This month’s theme is “Fantasy" and the information booklet includes each item with a brief description. This also contains a note from the curators regarding the end of this subscription.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Pin - Value $4.99

The world of Harry Potter definitely works with the Fantasy theme and subscription boxes have really upped my pin game! In my growing pin collection, I somehow only have one HP pin so this is a welcome addition. MACUSA stands for The Magical Congress of the United States of America and I'm happy to put this next to my Ravenclaw pin. The pin itself is lightly weighted and the backing feels sturdy.

Black Butler Wallet - Value $21.99

There were two possibilities for your second fantasy item. You will receive this wallet or a Legend of Zelda Scarf. The design features purple flowers and pentagrams. I'm not super familiar with the Black Butler manga but, from what I read online, Black Butler is about an aristocratic teen solving crimes in London while plotting revenge against those who killed his family. It looks like it also involves cultists and demons! This looks like a pretty wild manga and I'm excited to have a new series to start. This wallet has plenty of slots for cards and a zippered center pocket for change. It feels really lightweight but the zipper seems sturdy.

Kingsway West by Greg Pak and Mirko Colak - Value $10.39 on Amazon (retail price $14.99)

This story takes place in an alternate present-day United States that is divided into regions based on ethnicities. This version of the US also includes monsters and dragons. Alternate histories can be really fun and this story does a good job of building a rich history for this familiar but fantasy world. I found this trade to be a fun and super quick read. I also really liked the coloring of the artwork.

Book summary from Amazon:

After spending thirteen years in a war that made him a monster, a Chinese gunslinger named Kingsway Law just wants to live in peace with his wife, Sonia. But even in a fantastical Old West crackling with magic, a man of his skills can never quite disappear. So when a woman with a red-gold sword brings bloody chaos to his doorstep, Kingsway must fight for his life, his wife, and his very soul.

Dragon Age: Knight Errant #1 - Value $1.99 on Amazon (retail price $3.99)

This is the first issue of Dragon Age: Knight Errant which takes place in the Dragon Age franchise. I definitely got the feeling that, if I knew everything there is to know about Dragon Age, this might be a little more interesting to me. I enjoyed the artwork and the pacing of the story was good but I wish I knew more about the surrounding world. I guess this gives me another thing to get into! As a standalone story, I did like main character Vaea and the final pages left me wanting more. This is the first issue of a 5 issue run so I think I'll finish it out and see if the rest of Dragon Age piques my interest!

From Amazon:

BioWare’s best-selling fantasy franchise lives on in these canonical comics from Dark Horse!

Elven squire Vaea and her knight arrive in Kirkwall for Varric Tethras’s appointment as viscount. A talented thief, Vaea takes on an easy job . . . but when she chooses to change the terms of the deal midheist, she is entangled in a dangerous mission that is surely above her pay grade.

The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood - Value $15.58 on Amazon (retail price $26)

It’s been a while since I’ve jumped into a fantasy series so I’m excited for The Evertide. It's always fun to immerse yourself in a world with new maps, creatures, and terminology. This is the first book in The Evertide series and one of my first thoughts, when I flipped through this book, was that the sporadic artwork was really cool. That makes total sense because I then found out that Todd Lockwood is an illustrator, specializing in fantasy art!

I read through the prologue and a few chapters. We follow Maia and her family who raise dragons. I like Lockwood's writing style and the plot is easy to sink into. I'm excited to see what happens to Maia!

Book summary from Amazon:

The debut novel from the acclaimed illustrator--a high fantasy adventure featuring dragons and deadly politics.

Maia and her family raise dragons for the political war machine. As she comes of age, she hopes for a dragon of her own to add to the stable of breeding parents. But the war goes badly, and the needs of the Dragonry dash her hopes. Her peaceful life is shattered when the Summer Dragon—one of the rare and mythical High Dragons—makes an appearance in her quiet valley. The Summer Dragon is an omen of change, but no one knows for certain what kind of change he augurs. Political factions vie to control the implied message, each to further their own agendas.

And so Maia is swept into an adventure that pits her against the deathless Horrors—thralls of the enemy—and a faceless creature drawn from her fears. In her fight to preserve everything she knows and loves, she uncovers secrets that challenge her understanding of her world and of herself.

Verdict: Paper Street Books and Comics has always been a fun box for me so I'm a little heartbroken that this is the final one! I always appreciate the exposure to writers and illustrators I may not have found on my own. This month included a pin from the Harry Potter universe and a really promising dragon novel so I'm happy! I'm also excited to dig into Black Butler and Dragon Age. While I am sad to see Paper Street go, the Fantasy Box was a nice final package to receive!
