This month’s booklet is incredible and really sets the mood for the snacks featured! I absolutely love the pinup graphic on the cover! Inside you will find a detailed look of every snack that is featured in the October Japan Crate boxes, some extra details on the bonus items for the month, and then fun facts about autumn and Halloween in Japan!
Halloween is a very big deal in my house so I am very excited to dig in!
Lipton Creme Brulee Milk Tea – Value $3.50
This fun beverage is made with caramelized sugar and vanilla custard to make the perfect “milk tea” (milk, tea, and sugar). The tea itself had a nice bitterness that cuts through the sweetness from the sugar and vanilla. Each sweetener makes this very rich and creamy so I wasn’t able to drink too much of it. While this isn’t something I would buy to drink on my own, I really loved the mixture of flavors that really tasted like a unique fall treat!
Hi-Chew Assorted Halloween (Buy a 3.35 oz. bag for $2.99)
These soft candies are extra chewy and fruity! I received the strawberry and green apple flavors and both were extra sweet with a mild tartness. I love the Halloween themed packaging that makes this perfect to hand out to your trick-or-treaters.
Pumpkin Lollipop – Value $0.25? (price guess based on similar items)
I love anything that coordinates well with a Holiday or theme so I love this cute little pumpkin lollipop! It reminded me of something you would get in a goody bag in grade school. The booklet notes that it comes in various flavors and I think I received the orange. I say I think because there weren’t any distinct flavors, just a creamy and sweet lollipop.
Pure Gummy Assorted Halloween – Value $2.00?
I have never seen such a unique packaging for gummies like this! I have received gummies from Pure in other snack boxes, but they usually come in a resealable bag. It looks like this package is the perfect size to hand out on Halloween night. Each gummy was extra sweet from the outer coating of sugar and flavor with orange that was oh so delicious and fruity!
Black Thunder Halloween Bar (Buy a full-size bag for $5.50)
When I first opened this I was thinking how it wasn’t the prettiest mini chocolate bar I have ever seen. Once you get past that though you are met with one delicious treat! The best way that I can describe this is a chocolate covered oreo in a mini chocolate bar form. It was so good in so many ways, with its creamy layers and crunch. I could have eaten a whole bag of these minis!
Okashi No Mizuame DIY Kit – Value $3.35?
This is the featured DIY kit for the month, and what better item to receive for Halloween than slime! Mizuame is a thick, sticky, syrup candy that is made specifically to look like slime. You can pick your flavor from strawberry, soda, or lemon. I tried the lemon and I think maybe I didn’t follow the instructions properly because mine was nothing like slime. I was a little too afraid to try to taste it as well. My last premium box came with instructions in the booklet so hopefully, there will be more detail around these kits next month.
Kumamon Umaibo Corn Soup Stick (Buy 30 for $8.27)
I received three of these umaibo sticks and they are all the same corn soup flavor. They are all featuring exclusive Halloween packaging though which is most likely why they included all three. I just received a corn soup flavor umaibo, and I had a hard time detecting any corn flavors. However, they are a bit sweet with a nice cheesy creaminess that makes sense for a corn soup flavor. These weren’t my favorite, but luckily my husband is obsessed with these so he was beyond happy to receive three more!
Each sitck has a similar look and flavor, but I did think some were cheesier than others. It could just be me though!
Chupa Chups: Exotic Tropic – Value $1.00?
I received the banana-strawberry flavor from Chupa Chups. I have received candies from this brand before and I always love them because they look like they are featuring fresh fruit. The flavors taste super fresh as well! You really get hints of real strawberry and a creaminess from the banana. I would love getting this yummy lollipop on Halloween! I wasn’t able to find this brand online, unfortunately, so I estimated the price based on receiving one.
Maple Butterbeer Ramune Candy – Value $2.00?
I love Harry Potter and Butterbeer, but this candy fell flat for me. I don’t know if it was the maple or ramune, but the candy itself tasted chalky. I didn’t get a strong flavor from either of these ingredients, but it all sort of just melted in your mouth. I wish maybe it was more of a hard candy that would allow you to enjoy the wonderful mixture of flavors that this candy has to offer. I did absolutely love the packaging and that they are bringing Halloween and Harry Potter together in one fun snack!
Monster Stamp Cider (Buy 50 bags for $26.74)
What a cute design, each candy is a little stamp with a monster face! The stamp itself is covered with cider so all you have to do is lick it and stamp it on a piece of paper to see the monster face appear. How spooky! These sort of tasted like bottle caps to me and are really hard so don’t bite right in!
Halloween Ponsuke – Value $4.00?
This lovely little snack was so savory, a little salt and a whole lot of caramel sweetness! The wafer itself is light and crispy that packs a lot of punch. The best way I can describe this is that it tastes sort of like a salted caramel corn, it was absolutely delicious!
Halloween Bonchiage – Value $4.00?
So much more than just a rice cake! These are actually flavored with a sweetened soy sauce, but you don’t get a ton of sweetness. The sweet flavor creates almost a creaminess to each bite of these rice crackers. They are so light and airy too that I couldn’t stop snacking on this whole bag! I have received snacks like this before in other boxes and I always think “oh great a rice cracker” but they always end up being my all time favorite snack of the month!
Kit Kat Mini: Caramel Pudding – (Buy a bag for $8.99)
When I think of Halloween candies that I got when I was little, Kit Kat bars are at the top of the list, especially the mini size! According to the booklet, Kit Kat releases a lot of different flavors in Japan and this is a Halloween exclusive flan caramel pudding. This really has all of the same textures of a Kit Kat on the inside, but the outer layer is a rich caramel pudding that creates a creaminess, unlike any other Kit Kat bar I have tasted. I could have eaten this whole bag, but I was nice and decided to share with my fellow Halloween loving family members!
Halloween Shimi Choco Corn – item no longer available
I received the coconut version of these little stars in another Japan Crate box and they were a huge hit in my house! A chocolate version though? Now that is something I can get behind! Each little puff is basically like a rice cake, but they were flavored with such a wonderful creamy chocolate. There wasn’t anything powdery or artificial here! Like the coconut flavor, my son could not get enough of these!
“Enjoy Halloween” Koala’s March – Value $7.87
I think this snack was popular when I was a little girl, I always wanted to buy them, but I remember my Mom would never let us. Probably because they were too delicious! I don’t know if it was the child in me wanting to rebel, but I ate the entire box in record time. The adorable packaging has a Halloween theme, which makes it perfect for this box. Overall, the snack is really simple, a crunchy cookie shell that is filled with a creamy, almost icing like chocolate filling. This was my favorite snack hands down!
Verdict: Japan Crate does the themed Premium boxes so well! As a Halloween lover, I really appreciate how much detail went into this box from the design of the box, the awesome graphics in the booklet, to selecting Halloween style treats that have incredibly spooky packaging. You open the box and you know exactly what theme and month you are looking at. I also received 17 items this month! Wow, so many snacks! With the monthly cost of $30, that breaks down to a value of $1.76 per item. Even though a lot of these items were harder to find to purchase online, based on sizing and similar products I have received, I would say that the value is absolutely worth it! Not only do you receive so many snacks, but they are all larger sizes that you can share with your whole family. We had so many leftovers in this box my husband took some into work to share with his friends! Japan Crate is always a hit for me and I can’t wait to see what November has in store!
