MSA Exclusive Interview with Foodstirs Founders

Thanks to Sarah Michelle Gellar, Galit Laibow, and Greg Fleishman for answering all of our questions!

What was the main inspiration behind starting Foodstirs?

As working parents, we loved the distinctive way baking allowed us to unplug and truly connect with our children in the heart of the home – the kitchen. We believe that everyone can bond (and thrive) over food-crafting, so the three of us made it our personal obsession to take the guess work out and develop a simpler way for anyone – from adults to children – to create delicious, Instagram-worthy baked goods.

Where do you get your inspiration for each kit, both for the recipes and creative presentation?

We are constantly looking at current trends  in the marketplace, social media as well as our children for inspiration. We find the ideas and then put our Foodstirs spin on them. Our subscription service is based around themes, including holidays, so that definitely helps guide some of our creativity.

How far in advance do you need to plan out each new kit? Are there any exciting new flavors coming our way soon?

We plan kits about 6 months out. It’s a very collaborative process that includes our whole team (even the interns and our children who help test each idea!). As parents, we were really excited at the prospect of taking the guesswork out of baking and creating a fun activity that allows families to connect in the kitchen. We want to make it so exciting that even our own kids continue to look forward to their Foodstirs kits. We wait to reveal the craft/kit until one week prior to shipping it, maintaining that fun element of surprise for our subscribers. We definitely have some new exiting flavors coming soon – hint, think Fall goodness.

Any plans for a gluten-free and/or low sugar option?

Not yet.

Have you thought about developing kits for younger kids, aged 2-4 years? Any creative ideas for how we can encourage preschoolers in the kitchen in the meantime?

Although the ideal age of our kits is 5 and up, we find that with adult supervision, our products are fun for the tiniest of bakers. Just giving children specific tasks, like mixing or cracking an egg, enhances not just their curiosity, but everything from their fine and gross motor skills, to their vocabulary and love of science and math. Baking involves so many important life and developmental skills. But it’s the connections and memories we create, that continue to serve as the driving force behind our passion for this brand.

Normally when I ask my daughters how their day was I usually get a one-word answer, yet the second we pick up a whisk and start baking together, they open up. Stirring, baking, and eventually eating together, creates a unique bond that can’t be duplicated in any other way. And, if our Foodsitrs kits seem too advanced, our organic mixes might be the perfect solution. We’ve developed these yummy mixes (chocolate chip cookie, brownie and vanilla cake) to be easy, quick and delicious. Would you consider sending out recipes so that people could recreate everything without a packaged mix at home?

We have an amazing team that creates recipes on a weekly basis using our base organic mixes. These recipes can be found on our site (and all across our social media channels).

Do you have a favorite Foodstirs story that you’d like to share with our readers?

In the first few months after launch, we received an overwhelming amount of customer feedback. One in particular that stood out, was from a mother with a teenage son. She had been trying to get him to stay home on Friday night for years and one night she had the Foodstirs box on the counter, and she asked if he wanted to bake with her. To her surprise (and delight) he did, and that night they baked and bonded.  She thanked us for the time that she got to spend, and the delicious treats. They now have made it a tradition. It’s the letters and the photos that we receive from our customers that make everything worth it.

I have no artistic talents but with clear directions I can recreate it!

  48. I think it would be cool to have different types of kits with difficulty level. Like some no-bake and then others much more intense and teach you some baking techniques and people can choose the level that works for them.
