Not to be too on-topic (lol) but I think this box looks great! I love that the items are pretty gender neutral and will make great gifts (already looking ahead to the holidays!). This photo is leaving me wanting more, so I hope Liz will post a full review. Does anybody know how soon the box comes out that the reviews are usually posted?

Ah, the defensiveness of the carnivore. My favorite song.

It’s meat eater outrage. I don’t understand why it’s acceptable for carnivores to be outraged about receiving a faux leather purse or wallet, but it’s not OK for vegans and vegetarians to be upset about receiving a leather item. If one group can express their disappointment, so can the other group.

I think this box was interesting, it is introducing me to new items I hadn’t seen. Happy Rebel is the only company that l saw reach out to members who live in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey to verify where to send the box too. I thought this was a nice gesture on their part.

Just got my Happy Rebel box and am in L❤️VE! The wireless bullet hooked me but love the wall charger and the calf hair cord keeper is beautiful. So unique and well made – couldn’t be happier with my first box!

I’m a vegetarian, have been one for a long, long time, and I can acknowledge this reality: Vegetarians are annoying. All of us. When we stop being able to laugh at ourselves, we become even more annoying.

Alexis

My best friend is a vegetarian & if she hadn’t have been cracking jokes while ordering food one night, we probably wouldn’t have ever met. She loved this comment for many, many reasons.

Jen

Sounds like your bestie and I would get along 🙂

I think Happy Rebel has had some great boxes but I don’t love this one. Glad I passed but will continue to keep my eye on future spoilers!

This is my first Happy Rebel boxed and I love it, it embodies exactly what the theme was. The earbud spoiler reeled me in and the other items just made thus a fun box to receive, it was well curated. I am sure many others are as delighted as I am, great job Happy Rebel!

This box is amazing! I love every item. I am an ongoing subscriber but I actually added a second box for this quarter. Great value! I love that cord keeper. I purchased a second box because I knew my teen son would steal the earpiece from me but he probably won’t want the cord keeper so I’ll get two of them. Lucky me!
I’ve cancelled so many subs recently as I was getting burned out but Happy Rebel is always so different. I’m cutting back to just 5 subs (well attempting to) and HR is on that short list of keepers. Great box.

If the calf is already slaughtered for food anyway (very humanely, of course), isn’t it respectful and environmental to use the hide for something useful? And if cows and calves were not raised for food, they wouldn’t exist at all, as there is no other purpose for them. That’s just how it is.

Reply ButtonReply

Robin

There’s no other purpose for cows other than being eaten???!! Smh 🙄

Reply ButtonReply

Kathleen

The ignorance of the comments on this blog never ceases to amaze me. That’s right, cows are only here for food, that’s the only reason they exist. Maybe we should start eating hummingbirds, if we aren’t eating them they shouldn’t be here. Are koala bears next?

Erin

Watching a few undercover slaughterhouse videos might change your mind (or not, I suppose).

I’m any event, we’re all entitled to like or dislike items in our boxes without telling each other we’re wrong.

Erin,
I totally agree. Watch a few docs on Demand, on HBO, especially Death on a Factory Farm. It made me go vegetarian 9 years ago when I saw it, but fortunately now we have more options of buying organic meat. I was vegetarian for five years because of that documentary. I think the cord keeper is well made, but I’m very surprised that Johanna of Happy Rebel chose this item to be included. We don’t really know if the animal was treated humanely?

pilar

Why cant people just understand that a business will do what it pleases, if you don’t like the fact that not everything is vegan start your own company.

Reply ButtonReply

Stacey

Maybe since the last huge piece was vegan, they thought they would get a little bit of grace for a small leather piece this time.

Sammee

And therein lies the crux of the sub box curator. Unfortunately there’s just no pleasing everyone (just look at the answers to MSA’s sub preferences surveys – lol). For every person who doesn’t like leather you’ll find another person who hates faux leather, and vice versa. One person’s hit is going to be another person’s miss. We’ve all been on both sides before. That’s just the chance you take with subs.

Ashley

I agree, totally. This is what I’ve been looking forward to all week. Innovation? No. I have enough cord keepers. My box arrives tomorrow and I’m bummed. Johanna and Happy Rebel chose this route to go.

