  1. Not to be too on-topic (lol) but I think this box looks great! I love that the items are pretty gender neutral and will make great gifts (already looking ahead to the holidays!). This photo is leaving me wanting more, so I hope Liz will post a full review. Does anybody know how soon the box comes out that the reviews are usually posted?

  2. Ah, the defensiveness of the carnivore. My favorite song.

    • It’s meat eater outrage. I don’t understand why it’s acceptable for carnivores to be outraged about receiving a faux leather purse or wallet, but it’s not OK for vegans and vegetarians to be upset about receiving a leather item. If one group can express their disappointment, so can the other group.

  3. I think this box was interesting, it is introducing me to new items I hadn’t seen. Happy Rebel is the only company that l saw reach out to members who live in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey to verify where to send the box too. I thought this was a nice gesture on their part.

  4. Just got my Happy Rebel box and am in L❤️VE! The wireless bullet hooked me but love the wall charger and the calf hair cord keeper is beautiful. So unique and well made – couldn’t be happier with my first box!

  5. I’m a vegetarian, have been one for a long, long time, and I can acknowledge this reality: Vegetarians are annoying. All of us. When we stop being able to laugh at ourselves, we become even more annoying.

    • My best friend is a vegetarian & if she hadn’t have been cracking jokes while ordering food one night, we probably wouldn’t have ever met. She loved this comment for many, many reasons.

      • Sounds like your bestie and I would get along 🙂

  6. I think Happy Rebel has had some great boxes but I don’t love this one. Glad I passed but will continue to keep my eye on future spoilers!

  7. This is my first Happy Rebel boxed and I love it, it embodies exactly what the theme was. The earbud spoiler reeled me in and the other items just made thus a fun box to receive, it was well curated. I am sure many others are as delighted as I am, great job Happy Rebel!

  8. This box is amazing! I love every item. I am an ongoing subscriber but I actually added a second box for this quarter. Great value! I love that cord keeper. I purchased a second box because I knew my teen son would steal the earpiece from me but he probably won’t want the cord keeper so I’ll get two of them. Lucky me!
I’ve cancelled so many subs recently as I was getting burned out but Happy Rebel is always so different. I’m cutting back to just 5 subs (well attempting to) and HR is on that short list of keepers. Great box.

  9. If the calf is already slaughtered for food anyway (very humanely, of course), isn’t it respectful and environmental to use the hide for something useful? And if cows and calves were not raised for food, they wouldn’t exist at all, as there is no other purpose for them. That’s just how it is.

    • Watching a few undercover slaughterhouse videos might change your mind (or not, I suppose).

I’m any event, we’re all entitled to like or dislike items in our boxes without telling each other we’re wrong.

      • Erin,
I totally agree. Watch a few docs on Demand, on HBO, especially Death on a Factory Farm. It made me go vegetarian 9 years ago when I saw it, but fortunately now we have more options of buying organic meat. I was vegetarian for five years because of that documentary. I think the cord keeper is well made, but I’m very surprised that Johanna of Happy Rebel chose this item to be included. We don’t really know if the animal was treated humanely?

    • There’s no other purpose for cows other than being eaten???!! Smh 🙄

      • The ignorance of the comments on this blog never ceases to amaze me. That’s right, cows are only here for food, that’s the only reason they exist. Maybe we should start eating hummingbirds, if we aren’t eating them they shouldn’t be here. Are koala bears next?

        • Omg???? Cows are only here for food? Wow!! Enjoy your calf hair cord keeper. I will have mine up for swap. But the thing that gets me is how ignorant people are. Watch some of the HBO documentaries

          • You obviously missed the sarcasm of my comment. If you scroll up, Annabelle said that if we didnt raise cows for food, they wouldn’t exist since they have no purpose. I was sarcastically rephrasing what she said. Do you really think I want to eat hummingbirds and koalas??
There are plenty of people who share Annabelle’s views, that only people matter. But I’m not one of them. I was vegetarian for 23 years before I went vegan 6 years ago.

        • Kathleen, my comments were definitely not geared towards you. Sorry!!

  10. Why cant people just understand that a business will do what it pleases, if you don’t like the fact that not everything is vegan start your own company.

