The Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross – Retail Value $17.99
Book Summary from Amazon:
Grave Mercy meets Red Queen in this epic debut fantasy, inspired by Renaissance France, about an outcast who finds herself bound to a disgraced lord and entangled in his plot to overthrow the current king.
Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron. Growing up in Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her. While some are born with a talent for one of the five passions—art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge—Brienna struggled to find hers until she chose knowledge. However, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true—she is left without a patron.
Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, she reluctantly accepts. But there is much more to his story, for there is a dangerous plot to overthrow the king of Maevana—the rival kingdom of Valenia—and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the throne. And others are involved—some closer to Brienna than she realizes.
And now, with war brewing, Brienna must choose which side she will remain loyal to: passion or blood.
FYI – there are a lot of maps and family trees at the very beginning of this book for reference. Personally, I found them daunting as it seemed like a lot of info to keep track of, but the writing was easy to get into and follow, so no worries there. BUT! There are spoilers that are key to the plot of the book in the family tree, so it’s kind of weird that they put it at the beginning of the book.
I’m enjoying the world-building and the writing style of this book. The plot is a little slow for me though – I’ve read this book for an hour at a time, but I have yet to have the “I can’t put this book down till I find out what’s going on!” experience.
And this book also included a promotional decal to go along with the book.
Born With a Reading List Notepad – Estimated Value $5?
This adorable little notepad is an Uppercase Box subscriber exclusive item. I love the illustration and the quote, and I need a to-do list every day, so this one is perfect for me!
Book Lovers Coffee Medium Roast – Retail Value $5
This is enough ground coffee to make one pot, or “just enough for those last few chapters.” A+ packaging, too.
Verdict: This box has an estimated value of about $38. I think the value is always there with this subscription – the book curation is very thoughtful, and it’s great getting a signed book each month. Plus, the bookish goodies are always cute!
