Gramma In a Box April 2018 Review

The box included a few business cards and three separate recipe cards for the three crafts. They were labeled in the order that you should make them so everything was planned out for you.

This card described the theme of this month’s cookies and candy which was celebrating Spring. On the back, it listed the contents of the box as well as a list of items that you would need from home. It also mentioned that the two sheets of included wax paper were to be used as placemats to make for easy cleanup.

Project #1: Marshmallow Flowers

The first included craft was a candy craft: Marshmallow Flowers. On the back, it listed all of the ingredients and allergen information which I thought was really helpful. The instructions were very detailed and step-by-step and I loved that there were helpful little notes in red such as “save half the chocolate for project 2!”

The first step was super easy: take the labeled bag of melting chocolate and melt it in the microwave. There were also instructions to organize the marshmallows by color so it was a fun way to get my 3-year-old using her sorting skills and keep her busy while I stirred the chocolate.

Next, I made little dollops of chocolate on the wax paper and let the kids add the marshmallows to make the flowers (they did their best!). The instructions were very clear: make the chocolate size a little larger than a quarter and use 7 marshmallows for your flower so you have enough for 6 flowers. The kids had a lot of fun adding the marshmallows (the ones that didn’t go directly into their mouths of course). Since we did it right on the wax paper I was able to just slide that out of the way while they set and lay out the second piece of wax paper for our second craft.

I am not a huge marshmallow fan, but the kids really enjoyed eating these little marshmallow flowers! They weren’t messy to eat and since it was just a little bit of chocolate (which was the part I actually did think tasted great), it was just enough for them.

Project #2: Colorful Bird’s Nests

Our second candy project was to make Colorful Bird’s Nests. We used the rest of the melted chocolate and I poured the bag of fruity pebbles in. My daughter stirred it up for us and then I was able to spoon the mixture into the 6 little paper cups that they included.

The kids had a lot of fun putting the little jelly beans into the nests to finish them up. They were very easy to make, cute and colorful. I wasn’t sure how these would be with fruity pebbles, but this was actually my favorite treat. Something about the fruity flavor with the white chocolate was surprisingly delicious!

Since they were in little individual cups I just picked them up and added them to the wax paper with our marshmallow flowers while those set. Then I could reuse the second sheet of wax paper for our cookies.

Project #3: Spring Cookie Decorating

The last activity was the cookie decorating. They included 8 cookies in fun spring shapes and had three little bags of pastel-colored icing. There were also 3 different types of sprinkles for us to use.

My daughter was able to easily add her own icing by just squeezing the piping bag. This was actually way easier for us than usual when we use a spoon and she didn’t need my help at all.

Once we made our cookies, we still had plenty of icing and sprinkles leftover even though my daughter was quite generous with the icing on her cookies. It seems like every project was pretty well planned out and proportioned. The cookies and icing tasted great as well. They weren’t anything amazing, but they tasted homemade and we enjoyed them!

In the end, we had 20 finished products: 6 marshmallow flowers, 6 bird’s nests and 8 cookies (two didn’t quite make it into the picture - my son was a little more interested in eating them than decorating!). This was a good amount of treats and it didn’t leave us with a whole batch of cookies that would inevitably go stale which was nice. They were all bright, colorful and had that Spring feel and even better, they could be eaten right after we were done with our activities. There was no waiting or impatient kids whining for treats because by the time our cookies were done, our flowers and bird’s nests were ready to go.

I also really appreciated that each project came with its own individual recipe card because these are easy to keep to use again!

The best part of this whole process was that clean up was a breeze! I literally just put all of the empty containers and papers into the box that it shipped in and threw it in the recycle bin. Then I just had a little bit of wiping up to do, but there was no pile of dishes and I got to spend that time enjoying some treats with the kids.

Overall, we took about 30 minutes to create our treats and that was me flying solo with my 3-year-old and 21-month-old. Since everything was organized and thought out, I could really concentrate on helping them and doing it with them instead of my usual frazzled manner. It was a much more pleasant experience than I’m used to!

Verdict: Gramma In A Box felt like a completely homemade box to me, and I’m sure that might be a turn off for some people, but it really did just feel like Gramma sent us a package of goodies. The fact that they included all of the ingredient and allergen information and how well the box was organized made me feel as though someone put a lot of effort and care into the box. The directions were easy to follow and included every step, plus helpful extra information and the kids loved it. My three year old actually said on her own “I love everything! That was delicious!”

It was fun, easy and provided some great bonding time with my kids without the stress of having to plan it out or a huge mess to clean up. The box costs $20 per month and while I could probably create this for less in my own kitchen, I think that the convenience is an added value for busy parents or for those who don’t enjoy baking.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Brandi,
I received our May Gramma in a box today, it contains items to make butterfly cookies, mini marshmallow caterpillars, and big marshmallow pupa.

I like the theme of life cycle of a butterfly and think my son will enjoy these activities. I like that the box shipped via priority mail too.

P.S. Don’t tell anyone your child was excited to get his Gramma in a box, unless you’re sure they know it’s a kid’s subscription. 😆

What a cute baking box!

Sold. I normally don’t even read baking kit reviews because of the lack of value, but I guess the name drew me in. My kids are similar in age (just turned three last week and 16 months) and this would be perfect for my oldest. I’ve got her a stool to help me cook in the kitchen, but it’s not making cooking easier for me, ha ha. I love that this is a way to get her involved more and easy clean up! Simple activities! It seems like I can pretty much show her once and let her do the rest. It may not look pretty, but she will definitely enjoy herself.

What a cute idea! This would be a great box for people with small children.

What a really great and detailed review! Thank you, Brandi. I’m definitely interested after reading your review. My main concern would be the ingredients, so I will read up on that first before committing. My daughter is 2 and a half and since birth we have been giving her as little sugar as possible and as much “clean”, wholesome food as possible.

This box is ideal for families with children 5 and up. Also, if there are multiple children in the house or a play date with other kids, the 20 treats get divided so no one child gets sugar overload. Also great to send to college students living away from home.

Thanks, Kele! I’m glad you found it helpful. Also, that’s awesome you’ve been able to stick to the low sugar and clean foods- I was really great about that with my daughter up until I had her brother! Then I think I took on a whatever it takes to get through the day stance! 😉

Brandi, I think we have been successful because we only have one! I admire any parent with more than one child because my toddler is a handful and keeps us on our toes! 🙂 Your review definitely showcased a fun activity that I can do with my little girl because she always wants to help us in the kitchen and she would get a kick out of an activity where she can help with everything.

This is really neat. When I was younger any time I got a massive amount of candy (aka after the holidays) I would do something called “candy factory” where I would try to make new candy using my current candy. Everyone except me hated it. This is like the subscription box version with edible results.

Awesome!! My 8 year old does this too! 😃

Cute but seems highly unsanitary. Can’t cant over ziplock bags.

All the packaging is done by food handler safety personnel in a class A rated kitchen.

What is a grade A kitchen?? Now I’m even more suspicious. Seems like dirty hands loading up ziplock baggies. I’m out

Carrie

Agreed. It just seems a little TOO homemade. Love the concept, though.