    • Maybe since the last huge piece was vegan, they thought they would get a little bit of grace for a small leather piece this time.

      • And therein lies the crux of the sub box curator. Unfortunately there’s just no pleasing everyone (just look at the answers to MSA’s sub preferences surveys – lol). For every person who doesn’t like leather you’ll find another person who hates faux leather, and vice versa. One person’s hit is going to be another person’s miss. We’ve all been on both sides before. That’s just the chance you take with subs.

        • This.

        • Agreed!

  11. I agree, totally. This is what I’ve been looking forward to all week. Innovation? No. I have enough cord keepers. My box arrives tomorrow and I’m bummed. Johanna and Happy Rebel chose this route to go.

  12. I do not understand the instinct to leap at the chance to attack others for what they choose to care about (or the implication that caring about animals is a bad thing). I like this subscription and the theme for this month is right up my alley. I am super excited to get to try the earpiece and the rest of the items. I wish the cord keeper had been almost any other material and I will 100% be swapping it.

    • Agreed – I’m surprised to see an animal product in this box, I wasn’t expecting that. I don’t get the knee-jerk reaction to people not liking leather – it’s bizarre. Caring about animals is great! And yes, one may be qualified to care about animals, even if they are not a fruitarian who lives in the hollow of a tree.

On top of including the animal product, the rest of the box is a bit disappointing. I hope they turn out something better in the winter.

      • Why are you surprised? It is not a vegan sub.

        • I am surprised because of the price point of the box, and because I had thought they’d hadn’t included leather before (unless they did and I completely missed it).

But, looks like they will include animal products, or at least small pieces. So now I know…

  13. I’m ambivalent about this box which is a little bit of a bummer because this is my favorite sub and I adored the last three. I’m not bothered by the calf hair thing since I’m a carnivore/leather user so that’s not it. It’s just nothing super exciting. Wish I could have a second one of the summer box instead. Oh well. I’m sure winter will be fantastic and I can gift or swap these things.

  14. Im just wondering if its really even calf hair. I have purchased faux animal fur and it was called by what it represents even tho it isnt real animal fur.
Anyway. Im thrilled about the two featured items. I cant wait for my box.

    • Ohhh it’s very real. And very hairy. I just got my box and tried to give away the cord keeper to a group of meat-eating, leather-wearing coworkers. They are all creeped out by it and consensus is that it “looks like a dead mouse.”

I can’t even give this thing away!

  15. That coozy sleeve looks pretty cool!

About the calf hair: It’s basically the other side of leather. So if you have a problem with leather, you’re going to have a problem with calf hair. But if you’re okay with leather, calf hair should also be okay. From what I’ve read, both are very much a product of the dairy and meat packing industries. The animals aren’t bred just for the hide and sometimes it is taken from animals already slaughtered for the meat. Still if you avoid animal-based products, calf hair is definitely not for you.

  16. I love the practicality of these items and will most likely use all of them. However, I just think the pouch is not very attractive looking. I was hoping for a pouch for my electronics but this one is not something I will be proudly displaying.

  17. Not angry exactly, but don’t want anywhere near me. I wonder if we can ask them to remove from box?

  18. Oh dear….Here comes all the people who are going to be furious over the calf hair cord keeper. Though I must admit, it’s an odd material to use for such an item.

    • The cruelty free Vegans will be on the rampage.

      • I’m not vegan or even vegetarian, but I would be bothered if I got this in a subscription. People can not like something without it being mocked.

        • Just as people can laugh if they feel like it. 😁

          Be well.

          • You’re not “laughing”, you were condemning and criticizing other people.

YOU be well. Up there on your high and mighty perch.

          • 👀🍿

      • Not a vegan or even a vegetarian. My personal thing is not to eat or use baby animals. Not on a soapbox about it; just came to realize that it was bizarre to foster kittens but eat/use other babies. It’s what is right for me.

What hit me with this particular product is that it is skin and fur. Again, I have leather pocketbooks, so no better than anyone else. But subscriptions should give me joy. This won’t.

        • I’miss pretty sure it’s just leather, it’s not made from baby cows.

