Dollar Shave Club has their own little newspaper called "The Bathroom Minutes" and it's actually pretty fun. Their September issue talks about getting back to the grind, whether that's work or school.

The first couple of pages has a reoccurring section "Ask Mike" where people ask the Dollar Shave Club's Chairman, Michael Dubin. Plus a "FAQ" of grooming questions. I like that they have a sense of humor that you see throughout.

Next, they have a bunch of fun facts about sleep.

And then they explore the different way the word "grind" is used.

There's even a short article about how if you're going to eat meat, doing it in the morning isn't the worst idea you've had (very relevant to my interests). Plus there is a member spotlight!

They finish out with a puzzle and how to fill out some questions to get paired up with the perfect grooming products.

Hehehe. Zombie comic.

Ok- let's get into the goodies!

Dollar Shave Club started out simply selling a razor that you could get auto shipped to you each month. That makes one less thing to think about it in your busy life, right?

I chose the middle of the road "4X" razor, which has four blades, as you may have guessed. You're basically paying for the set of four disposable blade heads and get the handle for free the first time you order.

The first thing I liked about this was the crisp white color, but then I noticed the nice weight it has as well. I'm used to buying fully disposable razors from Target that are plastic and marketed specifically to women, so they come in yellows, oranges, and pinks. This one is rubber, plastic, and metal, so it feels substantial.

The blade head itself has the four blades I mentioned before, plus that little strip that helps it glide against your skin. My normal razors have three blades, so I wasn't quite prepared for how freaking smooth my legs would be after running this quad jobby over them! There wasn't any tugging or snags which can happen when your razor isn't working hard enough.

When you get your delivery, the handle comes alone, and you snap it into one of the blade heads in the tray. There's a little button on the top of the handle that allows you to detach the used blade head once you're done.

The four blade heads come in this smart little container. Love the simple design.

There's more of that Dollar Shave Club humor. They also remind you to change your blade each week. Personally, I don't shave every day, or sometimes even weekly, but the surface area I shave is much larger than a face. I wonder if this is a guide for the average dude who shaves their face daily.

Pull the little tray out and expose your new blades!

Dr. Carver's Easy Shave Butter, 6 oz. - Cost to Add $8

I decided to go further than just ordering a razor and got the Easy Shave Butter as an add on. Dr. Carver is DSC's own brand for anything shave-related. Again, they have stellar packaging and I really love the deep blue color that all of the Dr. Carver products are packaged in.

The shave butter itself smells wonderful and allows the razor to glide effortlessly along my legs. It has the perfect consistency that's in between a cream and a gel. I'm not a fan of foams either, so this shave butter is the perfect product for me. I also noticed how incredibly moisturized my legs felt after I got out of the shower as well. This stuff really conditions while helping shave.

DSC also has a full line of hair and shower products, so I thought "why not try those too?".

Wanderer Body Cleanser in Awakening Mint Cedarwood, 12 fl. oz. - Cost to Add $9.50

I was about to run out of body wash, so I ordered a bottle of the body cleanser they offer. There are two kinds, and since I'm a morning showerer, I went with the "Awakening" Mint Cedarwood (as opposed to the "Calming" version that smells like Amber & Lavender which sounds equally amazing). At first, I thought that it smelled more "masculine", but then I remembered that even as a woman, I'm allowed to like smelling like a minty tree instead of flowers and candy. I LOVE IT.

Also- let's talk about more super cool packaging with really gorgeous deep colors. I know it's dorky to be into body wash packaging, but did you get a glimpse of that meerkat?

This body cleanser made me feel so incredibly clean. I'm not sure if it's the scent or what, but I felt like I was in a commercial, stepping out of my bathtub and sniffing in the freshness. It is also insanely moisturizing, like their shave butter. I kept petting and sniffing myself all day. Don't judge me.

Wanderer Hydrating Hair and Scalp Shampoo in Sage Black Pepper, 8 fl. oz. - Cost to Add $9.50

Maaaaan, I love anything that smells remotely like black pepper, and I also love sage, so this is a dreamy smelling shampoo. If you've read other reviews I've done on hair products, I'm always complaining about my thin limp hair and how it's greasy or stringy or blah blah blah. I recently found a fancy expensive product that I like, but it's a treatment that I can't use daily, so I was looking for something to use in between. This shampoo totally fits the bill! It's not heavy so it doesn't weigh my hair down. This gets just lathery enough to feel like it's really getting the grime out.

Wanderer Hydrating Hair and Scalp Conditioner in Sage Black Pepper, 8 fl. oz. - Cost to Add $9.50

The conditioner smells just as nice and does a great job of keeping my hair silky and light. I only use just a tiny amount since I never want to overdo it with conditioner. My hair is super soft and easy to comb once I get out of the shower.

The best part is that you save 20% when you buy these two together! They are $9.50 each but only $15 as a set.

Verdict: Um, Dollar Shave Club is my new jam. I had no idea they offered so many products! I'm super geeked on how nice their packaging is, and how well the products actually work. It's also refreshing to not have all of my shower goods drenched in pink pastel colors and the like. I am down to live that unisex grooming product lifestyle, and Dollar Shave Club is doing a great job helping me find the way. Plus, if you want to try some of these, but don't want to spring for the full size, they have new Trial Kits you can order, as well as Starter Sets!

