Fatman’s Beef Jerky in Jalapeno Lime, 1 oz. (Buy a 2 oz. package for $5.99)
Mmmm- the first jerky graces my palette to reveal a very subtle flavor. I’m not picking up the lime too heavily on this one, and the jalapeno takes a few moments to creep in. A fine jerky none-the-less that is sure to please the meat lover who doesn’t want to much spice, but something more than an original flavor. The pieces here are thin, with larger and smaller bites that aren’t too hard to tear through.
Fatman’s Beef Jerky in Maple Brown Sugar, 1 oz. (Buy a 2 oz. package for $5.99)
The second offering from Fatman’s Beef Jerky is a bit moister and chewier than its previous brethren. The maple brown sugar flavor is really present here and lends are sweetness to the savory beef. I’m really into this flavor!
Fatman’s Beef Jerky in Cajun, 1 oz. (Buy a 2 oz. package for $5.99)
The third and final flavor from Fatman’s Jerky is cajun, which isn’t too spicy to my palette at all. It’s dryer, like the jalapeno, but I’d say the jalapeno is spicier than this one. The cajun definitely has a warmer flavor if that makes any sense.
Golden Valley Meat Snacks Ripple Cut Beef Jerky in Black Pepper, 1 oz. – Value $2.19
Next up, we have the first flavor from Golden Valley, Black Pepper. A classic jerky flavor, this one is quite spicy! The texture is right in the middle of moist and dry to make it perfect. They’ve cut them into bite-size squares that are flat without being too thin. You can see all that pepper all over it. Woooo-eeee.
Golden Valley Meat Snacks Ripple Cut Beef Jerky in Teriyaki, 1 oz. – Value $2.19
Golden Valley’s second selection is the other classic jerky flavor, Teriyaki. Dang, this is tasty! I came up on this jerky box like “I don’t care for the sweet stuff” and so far I’ve been proven wrong! This sweet teriyaki flavor’s main ingredient is soy sauce, and even has pineapple juice concentrate in it! It’s really moist and goes down easy.
Dublin Jerky & BBQ in Pepper Beef, 1/4 lb. – Value $4.25 (@$17 per pound)
Dublin Jerky hails from Grand Rapids, MI and is really giving me a hometown butcher vibe! Their jerky is available per pound, and I got 1/4 lb of the pepper beef flavor that they offer. The first thing that sets this jerky apart is the natural shape of it. It straight up looks like a hunk of dried beef, which is exactly what it is! There is so much texture to it and you can see the spices that have soaked in. It’s extremely moist and a bit oily to the touch when you open it. It’s easy to bite into the thick cut of meat and the pepper flavor lingered with me the entire drive home after I chowed some down before leaving work last night. Super delicious!!
Newport Jerky Company Wicked Hot Beef Jerky, 3 oz. – Value $8.99
First off, this is a huge bag of jerky! Most of the others were around 1 oz., and they come in here with a 3 oz. bag. I can immediately see the pepper seeds throughout and meat is more of a red color than brown. I also have to give them props for packaging in a resealable bag so that I can rest easy and enjoy this jerky over a few days. HOLY CRAP they aren’t kidding that this is “wicked hot”! It also happens to be quite sweet as well. I can taste the brown sugar they’ve added prominently after the spice chills out a bit. This one might be a bit much for me, but would certainly please someone looking for a ton of flavor!
Tibbs Beef Jerky in Teriyaki, 1.66 oz. – Value $5
Although I like a moist jerky, there is something to be said for a dry, fibrous jerky too! This one has a really smoky flavor to it which makes the teriyaki not seem so sweet. These pieces are really satisfying to tear and I love the feeling I get when biting into it.
Kaimana Ahi Tuna Jerky in Lemon Salt, 2.75 oz. – Value $7.99 (on sale)
Last but certainly not least, we come to the outlier, Kaimana’s Ahi Tuna Jerky. The only non-beef jerky to come in this month’s box hails from Hawaii and is made from wild caught all natural Ahi Tuna. I love fish in general, so I was stoked to try this tuna jerky, which is new to me! The lemon salt flavor is also quite alluring since lemon is perfect for fish. Sugar is the first ingredient after tuna, which is very apparent once you bite in. There is definitely a fishy taste, but I think it holds up to beef in a major way! The lemon is light, and it has a salty finish overall. They have the nicest packaging, and I will again award points to having a resealable bag, but this is also the priciest item in the box.
Verdict: The Jerkist knocked me out with so much incredible jerky!! I had never had any of the brands that they sent and explored the uncharted waters of tuna jerky. They promise that their large box contains 16 oz of jerky, and this one weighed in at 16.41 oz, so that is like paying $3.66 per ounce with free shipping to try all sorts of new stuff. I’d say this is a must for the jerky enthusiast in your life!
