I decided to go with The Girls.

The Girls by Emma Cline - Retail Value $27 (On Amazon for $16.20)

Book Summary from Amazon:

Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged—a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence.

Emma Cline’s remarkable debut novel is gorgeously written and spellbinding, with razor-sharp precision and startling psychological insight. The Girls is a brilliant work of fiction.

This seems to be the book of the summer, so I had to get it. I'm only a few chapters in, but I can already see why this book is so popular. I was pretty much immediately drawn in by the story and the writing.

Each book is selected by a judge, and each judge includes a brief letter on why they selected the book. And you get a Book of the Month bookmark, too!

Verdict:  I'm very pleased with the value of my Book of the Month subscription. The prices are better than Amazon for new hardcover releases, and they always feature a good mix of popular new books. And I love that you can  kip any month you aren't interested in, and you can also buy books from previous months as add-ons for $9.99.

One thing to mention - all covers have the BOTM logo on them. It isn't an issue for me but thought it was worth calling out.

What do you think of the Book of the Month subscription? Which book (or books) did you pick this month? Have you read The Girls, yet?

I’ve loved the first two books I received, Eligible and Before the Fall. This time I chose Rich and Pretty, and I’m having such a hard time getting through it. I flew through the other 2 books. There is something about the writing that bothers me.

This is my second month. I’m the type of person who buys books and then they just sit there so I thought I’d try this sub to see if I would be more motivated to read if someone else chose the books. Last month was “Enchanted Islands” which I loved, loved, loved. This month is “Love that Boy”. Whoever is selecting books for me is really nailing it. Will def renew after my 3-month trial is over.

I just finished ‘The Girls’ over the weekend (from BOTM, of course). It was excellent! Very well written. Definitely disturbing, but we all knew that going into it. Lol

I actually love that it’s stamped with the BOTM logo! It makes the book feel like an exclusive. Plus I can carry the book in my bag, read in spare moments, and just leave it in the bag when i go to bookstores, Target, etc. without feeling like a thief, haha! Anyone else take stuff out of their bags BEFORE going into the store, just in case? 😛 Also, I agree that the book is fantastic so far! The writing drew me in immediately.

I do that all the time. I thought it was just me, but I’m glad to know someone else understands my random anxieties.

As a book snob, I thought have thing BOTM logo on the cover would bother me, but it really doesn’t. I’ll take a “BOTM” stamp on a book sleeve over “Now a Major Motion Picture” anyday!

I agree! Or “Oprah’s Book Club”…

This month, one of the books I received, Sleeping Giants, is one of the best books I’ve received from sub boxes all year!!

Ooh, I chose that book as a 2nd book this month so I haven’t started it yet. Glad to hear it’s good.

I got Rich and Pretty this month and so far it is really good! The website has book discussion groups for each book that is pretty cool. They usually send a little something with each book as well. This month I got a curly straw. I assume because the characters in the book ate best friends who drink cocktaiks together and have fun! I love this sub box!

I wish they would let you buy all 5 books. It’s so difficult making choices when you want every single one.