I always love reading the reviews and comments section. (GREAT, honest, and funny review Marne…I’m a packaging junkie, too. ) I agree with well, almost everyone, LoL. I’ve tried DSC, Harry’s and Dorco. I am sticking with DSC. I too like the 4x, the Executive is to much for my legs & underarms (don’t try to shave “other” parts because the trimmer will KILL you, unless you like walking like you’ve been riding a horse cross-country….I don’t judge!! 🙂 ) and the 4x doesn’t clog as much with the shave butter. I liked the quality/sharpness, color of the Harry’s blades but they clogged way to easily. The Dorco razors & blades are less expensive, and they have AMAZING deals, but I found that the part that hold the blade to the handle is very flimsy. We have a stone tiled shower floor, (my hubby loves “home projects”, lucky me!! But some actually turn out great, hence my Spa shower.) and when I dropped the razor, first time and it shattered the mechanism that holds the blade to the handle I was really disappointed because I had all the blades and no handle. (I know it’s my issue, but I’ve dropped the DSC and haven’t had the same issue, because of the way it’s made. Just my personal preference.)
So ladies, I think it all comes down to what you personally prefer. I love reading the comments and hearing everyone’s trial n error, and I appreciate everyone’s input. Thank you!! (I wish I’d known about MSA prior to trying all of the companies, LoL).

I just started this sub last month, and I’ve been really happy with it. I like the four blade razor, while my husband prefers the two blade. I’m in love with the shave butter. Just before coming here to check on updates, I was adding more of it to this months shipment.

I recently cancelled my DSC sub after many years. I found that the quality of the razors was declining. It used to be that 1 of their razors would easily last 2 weeks with me shaving my legs every day. But it was down to the point that I was changing them every 4 days. I’m going to try Harry’s next and see how that goes.

Dani

So were you shaving EVERY DAY?? Do you think they are good for just once a week shaving??

I recently switched from DSC to Harry’s as well. Seems Harry’s had the better deal on cost per blade when I compared them to DSC’s top option. The only thing I’m missing so far is the shave butter– which I LOVED. I’m not a fan of Harry’s shave foam, but the post shave balm is NICE. WHY HAVEN’T MEN TOLD US HOW AWESOME POST-SHAVE BALM IS?!?!

I’m enjoying my Harry’s razors so far as well. I think they do a better job of packaging and letting you customize when you get your blades. (I was getting way too many through DSC, and they’d only let me hold my order for so long before they sent more.) Oh, and I use it on my face, too, because I’m too darn lazy to wax my upper lip.

The only gripe I have is that the Harry’s blades seem to get clogged more easily because they’re spaced closer together, but that’s remedied as long as I rinse them frequently throughout my shave.

Please let us know your findings, Annie!

Just an FYI – the link is for a $5 starter set – not $1.

I’ve been meaning to give this a try…. I’ve heard good things.

Thanks for the heads up, Steph! Updating momentarily…

I was a subscriber to DSC for a while. But they got bought by another company and the quality went down hill. Razors starting breaking all the time. I had to get a new handle every month. I still LOVE the Shave Butter and Shave Oil and Repair Serum and buy those regularly. I tried another subscription razor company called Harry’s and didn’t like it either.
Recently (like in the last 4 months), I started buying razors from a company called Dorco. They are SO MUCH BETTER. It isn’t a subscription service, but they have amazing prices and great sales. The quality is much, much better. I feel like the shave is much better too.

FYI Dorco is the company that makes the blades for the Dollar Shave Club, so the quality of the products should be pretty much equal. But it’s true that purchasing from Dorco is so much more affordable.

DivineMrsDiva

Interesting because the Dorco razors and handles are much better quality than DSC.

I love DSC!! Such an amazing value. I’ve tried both the 4X and the Executive and was surprised I actually prefer the 4X. I kept nicking myself with the edge trimmer blade on the Exec. Very fun review to read, Marne!

Marne Orenich

Ah, good to know! I must admit, I was a little intimidated by the 6-bladed executive, so I’m glad I went with the 4X!

My husband and I both enjoy DSC! We have our own handles and he even has a spare at work. I get the blades every other month which still lasts forever even tho my hubby shaves his head and goes thru a lot of blades. Def recommend!! We get the executive which is six bladed.

I LOVE the razors! As someone who always used cheap disposables, I had no idea what I was missing. One shave and I was hooked. I don’t go through a pack monthly and it is so convenient that they have every other month, or even a three month hold option.

Shay

I canceled Dollar Shave Club for the Angel Shave Club. Huge mistake! DSC’s razors are way better (IMO) so once I’ve used up my last ASC razor, I’ll be coming back to this company! Great review!

Marne Orenich

Excellent to know, Shay! Thanks for reading and weighing in!

TK

Wow, I didn’t know they had women’s razors. I’ve been using the men’s for months. They are the absolute best!!! Their products are amazing too. The shave butter is so moisturizing.

Reply ButtonReply

Marne Orenich

Yep- it’s the same (unisex) razor! Sorry for the confusion! The title is mainly speaking to reviewing from a woman’s perspective instead of a man’s. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

T

Thanks for clarifying, the title was pretty misleading. I expected it to be the same as the men’s but more expensive. LOL

K8

They don’t–the title of the review threw me off, but this is just the regular (men’s) 4x.

I’m also a woman who uses DSC, and as far as I know they only have the 3 (male) options (which work perfectly fine. Just don’t use the executive on your armpits 😱)

I LOVE this sub! The razor just glides and does the job quickly! I am adding the shave butter to my next order. We get the blades every other month. (my daughter and I share the sub, but with our own “handles” lol) I have recommended them to several people! The price is great for high quality razors.
