VNYL Subscription Box Review – March 2016

VYNL is a new-ish and pretty interesting subscription service for record collectors. When you sign up for this service, you fill out a lengthy profile that includes not only your likes and dislikes, but also links to all of your profiles on digital audio services such as Spotify and Sound Cloud. They then ask you to choose a "#VIBE," which is an activity that you would like them to select the music for, such as studying or pool party. They then select 3 new albums and send to you based on all these criteria.

My Subscription Addiction one pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

VNYL often sends a flyer advertising their new releases. One of the perks of membership is access to the member store, where they have a variety of albums for sale at a discount. Records purchased in the member store are shipped free with your next month's regular shipment.

I chose #SPRINGFORWARD as my "#VIBE" for this month. My curator for this month was Sam (pictured above). He writes:

"Anna! I'm starting your #springforward box off with something special - because you're following Dinosaur Jr (and J. Mascis) on Spotify, here's their 2007 release, "Beyond"! They're one of only a handful of bands that have continued to stay interesting and relevant 30 years into their career, and I thought this would be perfect for ya...enjoy! -Sam"

Beyond by Dinosaur Jr. - ($17.99 on Amazon)

I am positively ecstatic about getting this! Good call, Sam! He's completely right on with what he says about Dinosaur Jr., and I've been a huge fan for most of those 30 years! Frontman J. Mascis is a long-time celebrity crush of mine - he's the best guitarist alive today! I have this on CD, but not vinyl until now. Score!

Electric Band by The Glass Family - ($39.56 on Amazon)

I'm also thrilled to get this album! This is a limited edition 2012 repressing of this 1968 rare classic. The sound quality is amazing. I love obscure psych / prog nuggets from the late 1960's and early 1970's. Plus, the guy on the cover (front left) looks just like Kirby Jenner!

Heaven by The Walkmen - ($14.99 on Amazon)

The third album is not something I probably would have bought for myself, but it's still great! The Walkmen sound a little like the Smiths with less dramatic vocals. I like it a lot! I also think all the retro photography on their album cover is beautiful.

Verdict: The day I get my VYNL in the mail is one of my favorite mail days all month! This has been one of my best packages from VNYL ever! I'm so excited to have such quality new tunes! The value this month was outstanding at $72.50, which must be some kind of record. Hooray for VNYL!

What do you think of VYNL? What did you get this month?

This post makes me feel old. Because when I was in college I saw Dinosaur Jr. in concert at some little club in Amherst, MA. The opening act was Krist Novoselic’s post-Nirvana band (which I don’t even think is around anymore). And now I am remembering that was close to 20 years ago…

It could be worse. You could be remembering seeing The Glass Family in college!

Was that ‘Eyes Adrift’? I remember seeing them too.

It was Sweet 75. There was a woman singer. I liked them but they never really took off.

Good selection this month! Loving the Dinosaur Jr and The Walkmen albums.
