Magnolia Crate January 2018 Review
Here's the product list for this month's box, which is all about celebrating the new year!
Be Bold Be You Notecard by Haven Paperie - Estimated Value $4.50
While I couldn't find this specific design online, most of Haven Paperie's cards cost about $4.50 on their site. This is a 5.5" x 4" postcard-like notecard, rather than a folded greeting card, but it does come with an envelope. I like the encouraging message on the front and the colorful abstract flowers are cheerful and modern. I feel like this would be a fun thing to send to a friend, but it'd also be cute to give as a gift—just pop it into a bright frame (maybe yellow?) and boom! Instant inspiring decor.
Happy New Year Card by Katie Vaz Design - Retail Value $4.50
I love the texture of this 5" x 7" card. It's made of 100% recycled paper, which has dainty little speckles in it and a super subtle, almost newspapery texture (though the card itself is as sturdy as any other greeting card). Since I got this box at the very end of December (the 27th), this card will be a little belated, but it is pretty—the pink, champagne, and olive hues feel fresh after a holiday season of jewel-toned cards. Maybe I'll send this to someone out of town as a post-holiday catch-up.
Be Bold Card by Dahlia Press - Retail Value $5.50
The black letters on this 4.25" x 5.5" letterpress card are actually pressed into the paper, so there's a unique textural element here. The card itself has a nice grain to it. I like the simplicity of this card. The message feels similar to the first card, but the aesthetic is a bit more in tune with my style. This'll be a great card to send to someone starting a new job (or just hunting one) or embarking on a new adventure in 2018.
New Year's Cocktails Card by Haven Paperie - Estimated Value $4.50
This will end up being another "belated" card, but I like the simple, modern vibe. This design is also made by Haven Paperie, but it does fold. I should mention that I'm liking that each of these cards is blank inside—it leaves plenty of room for me to write my own message (which I love to do... at length).
Thank You So Much Card by Type and Title - Retail Value $5.00
Hooray for metallics! The gold foil letters on this letterpress card are gently depressed into the card itself for a neat textural element. The envelope is a really pretty petal peach color, too. Best of all, the timing on this all-purpose thank you note is perfect. I have plenty of gift-givers and holiday hosts to thank this year!
Write More, Text Less Pencil by Dahlia Press - Buy in a set of 6 for $10.00 here
Boy does the message on this pencil hit home for me! I like seeing this call to set the phone down and simplify peeking out of my pencil cup. I also just like old school pencils—nothing beats the nostalgic feeling of scribbling or doodling with number 2 graphite—so this was a fun extra item to me!
The Verdict: I liked all of the designs of the cards that I received, and I really appreciated that each card is blank inside. I just wish the New Year's cards would've arrived at the end of November (rather than the end of December) so I could've sent them out in a more timely way. Of course, if I don't use them this year, I'll definitely stash them for next holiday season.

Value Breakdown: I had to estimate the value for a few of these products, but I'm guessing that there's about $24.00 worth of goodies inside this $19.99 box, not counting the pencil. Most cards by small designers that I see in shops near me end up being around $5.00, so I'd say the value of this box is about even with what I'd spend at the store.
