try to on straps and underwire.

The paw paw was a pleasant discovery. I use it on elbows and feet at night and it’s worked great.

I gave the highliter away.

The brushes are nice and washed up well. My first time using bh and I’m interested in checking out more from them.

The bioderma was the first time I’ve tried it, even though I get many sample boxes, never tried it, and its a good size sample. I will buy this when its gone.

All in all this is exactly what I love about beauty subs. Introduced me to products that were revelant to me, and some (saop) I didn’t know was!!! I will be investing in bh brushes, and the microderma, and depending on how well the soap works on my bras, I might be buying full sized of this.

Great first box and hope they keep it up!!!

I got the grape PawPaw and was able to immediately swap it so all is well! I can’t stand fake grape scents.

I used the Laundress bar at work a couple days ago (costume designer, working through the backlog of laundry after the last show!) and it does a fair job. I’d say it’s great to have on hand for immediate stains, which can be treated and rinsed out pretty much as they happen. For older stains I’ll stick with Grandma’s Stain Remover or good old oxyclean!

I’ll definitely be adding this little bar to the stash of supplies over at the theater though, I suspect it will even be helpful with stray theatrical makeup which is quite hard to get out. It’s also pretty and sort of fun to use! You can pretend to be all olde tyme which is way more fun than a shout wipe or whatever else you have on hand.

Anyone else have an email sent to them today from Ricky’s saying they are unable to process their re-occurring payment for June? They didn’t seem to have trouble billing my valid credit card that is on file last month, but this month, I get an email saying my payment failed. When I contacted my credit card company to find why, they tell me the charge wasn’t even attempted.

WTH is going on???? With the price increase, the shipping delay and now this billing SNAFU, I am super annoyed and poised to cancel.

I emailed them back. Should be interesting to see how long it takes them to get back to me and if the issue will even be resolved!!!!

Elizabeth

You might of dodged a bullet hunny. My box this month had expired face masks in it

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

I just saw the masks expired!!! WTH EXPIRED IN 2004 and 2009

Paula

This place is too weird – so about 6 hours after I got the email telling me my payment failed, I got an email the saying my order was confirmed. Still no response to the email about the failed payment though. Sounds fishy to me…

Reply ButtonReply

MzBev

I didn’t have a problem with the billing. I got an email yesterday, thanking me for my order. I barely got the May box last week, so I’m hoping they ship quicker this month – especially with the price increase!

Reply ButtonReply

Layla

This month was horrific and then they follow it up with a $3 increase????? The only thing I kept out of that box was the bh brushes, the rest went into my instagram giveaway box.

Reply ButtonReply

Lisa

I also got the dark highlighter and it works great as a bronzer and is also a very pretty lippie. I also liked as eyeshadow but I did find it irritating so I went use it on my eyes again. Thanks for the idea of mixing w lotion and applying to legs. As far as color goes it’s nice that others without pale skin can enjoy this color.

Those bh cosmetics brushes are actually not meant for the eyes though like you used them for. I mean you can use them however you want but I believe they’re intended for contouring, sculpting, highlighting like the box says, not for the eyes like you thought it was.

Reply ButtonReply

Marne Orenich

Hmm yea it is pretty general and talks about contouring on the box, though the info card says to “shade and illuminate your eyes”. I think I just locked onto that. Whatever works though!

Nikki

I agree I don’t understand the complaints! I feel like you are getting more here than you would from Ipsy or Sephora play which is in the same price range. I ended up LOVING the PawPaw in Grape. I can always use more small brushes… and those are going right in my travel bag to keep at work for emergencies. (Make up emergencies LOL) … My replacement item was a very dark purple lipstick. Which I LOVE because we never get such bold colors like that in boxes. I would have been upset if it was a nude! Plus I love darker shades of liquid lipsticks personally 🙂

The only thing I was disappointed in was the highlighter. I got the same very dark shade that you have above and my skin is so porcelain it definitely will not work for me. All in all, it’s the only item I’m listing for swaps! Happy so far and hope next month will only get better!

