2013 Double J Ranch Sauvignon Blanc

I love Sauvignon Blanc, so I was very pleased to see this bottle in my shipment. I couldn’t find it available for sale online, but “The Wine Press” explains that both of Double J Ranch and Stateland Cellars share the same owner. (Each winery’s focus is a little different, though, and they produce different types of wine.) The grapes for this Sauvignon Blanc come from Napa, and the resulting wine is very smooth and easy to drink. It lacks the crisp bite of acidity that my favorite Sauvignon Blancs have, but there’s no denying its overall drinkability. I don’t think this is a bottle I would seek out again (it’s a little flat for me), but it’s certainly not bad.

2013 Stateland Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon– $19.99 (on sale for $9.99)

This Cabernet Sauvignon, on the other hand, is really impressive. I love Cabernet Sauvignon, and I think it can be really challenging to find well-balanced, sophisticated bottles at an affordable price point. This one checks all of the boxes for me. It has nice tannins, an underlying berry-flavored fruitiness, and a satisfyingly smooth finish. I poured myself a splash to taste for this review, and then immediately followed it up with a full glass.

Verdict: This is my first time trying Gold Medal Wine Club, and I’m pretty impressed! The packaging is lovely, and both of the bottles I received were good. The per-bottle breakdown for this box (including shipping) is $25. Truthfully, that’s higher than I like to spend on an everyday bottle of wine, but it’s not high enough to be a deal-breaker for me. Given that I enjoyed both bottles and loved the Cab, I’m okay with the value this month.
