POPSUGAR Must Have Box - June 2017

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: A Novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid

From Amazon:

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Captain Blankenship Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray - Value $24

This spray is made with all organic and natural ingredients: Water, Atlantic Sea Salt, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Sea Kelp Extract, Organic Rose Geranium Essential Oil & Organic Palmarosa Essential Oil.

Aloha Collection Mid-Size Ocean Coco Palms Pouch - Value $36

Pack your waterside essentials in this splash-proof zip pouch. The print will encourage you to get on island time and will protect your snacks, sea salt spray, and hat. You can also use it to store your wetsuit, dirty gym clothes, or other essentials as you run around town.

This pouch is made from 100% coated Tyvek, so it is splash proof. (They don't call it waterproof, since you can't submerge it in a pool for example, and expect there to be no leaks onto any items inside the bag.)

But it is perfect to use as a swimsuit bag, makeup bag, beach clutch, etc.

The material has a crinkly feel, but it is still pretty soft. And it measures 11.5" across x 2" wide x 8.5" tall so it can store a lot. Here it is with a few items to give you a better sense of scale:

I’m so excited for this box! Its definitely my style. The book is just eh, but I may enjoy be surprised and enjoy the read. Crossing my fingers it gets here before we leave for vacation.

Suzanne

Liz, do you have any idea of when you’re going to have a full review up? It seems much later than usual.

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Review will be up in a few min! 🙂

Suzanne

Oo yay! Thank you! 🙂

I really hate this box. Especially if the included item is a hat like that. But, no biggie. This is just the nature of someone else shopping for you and a whole lot of other people, as a surprise. It’s the nature of these services. I’d say my love/hate for this box, after getting it for a year, is probably around 70/30 and that’s ok for a surprise service of this nature. I hate when people act like it should be 100% they get what they love all the time. If you need that, then you should shop for yourself.

Has anyone heard about shipping delays? I still don’t have a tracking number…

Reply ButtonReply

anna

Nicole – I sent a message asking and got a response of “as noted in our FAQs, your box will ship by the 20th of the month”

Recently I’ve had mine in hand much earlier in the month (around the 13th). FedEx “smart” post shipping takes a 6-8 days to get to me. So if they ship on the 20th, I won’t get it until the 28th.
At least there isn’t anything I’m anxious to receive in this box 😉

Just received this email from them. They should have notified us sooner. I should have the box by now.:

We hope your Summer is off to a great start!

Just a quick note to let you know that your June Must Have box may be arriving at your doorstep a little later than usual. Unfortunately, one of the products in the box was delayed in getting to our warehouse. We are working as fast as we can to ensure your box arrives to you in great condition. Boxes have begun to ship and all boxes will ship by the 22nd of this month. You will receive tracking once your box ships. We can’t wait for you to see what’s in it!

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We’re here to help.

Best,

The POPSUGAR Must Have Team

Nicole

Thank you, Anna! I normally receive my tracking on the second Friday of the month [would have been the 9th this month] so I was just curious. I always worry that I’m going to forget about a box. Definitely not excited about this box. Going to get rid of the spray and the cuticle oil. I literally just unloaded the last cuticle oil they sent out yesterday and now I’ll have another one to get rid of.

Has anyone ever tried salt spray on a pixie cut? I have pretty fine hair, mostly straight, so “waves” are out of reach. I have several of these now and am wondering if they are actually the wonderful texturizing product I never knew I always wanted?

Reply ButtonReply

Emily l

I just started using one and like it a lot. I recently stopped dyeing my hair and it turns out that in its natural state it’s really limp. With the sea salt spray I’m getting better results with my mousse.

Reply ButtonReply

KK

Try them. They will basically thicken your hair and give you some texture. I used to use them every day when I had short hair (also straight and fine, but I have a lot of hair)

Stacey

I love this box – all four things fit well within the theme. This was absolutely worth the money for me considering I got it during the sale. Even without that, though, this set of stuff seems great for the summer.

Kaleigh

Where is our review? The May box review came out on the 4th. The March box review came out on the 3rd. Heck, the February box review was released the last day of January! The April review was the latest, at the 6th. We are already on the 13th of June. What’s happened?

Reply ButtonReply

Amie

It’s like they are stretching out these spoilers just to get my hopes up and then give me a little more buyer’s remorse each time.

Reply ButtonReply

Paula

Haha, I couldn’t agree more. I have been a subscriber for years and this box looks like one of the worst ever (for me).

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

I agree! One of the worst. The book would have been nice if it weren’t for my getting it as a Book of the Month extra….

Jennie

I think the box fits the theme really well. This hat will be great for going out on our boat. The book is not my bag, but I can find a home for it I’m sure. Love the pouch, very summery!

Reply ButtonReply

Joanna

I think a hat like this (if that’s what it turns out being) is great! It’s very on-trend and different than the typical fedora that boxes usually send. I bought one similar last year and it’s perfect for the pool. I’m not getting this box, but would love to swap for it!