Lisa

My Ipsy was way better than what I received this month. And I got concealer lipstick!! I have never received an Ipsy worth less than $40 and Rickys was like $30 if that . I am trying Cult Crushes for one more month to see if $14 gives us better boxes .

I got this liquid to matte lipstick in Kiss of Death.

Love the smell of the wipes! I am glad I got those instead.

We got the crystal sand highlighter which is lighter and my daughter loves, she also claimed the mini brushes and eyeliner. I am really anal about laundry so am happy to try the laundry soap! We got the grape scent of the Paw Paw which is not my favorite scent but overall we are pleased with this box. I like that they occasionally send out things like the laundry soap that are a little different from all the other boxes.

I received a SIXTH item – a gorgeous brown gel eyeliner from L.A. Girl. I love grape and dislike strawberry, so I was happy to get the grape. My highlighter is in Moon Light and looks great. I left the soap bar sitting on my desk, and noticed that its gentle perfume feels really nice in the air, so I guess it’s staying on my desk. Brushes and micellar water are useful every day. To me, that was a fabulous month. Thanks, Ricky’s!

I got the pencil too, but mine is silver.

I got in the place of the water “Lip Freak Buzzing” in Cherry Bomb I was pleasantly surprised!

Reply ButtonReply

shari thompson

I was kind of frustrated but rather happily surprised today when I received my box and got “Lip Freak Buzzing” instead of the water with a retail of 10.00 tried it and love it is in cherry bomb. I also received the bronzer drops that are two dark. Yet I will find something to make it work. All and All I am pleased with the contents.

Reply ButtonReply

Lisa

I did not receive my water yet I also got wipes in their place. I also got the twilight highlighter which is too dark. I mixed it with my lotion and it looks gross. Turned my lotion brown. I am not sure why everyone thinks the soap smells so good. Just smells like regular bar of soap from grocery store. I got the watermelon paw paw so at least I got one thing I liked . By the way according to Cult Crushes brushes were worth $11 and total retail value was $40. Ya I don’t believe it either.

Sandy Eddings

Totally agree not worth it… Those mini brushe’s…. Hard as hell…. Did not get bioderm h20 which sux I got….. Soap, ointment grape, the brushes that’s it where’s my bioderm and I 💭 we got something else light a highlighter?? Not to mention I signed up 4-20 finally got my box yesterday bummer I’m bummed cause I heard they were great??? I didn’t even get half what others did and waited along time to get it…… I’m cancelling UGHHH

The rules for purity of a face product are NOT nearly the same as what the FDA requires for all eye products.

I’d caution against using a body luminizing product on eyelids. It may have ingredients which aren’t meant to be used on the eye area.

Thanks for the heads up, Mandy!

This is my first box and I can’t complain. People expect too much for $11 I swear. I do understand that boxes have been better in the past, but come on. I’m hoping to see palettes again in future boxes especially with the price increase. I got a brown shimmery eyeliner as my gift which is eh but I’m not goin to complain. I also got the twilight shade and I’m as pasty as they come, but I love the idea of mixing it with a lotion and using it on my legs! Love that idea. Im hoping next months are better but it’s all good.

Reply ButtonReply

Nikki

Oh I didn’t think about it. Use it on legs as a makeshift bronzer! Maybe I won’t put it up for swaps then! LOL

Reply ButtonReply

Sharon

I received the LA Girl Glide eyeliner in Black Amethyst. I’m okay with it. I also received the twilight bronzer which I’ll have to figure out how to use. I’m going to give them another shot just to see how next month will be.

Did anyone else get two boxes? I got one a couple of weeks ago and then another one today. ?

Reply ButtonReply

Monica

I got 2 boxes. I received 1 a few weeks ago and then my 2nd one yesterday. I got charged in April when I first ordered and then again 2 weeks later for May. I was thinking I should have received an April box and may box but I got 2 May boxes.

Reply ButtonReply

Vicky H

I received 2 boxes as well. They didn’t charge me for the second and just told me to keep it. Both had a welcome gift. FYI – I am a new subscriber.