          • Also, kitten heels aren’t made from kittens, so you probably can wear those, too! It seems folks with sensitivities to these kinds of issues may want to educate themselves before getting upset.

        • I’m not 100% certain, but I believe calf hair is actually made from adult animals. It’s the other side of leather.

          • Kitten heels not made from kittens 😲. I almost snorted coffee through my nose. Next you are going tell me girl guide cookies are not made from actual girl guides.
I have been veggie forever and I can’t say this bothers me in the least, I wear leather shoes, buy leather purses etc. People just need to chill out and stop judging, if you don’t like it swap it. BTW isn’t this the same as the 1951 calf hair purses?

    • Wow- look at all the furious people rampaging.

      • I don’t hear any “rampaging”, just some people expressing their mild opinions.

        • Yes…that was my point. My comment was a sarcastic response to Amber & Katy’s judgment of others before anyone even posted an opinion.

          • We weren’t wrong, now were we? Excuse us for beating out the negative complaining with sarcastic humor. Heck, since we were first, I bet we even prevented some negativity. 😁😁

          • My “judgment” was clearly sarcastic. I don’t need to wait for anyone else to post an opinion, because I’ve been on this site long enough to know exactly what will happen. Remember the anger over the FFF FREEBIE gummy vitamins that vegetarians and vegans were so upset over because they contained gelatin?

          • I remember the FFF free gummy fiasco!! How obscene was that? So crazy.

I hope the people who put these boxes together have thick skin. I know many of them follow the comment feeds for their boxes, including this one. Don’t trash someone else’s hard work because it didn’t meet your particular standard. Just unsub and move on.

    • LOL… They are so upset that the cord is from calf hair but don’t care about the children who are probably making the product under bad working conditions.

      • You don’t know that.

      • You think Happy Rebel’s suppliers use child laborers?

        • This box just isn’t anything I even like. Hopefully Happy Rebel will do a better box for Winter. Last winter’s box was amazing.

      • Why would anyone be railing in this thread about child labor?? There’s nothing in this box that implies it is any more likely to be made in such conditions than any of the other products we consume in this country. So there’s zero reason to make your assumption.

      • I contacted Happy Rebel last night regarding the calf hair product. She provided the link to the American Etsy Shop. The items are made one at a time by a 4th generation leather crafter who is a woman.

No child labor is associated with this product. I was also surprised to learn last night that I was the first person to contact Happy Rebel with questions about the product.

        • I didn’t contact Happy Rebel because I’m very pleased with my two boxes but thank you for letting me know.
It’s funny that the Robb Vices box contains a handmade leather notebook made from buffalo and people are ooohing and aaahing over it (myself included – it really is beautiful) but then folks here bash another artisan and HR for including a handmade leather piece.

          • I was thinking about that too. This may not have anything at all to do with it, but a part of me can’t help but wonder if it’s because the cord keeper is hairy 😁 The hair makes it look and feel a bit too much like animal; much more so than smooth leather. I’m going to get my hands on one of those beautiful notebooks too, but I don’t think I’d want the hairy cord keeper or a hairy notebook 🙂 Maybe that’s just me. Another possibility is that HR and RV are just two very different groups, or HR includes a subset of people the RV doesn’t. Who knows.

        • I contacted Joanna too, and told her about this thread. She needs to defend herself.

          • I hope she doesn’t dignify this thread with a comment.

There is nothing wrong with speaking to your preferences of an item, wishing for a different style or color or even saying a particular item is not to your tastes. I wish people could do that without attacking each other and making crazy, baseless or potentially damaging comments.

          • I agree with Miriam. I’m sure Johanna is reading the comments but she doesn’t need to respond.

        • That’s not true. I e-mailed them Friday during the day, as soon as I saw this post. Granted, I was asking about taking it out, not the person who made it. The person talking about child labor meant the electronics, I assume, but it’s still a completely ridiculous and serious allegation to make just because you’re annoyed by some vegans.

      • This comment is seriously out of left field. Unless you have information that Happy Rebel is employing child labor or using vendors that do, it’s irresponsible and wrong to post statements like this.

If you do have that information, you should post it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
