There was a full-color brochure listing the items and talking about the box’s charity efforts.
There was also a recipe for dog treats (unfortunately, Nyx can’t have oats).
Turkish Dowry Beach Peshtemal – Value $12?
I didn’t see this exact design in the TurkishDowry Etsy shop, so I gave this an average value based on similar items. The artisan makes these herself on a loom in her home (and she really lives in Turkey). Because I don’t subscribe to any lifestyle boxes, I don’t have an excess of these yet – in fact, this is my first one!
It’s quite a large towel (for size reference, Sneaky is a 10-pound cat).
Ocean’s Halo Maui Onion Seaweed Snack (0.14 oz) – Value $0.60 (buy a case of 24 for $14.33)
These are some of my favorite seaweed snacks (I’ve had them before, and I admit to eating these immediately after opening the box but hey, only 20 calories). They still do have a slight seaweed flavor, but the onion flavor hides it to a degree.
Himalayan Yaky Puffs (2 oz, fish flavor) – Value $3.99
Of course, there is also a snack for your dog! These include potato starch, Himalayan cheese, and fish powder. Unfortunately, cheese and fish are out for Nyx, but these should be good for a lot of dogs with less severe dietary issues. I will pass them along for someone else’s dog to enjoy.
Jellyfish Postcard – Value $1?
This wasn’t on the information card. There is a web address on the back but 95% of the site is in Chinese so the value is a guess. I do like the artwork on this (but one of my degrees is in biology so nature stuff is generally a good bet for me).
Whale Card – Value $1.50
This is another Etsy item. This is single-sided and would also work as a small framed print (in fact, it is a print of a watercolor painting). This Etsy shop is based in Russia.
NW Beauty Works Sea Kelp and Aloe Soak (2 packets) – Value $2?
I can’t find this item in the NW Beauty Works Etsy shop, but they had another sample sized item for $1 a packet so that’s where I got the value. I do like soaks with kelp in them although I find them very messy in the tub, so I just did a foot soak with this last night. It was pretty relaxing although the skin on my feet needs a lot of work…
Multipet Nautical Anchor with Rope – Value $6.40
This is supposed to float but we didn’t test that out (Nyx hates water). Nyx did enjoy playing with it although she destroyed it in pretty short order. I think her goal in life is to find the weak point of any toy and exploit it and she is really quite good at that.
Nyx was able to enjoy the toy this month…
…although it didn’t last super long.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $27.49 for the May 2017 Pet & People Parcel. That is a fair amount below the month-to-month cost of the subscription, but if you buy a long-term subscription and/or use a coupon, you can get your price down to $25 a month (or less), and then you are getting a much better deal. Do keep in mind that some of the prices above are Amazon and Chewy sale prices – the actual MSRP is going to be a bit higher. Furthermore, two of the Etsy artisans were international, so you couldn’t actually go and buy those items for the prices listed without paying shipping, too. (Actually, I was surprised the Turkish towel wasn’t more expensive based on the size and quality and the fact that it was handmade instead of mass produced.)
In terms of the items included, I liked this box. The ocean/beach/sea creature theme was fun and it was interesting to see how everything was carefully selected to fit the theme. The toy this month was a little better fit for Nyx than last time, too.
What do you think of the May Pet & People Parcel? Anything you’d like to see in future months?