Reply ButtonReply

Maria

I got two boxes. So weird. As far as I can tell, I didn’t get charged. No wonder they are having issues. Their system internally isn’t doing them any favors.

The cleansing bar is a PERFECT inclusion in a makeup box. How many of us have gotten foundation on a collar? Lipstick? I wish more would think ‘out of the box’ with stuff like this!

Reply ButtonReply

Chanell

I agree, I suffer from makeup transference so I was happy about the unique and thoughtful item

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

I originally was complaining about the box… until I received mine. It did come on time and it had everything as promised. It was my first month so I can see why others who were long time customers would complain. I did get the crystal sands highlighter, it’s gorgeous. I love the paw paw and use it every night and morning now. My daughter is packing the Bioderma and mini brushes on her cruise next month. As for the laundry bar at first I was upset about it until my teenage daughter lit up bc she always needs a laundry remover and she can use the bar for female situations, I’m hoping it’ll work. I did cancel as soon as I got the box but I ended up getting a decent amount of usuage out of the box so back to the waiting list I go. The waiting list isn’t open until mid June… I figure by then I’ll at least have seen the new spoilers.

Reply ButtonReply

TheOtherJulia

I was the same way. It was my first box, and it did not seem as great as the previous ones sent out. But then I got it and started using the products, and I have been pleased with what I received. I have used the highlighter several times, I use it all over my face after my skincare, sunscreen and primer, and I like it. I have been obsessing over highlighters and luminizers, trying to recreate that “youthful glow” that has disappeared on me. I was going to cancel, but I will keep them for a few more months and see how I like the boxes. I know a lot of people canceled right away, but that seemed a bit impulsive to me. I was happy with my box, and I am looking forward to next month.

Morgan

Maybe you guys can mix a couple of drops of the highlighter with some body lotion for a glowing/bronzing oil effect instead of trashing it?

Reply ButtonReply

Dea

I wear sunscreen every day – I mix two drops of the highlighter into it, slather it on, let it sink in, and then top it with translucent powder. Looks great!

Reply ButtonReply

This is a good idea! I got the dark one too and have fair skin. I found it looked pretty on top of eyeshadow for a bronze halo effect. Made my blue eyes pop.

Shanelle

My box came with the Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water. Weird, I wonder how I got one and its supposed to be shipping to Cult Crushes in a week? Oh well, I’m happy mine was in the box and I don’t have to wait for it in the mail. But, on even a higher note, I was extremely happy with the bronzer color being dark. I subscribe to a lot of subscription boxes that seem to have a lot of misses for me, because the make-up is for light skin. But, today I’m in luck because I have bronzer for my carmel brown skin tone that looks BRONZALICIOUS on me! Thank you Cult Crushes!

Marne Orenich

That’s awesome to hear, Shanelle! Glad you got a great shade this time! Hehehe BRONZALICIOUS! 😀

I got the Bioderma too! bronzer looks awesome on legs too mixed with lotion =)

I’m not sure how they were forthcoming with all of this. I didn’t get an email from them until over a week after they took the money. this is my 4th month with them and they’ve always sent the box within a few days of that. I got my box Tuesday and did get the Bioderma, somehow and an added eyeliner. There was no note or card about the eyeliner, so I’m assuming it was a sorry we’re late extra. (which was nice)

They dropped the communication ball this month though. I’m sticking with them, for now; curious to see how it goes with the price increase. I’ve been pretty happy with my previous boxes and am hoping they learned from all the mistakes this month.

Reply ButtonReply

Olivia B.

It’s interesting that so many people said they didn’t get any communication from Ricky’s about how late everything was going to be and the free gift for the missing cleaning water…I got tons of emails from them keeping me updated! And I appreciated it.

Reply ButtonReply

MzBev

Wow, my comment finally posted. I submitted that days ago.

I would have appreciated getting emails, along the way too! Oddly, I got one from them tonight that they will be billing this weekend and that we will be getting our boxes before new subscribers. I do appreciate this email and that they will take care of current members first. Keeping my fingers crossed that the May issues won’t happen again.