I do not understand the instinct to leap at the chance to attack others for what they choose to care about (or the implication that caring about animals is a bad thing). I like this subscription and the theme for this month is right up my alley. I am super excited to get to try the earpiece and the rest of the items. I wish the cord keeper had been almost any other material and I will 100% be swapping it.

Reply ButtonReply

Erin

Agreed – I’m surprised to see an animal product in this box, I wasn’t expecting that. I don’t get the knee-jerk reaction to people not liking leather – it’s bizarre. Caring about animals is great! And yes, one may be qualified to care about animals, even if they are not a fruitarian who lives in the hollow of a tree.

On top of including the animal product, the rest of the box is a bit disappointing. I hope they turn out something better in the winter.

nelliebelle1197

Why are you surprised? It is not a vegan sub.

Stacey

I’m ambivalent about this box which is a little bit of a bummer because this is my favorite sub and I adored the last three. I’m not bothered by the calf hair thing since I’m a carnivore/leather user so that’s not it. It’s just nothing super exciting. Wish I could have a second one of the summer box instead. Oh well. I’m sure winter will be fantastic and I can gift or swap these things.

Heather

Im just wondering if its really even calf hair. I have purchased faux animal fur and it was called by what it represents even tho it isnt real animal fur.
Anyway. Im thrilled about the two featured items. I cant wait for my box.

Reply ButtonReply

Erin

Ohhh it’s very real. And very hairy. I just got my box and tried to give away the cord keeper to a group of meat-eating, leather-wearing coworkers. They are all creeped out by it and consensus is that it “looks like a dead mouse.”

I can’t even give this thing away!

Tamara

That coozy sleeve looks pretty cool!

About the calf hair: It’s basically the other side of leather. So if you have a problem with leather, you’re going to have a problem with calf hair. But if you’re okay with leather, calf hair should also be okay. From what I’ve read, both are very much a product of the dairy and meat packing industries. The animals aren’t bred just for the hide and sometimes it is taken from animals already slaughtered for the meat. Still if you avoid animal-based products, calf hair is definitely not for you.

I love the practicality of these items and will most likely use all of them. However, I just think the pouch is not very attractive looking. I was hoping for a pouch for my electronics but this one is not something I will be proudly displaying.

LynnDeanne

Not angry exactly, but don’t want anywhere near me. I wonder if we can ask them to remove from box?

Reply ButtonReply

Amber

Oh dear….Here comes all the people who are going to be furious over the calf hair cord keeper. Though I must admit, it’s an odd material to use for such an item.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

LOL… They are so upset that the cord is from calf hair but don’t care about the children who are probably making the product under bad working conditions.

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

This comment is seriously out of left field. Unless you have information that Happy Rebel is employing child labor or using vendors that do, it’s irresponsible and wrong to post statements like this.

If you do have that information, you should post it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

PA Anna

I contacted Happy Rebel last night regarding the calf hair product. She provided the link to the American Etsy Shop. The items are made one at a time by a 4th generation leather crafter who is a woman.

No child labor is associated with this product. I was also surprised to learn last night that I was the first person to contact Happy Rebel with questions about the product.

Tamara

Why would anyone be railing in this thread about child labor?? There’s nothing in this box that implies it is any more likely to be made in such conditions than any of the other products we consume in this country. So there’s zero reason to make your assumption.

Erin

You think Happy Rebel’s suppliers use child laborers?

Robin

You don’t know that.

Justine

Wow- look at all the furious people rampaging.

Reply ButtonReply

Robin

I don’t hear any “rampaging”, just some people expressing their mild opinions.

Katy

The cruelty free Vegans will be on the rampage.

Not a vegan or even a vegetarian. My personal thing is not to eat or use baby animals. Not on a soapbox about it; just came to realize that it was bizarre to foster kittens but eat/use other babies. It’s what is right for me.

What hit me with this particular product is that it is skin and fur. Again, I have leather pocketbooks, so no better than anyone else. But subscriptions should give me joy. This won’t.

Jackie

I’m not vegan or even vegetarian, but I would be bothered if I got this in a subscription. People can not like something without it being mocked.
