Ricky's NYC Cult Crushes May 2018 Review
There's been a lot of drama this month in the Cult Crushes world due to them shipping a ton of orders really late (and long after everyone was charged). This stung particularly bad because it came soon after they announced the subscription would be increasing from $11.00 to $14.00 starting in June. I happened to be in the "super late shipping" chunk of subscribers, so I just received my box a couple days ago when it normally comes mid-month. Apparently, they were waiting for a shipment of the Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water that still hasn't come and they decided to finally ship it without and subbed in something else to tide us over. Once the Bioderma comes in, they will be sending it out in a separate shipment.
We just got word our Bioderma shipment is officially arriving next week. We’ve heard you loud and clear and we don’t want to keep you waiting, so we’re working overtime this weekend to ship out your May boxes minus the Bioderma.
In its place we’ll provide an extra little goody, and as soon as we get the Bioderma next week we will send it to you as a separate shipment.
As frustrating as I'm sure it is to a lot of subscribers who waited extra long, I have to say that Cult Crushes was really forthcoming the entire time about what was going on via email and social media and seemed genuinely panicked and sorry for the whole situation.
Now let's check out what came!
First, you'll see an info card that lists all of this month's Cult Crushes. This month is all about "Clean and Gleam" and will get squeaky clean before getting you gleaming.
Comodynes Micellar Solution Makeup Remover Towelettes for Normal Skin, Pack of 20 – Retail Value $6.99
So this is what they included in my box to replace the missing Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water. Makes sense! I actually received a pack of this makeup remover wipes in my very first Cult Crushes box back in October of last year. I recently learned that an ideal evening routine should include two types of facial cleansing. I was pleased as pie to learn this since I normally use a wipe like this first to remove my makeup, and then use a cleanser to really get my face clean before retiring to bed.
The Laundress Wash & Stain Bar - Retail Value $6.00
There seemed to be a lot of shade being thrown at this item from the Cult Crushes community and although I get that this is certainly not an item to be expected in a beauty box, I kinda don't mind it. I haven't gotten a chance to test it out on real life stains in the wild, but the bar smells super clean and fresh and it's small enough to tuck away in a tight spot in the laundry room so you can grab it when you need it. It also travels well since it's solid. Beware though, Cult Crushes sent an email warning subscribers to refrain from use as a brush cleaner (as some had mentioned doing) or to rinse thoroughly since it contains borax which could cause eye irritation.
Pure Paw Paw Ointment in Grape - Retail Value $4.95
We first reported in our spoilers that the paw paw ointment came in strawberry, but it actually has several scent variations. I happened to get grape which I'm not totally over the moon about, but I do love grape candy and this smells really similar. Aside from having the most adorable packaging of any like-product, this ointment helps repair severely dry or chapped skin. I will personally get way more use out of this come Winter, but I tried a bit on my chronically dry elbows and it seemed to soften them up without being greasy. The info card mentions using this as a lip ointment as well so I'll probably do that!
JCat Aura Glow Liquid Highlighter in Twilight - Retail Value $8.99
This was probably the item I was most excited about because of my growing obsession with highlighter. I've been using a stick highlighter recently and have been craving a liquid one like this. Subscribers received a random color, and I was bummed to receive one that is extremely dark for my pale skin. Drat! As someone who has a skin tone that most beauty products are catered to, I'm not going to be too cranky about it, I just happened to lose on this one. Even as a bronzer, this doesn't really suit me, but hopefully I can pass it to a friend it'd work on!
BH Cosmetics, Sculpt + Blend Mini Brush Set
Even though I am up to my ears in makeup brushes, this set of 3 mini brushes got me a little excited. I keep all of my daily makeup in a pouch so that I can toss it in my bag if I don't have time to put it on before work as well as it makes it easy to pack for trips. Having three small brushes that easily fit is kinda nice. I used the pointed round brush to apply eyeshadow and it worked rather well. I'm eager to try the other two to see how they can help me perfect my eye game.
*UPDATE: 6/14/18
Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water, 100 ml - Retail Value $6.90
Cult Crushes said they'd send this separately and they did indeed deliver. I got mine on 6/11 and was able to try it out yesterday. I used it in the evening and boy did it really clean off a lot of grossness from my face. I hadn't even worn makeup that day but the cotton ball I used was pretty dingy so I feel pretty satisfied that I can use this instead of my usual makeup remover sheets once I run out of those or if I'm looking to control the amount of cleansing I need. It didn't seem to irritate my skin either. Yay!
Verdict: I was really excited about this month's Cult Crushes when I saw the spoilers, but ultimately this one did fall a little flat for me because of misses with the variations. The $33.83 ($26.93 + the additional item sent later) retail value is still a good one for this $11.00 box, even without the brushes that I wasn't able to find a definitive price for. It's certainly not the highest value they've had but I still have the Bioderma Sensibio H2o Makeup Remover Water coming to me and I'd estimate that the brush set is at least worth $5.00. I'm excited to see what happens next month because I think they want to make good on their shipping mishap this month and be sure to keep subscribers with the cost increase.
