UCO Clarus LED Lantern + Flashlight – Value $14.99

This is an LED Flashlight that can be expanded to also serve as a lantern. Here is an example:

It is true that we go through a lot of flashlights, so I was glad to get this one. However, I feel like I should point out that we received an LED flashlight in last month’s True North Supply Co. package. I don’t know that we need a new one every month.

The Camp Out Co. Multifunctional Credit Card Folding Knife – Value $11.99

This knife is good and sharp, and you really couldn’t ask for anything more lightweight. I think this will be a great addition for hiking and backpacking adventures!

Cyalume SnapLight Green Light Stick – Value $1.20

Since this is an emergency tool, I did not open it and snap it, but it basically works just like a glow stick. (The second picture is from Amazon so you can see it in action.) This is nice to have on hand.

Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki – Value $7.99

I’m starting to have a little stockpile of emergency / backpacking food thanks to subscription boxes. It will be interesting to see how chicken teriyaki stacks up against the others! We will definitely try this out on our next backpacking adventure. But again, I feel like I should mention that we received a Mountain House freeze-dried meal in our last package from True North also.

Flex Ties – Value $5?

I know what these are used for (to tie things down in camping situations) because we have received them in camping subscription boxes before. They are useful. Having said that, I have to wonder why they were loose in the box, with no packaging of their own at all, or instructions or anything. Last month they included a little piece of metal that you readers were so helpful in identifying to me as a can opener, but I thought that was strange too.

Coghlans Waterproof Matches – Value $0.50

These will definitely come in handy in the great outdoors! Fall is almost here, and we tend to get lots of unexpected rain here during our most active outdoors season!

Verdict: I had some issues with True North Supply Co. last month, in particular their low total value ($17) as compared with the cost of the box ($34.50). This month’s value is indeed significantly better at about $42. I am a little concerned about getting two repeated items two months in a row, however. I know True North is a new-ish company, and they are probably still working through some startup issues, but at this time I think it’s important to note that there are at least 2-3 other outdoors gear boxes that provide a better value and a better diversity of products. I also have a major eyebrow raised at the loose products in the boxes – do other people find that odd?

  1. I’m a camper as well, although I haven’t been fortunate enough to get out as much as I’m used to in the past couple few years. The 2 repeats were worth it, in my opinion. I’m not as organized as some of my friends, so I lose everything but my 4 cell maglight constantly. The most popular brand of freezedried food is Mountain House, and it’s good! I vote see it through for a bit longer!!!!

  2. It’s no Cairn box, that’s for sure. Keep trying, True North, or lower the price, and maybe I’d subscribe.

  3. The credit card knife value is definitely inflated. They’re great! And definitely sharp, but the flea market in town sells them for $1.50

  4. I received an extremely similar credit card knife as a freebie in an Amazon order. Charging $12 for that is a joke, you can find similar ones on AliExpress for under $1 shipped.

  5. I think the flex ties might have been in bigger packages and they spread them out over boxes this month. If the value was constant I’d buy this because my kidlets both camp (we old people have a 5th wheel) and all the items would be good to keep in the camping totes
