The Explorer by Katherine Rundell - Value $11.58 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)
I’ve always been a sucker for survival stories since reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This meant the plot of The Explorer intrigued me immediately. I found the dynamics between the four children who survive a plane crash into the Amazon interesting. It’s part survival story, part coming-of-age story and also has some mysticism as the kids search for the lost city of “Z.”
From Amazon:
Fred, Con, Lila, and Max are on their way back to England from Manaus when the plane they’re on crashes and the pilot dies upon landing. For days they survive alone, until Fred finds a map that leads them to a ruined city, and to a secret.
Author, Katherine Rundell, included a letter to OwlCrate Jr. readers about her personal experiences in the Amazon, as well as a bookmark and signed nameplate.
Toysmith Clip-On Compass - Value $4.75
A compass is a perfect accessory for a survival-themed box. This one easily clips to your belt loop or backpack. My son was very excited to get his first compass.
eeBoo Natural Earth and Science Flash Cards - Value $8.95
These cards are beautifully illustrated. Each of the 48 cards has a picture on one side and information about the animal, plant, natural phenomenon on the other side. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, it had interesting tidbits and was fun to read up on with the kids.
Exploration Notes Notebook - Value $2.00?
This notebook was made exclusively for OwlCrate Jr. It’s perfect for jotting down nature notes as you’re outside exploring. The size is just right for a pocket.
Airplane Button - Value $0.50?
Since the premise of this book is a plane crash, the airplane button was a perfect touch to the box.
BoyGirlParty Enamel Pin - Value $10.00
This book-loving sloth pin was designed exclusively for OwlCrate Jr. Based on the pricing for other enamel pins on the BoyGirlParty website I’m using a $10 value. I’ve linked to their website if you want to check out some of their other amazing pins. This pin will look great on my library tote bag; I love it.
The October OwlCrate Jr. theme will be Witches and Wizards. The selection will be a little bit spooky just in time for Halloween.
Verdict: OwlCrate Jr. was a big hit this month! They always do such a wonderful job with their curation and this month had a lot of fun and useful items. The value this month was about $38 which is slightly over the cost of the box ($27.99 a month plus $6.99 shipping). We love OwlCrate Jr. and highly recommend it for middle-grade readers.