Reply ButtonReply

I actually really love this box!! It’s perfect for a day at the pool/beach. I get we all have different likes/dislikes but this is a win for me! I wear hats a lot and I think this is cute! Personally I have loved April, May, and June so far! Didn’t like March but honestly the lunch box was so cute, I use the highlighter daily, and I actually use the red bag (can you believe it??) Bc it’s convenient and waterproof-ish. So I gotta say, even the one I didn’t like I’m still using. Here’s for one more item + a yummy snack for June! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Summersam

Totally agree!!! I was skeptical about the red bag but it’s actually super cool and I use it all the time. It’s the perfect size and also cool for going to the beach or on a boat bc of the plastic. If you think outside the box you can make these different items work. I am thrilled to get a baseball cap ( or hopefully get a baseball cap) instead of a straw hat! I wear hats all summer so this is a hit for me! The book is a hit, as it looks like a good read and the pouch and salt spray are awesome- I have naturally curly hair and I find salt spray holds my curls in the humidity and doesn’t make them stiff like hairspray…- it’s also good to scrunch damp hair. Love this month!!!

I was debating getting back into PS after taking a little break, and when I caved and re-subbed…this is the box it had to be. Sigh. I actually do like the hat, but that book is 100% not my genre, I have a million pouches already, and I tried sea spray once and will never do it again. (I have thick frizzy hair and if I don’t straighten it, yiiiiiikes, so using a texturizing spray is a nightmare for me.) Looks like I’ll be canceling after one box and not looking back a second time.

Reply ButtonReply

ML

I hoped the waves was for the salt spray but maybe it’s for this instead. Does that mean the mermaid item is the salt spray?

Reply ButtonReply

Beth

This gets my vote for worst box ever.

Reply ButtonReply

anna

Beth – worse than the red plastic purse box?

(I did use the watermelon “lunch box” for watermelon twice, but the plastic purse, photo album & highlighter are collecting dust and the marshmallows are in the pantry. )

Reply ButtonReply

Amie

I have to admit…I’ve used the red plastic purse as a travel bag for my toiletries and it’s working out better than my previous bag. Being able to see where things are is nice. I gave the watermelon lunch box to my nephew and the photo album and highligher to the trash can.

Caitlyn

This is the first time I’ve ever actually wanted a PopSugar box. I can tell I’m in the minority, but I love all of the spoilers! I burn easily no matter how much sunscreen I use, so a hat is a must-have. (Plus I actually think the hat is cute.) I like light reads over the summer when I’m not up to my eyeballs in law journals and ethnographies. I have stick-straight hair so the hair spray sounds amazing. And I love the pouch! I’ll probably actually snag one of these boxes.

Reply ButtonReply

Courtney

I agree with you. I like this box and am thinking about getting it. I think the hat is cute and wear ball caps to baseball games and when I’m outside. The bag is cute and the spray will be fun to try. The only thing I’m bummed about is that I picked the book as my BOTM club book ☹️ But I will probably give it to my mom to read. For those that are complaining I’ve been where you are. I began to hate Boxycharm because seriously who needs a damn highlighter every month? But cancel and try something new.

Reply ButtonReply

Jeannette

Well so far this box is gearing up to be a 50/50 split between my 19 yo daughter and myself. She will wear the hat to work (she is a lifeguard) and she loves those texturing sprays. I will read the book and probably keep the pouch since she took my last couple of pouches.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

I checked out the Billabong website. This is probably the best hat on the site. (This is not a compliment). Man, I hope it’s a towel. :-p

Reply ButtonReply

Gloria

I like the spoilers so far, but no way Im paying $40 for the box. June box seems unpopular so Im going to take my chances with the next mistery box.

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

Yiiikes, this box is awful. I hope there’s something delicious in this box, because I am going to need a comfort snack when it arrives.

Reply ButtonReply

Sharyn

Ha! A big bowl of cheese dip and chips maybe . . . summer in general seems to trip up the folks assembling these boxes. I remember last year was terrible!

Reply ButtonReply

Eileen

I agree! Just cancelled my subscription. A cheesy novel and matching trucker hat?!? Yikes!

Reply ButtonReply

Moe

Agreed. Gotta be one of the worst, if not the worst, in 2 years I’ve been getting it. A trucker hat?! 🙄

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

Sometimes I have to remind myself that the reason I’m getting these boxes is to push me out of my comfort zone and try new things I never normally would.

1) I like the pouch even though blue isn’t my favorite color
2) My hair is already a dreadful mess so I’ll either swap or gift the hair stuff
3) The book is nowhere near my style so I’ll either give it a go anyway or swap
4) The hat is way different from what I normally wear (just winter hats) and a color I doubt will look even halfway decent on me but I’ll try it.

It’s obviously not something I would curate for myself but again that’s kinda the point for me. As well as saving lots of money and trying out different things.

Reply ButtonReply

Shana

Oh please not that awful hat. I literally gasped when I saw it. So tragic!

Reply ButtonReply

Miccarty

Oh dear. Hopefully it’s the towel! Oh well, my four year old will steal it anyway if it’s the pink hat.

Reply ButtonReply

Miccarty

Okay just looked again, it’s not really pink, but still. 😉

Reply ButtonReply

Stefanie

The bag/pouch is literally the only thing in this box that i would even use. Sadness. That hat is ugly. I dont even own a single trucker hat, nor would i wear one.
