Birchbox has recently released some new collections. This one is their Color-Treated Hair Collection. I’ve been dyeing my hair for over 20 years (eek) so I had to check it out.

I do have to call Birchbox out here. I have purchased several of these collections now and the oversized “pillow packs” just don’t work. When I got Mask Madness, the pillow pack had also come open and one of the masks was missing. No products were missing here, but you can see what happened to the packaging.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this collection. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Box: Birchbox Color-Treated Hair Collection

The Cost: $18

TAKEALEAP20 TAKEOFF20

COMEBACK20  MOBILE20

WELCOMEOFFER20 TAKEOFF10 or BEAUTYMAVEN

And don’t forget your free mystery sample pack on orders of $35 or more!

The Products: Hand-selected products to keep your color-treated hair in top shape.

The collection comes with a card detailing the items included.

Birchbox October 2015 Review Color Treated Hair Collection Box - kerastase

Kerastase Bain Chroma Captive Cleanse (80 mL) – Value $15.60

I know I’m probably supposed to avoid sulfates, although I don’t. But this is a sulfate-free shampoo that actually lathers pretty well. I’d need to use it for a few weeks after a fresh dye job to really assess its ability to preserve color, but so far, so good.

Kerastase Fondant Chroma Captive Treatment (20 mL) – Value $4.20

My hair just soaked this up. So much that I had to apply more. I got *maybe* two uses out of this container (I have waist-length hair that is pretty thick). It did a decent job at controlling frizz but I had to use too much product for it to be a workable solution for me. However, your mileage may vary.

Birchbox October 2015 Review Color Treated Hair Collection Box - n4oribe

Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect (1 oz) – Value $4.73

This is a longtime favorite product for me. It works really well as a detangling spray and leaves my hair soft and shiny without weighing it down.

Oribe Masque for Beautiful Color (0.5 oz) – Value $5

This worked better for me than the Kerastase conditioner. Although I still only got about two uses out of the container. I’m glad I liked it because I’m getting it in one of my Birchboxes this month (along with the matching shampoo and conditioner)!

Birchbox October 2015 Review Color Treated Hair Collection Box - shu

Shu Uemura Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Thermo-Milk (foil) – Value $1.90 (?)

I don’t generally use heat on my hair so I tried this as a leave-in. My hair was a little straighter the next day (it’s naturally kind of wavy) so I guess this is responsible. Maybe I used too much but I could kind of feel residue on my hair after using it. Or maybe that is what is responsible for protecting the hair from heat? (Sorry no size listed. I had tossed the foil packet before I realized I hadn’t recorded the volume. So the value is just a guess.) I was able to get two uses out of this by closing the foil back up with a binder clip.

Birchbox October 2015 Review Color Treated Hair Collection Box - mystery

I ordered some other stuff along with this to get my total over $35 so I thought I would share the contents of my mystery sample pack – Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Venezia and Clarisea Rapid Detox Charcoal Exfoliant for Face. Granted, I am familiar with both of these products already but it’s a pretty good mystery sample pack compared to some I’ve gotten.

Verdict: This collection has a retail value of approximately $31.43. That’s somewhat more than the cost of the collection. Plus, a lot of times in my monthly Birchbox, I get hair products that don’t really fit my needs (products for oily hair, products for curly hair, dry shampoo, etc.). This is a more targeted collection of hair products specifically designed to preserve and protect color-treated hair. While not everything worked for me, I was glad to get a chance to try some relevant hair products!

Their computers continue to have problems. I got the email yesterday to review my box, but the link took me to my October box. I wonder if they are expanding too fast.

You can’t review November box contents yet — not until the 9th. There are a few days left to review October boxes.

I got the e-mail as well, so I think it was sent to all subscribers. I was able to see my box in the account that ordered the curated box, but not in the account that is getting a regular box. I’m happy to see the curated box as this time around I just ordered it in one of the accounts without paying attention at what was in it – and it’s mostly stuff I will use. Birchbox has confirmed that their LOC makeup is made either in the US or Germany, so I’ll be using it or gifting it.

I got the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstic in Bella as one of the items in my mystery pack. Still have not used the one from my July box in the exact same color. I guess someone is getting it as a stocking stuffer.

They were sending out a lot of those for awhile. I have every color (and more than one of a couple of them)…

You know, every experience I’ve had with Birchbox customer service has been WONDERFUL. Until this month. My Birchbox Man sub was just a disaster. First, they over charged me for my add on, it took 5 days for them to get back to me, and it was a very generic “we have reversed the charge and charged you the proper amount” email. Next, my box showed up with a sample missing. When I contacted them, they sent it out 3 days later. Now, this is all fine and good, and from other companies, absolutely what I expect. But in the past, Birchbox customer service has always gone above and beyond- Once, they sent me a sample I had reviewed previously, and credited me 50 points to make up for the error. Once, I was charged incorrectly, and they apologized and credited me 50 points for the error. This time it was just WELL WE FIXED IT. Not saying I don’t appreciate the fixing- it was just different from the customer care I was used to. Two errors on their end with one box, and they just sent generic emails, didn’t overnight anything like they used to, and no apology points or anything. I was a little surprised.

My very first Birchbox had an eyeliner that was open (no cap in the box, either), so it was basically drawing all over the inside of the box and all over my other samples during shipping. I also didn’t want to use an eyeliner – you know, putting things that might not be clean near my eyes and all.

The first CS rep promised it would be sent out and that I would get a shipment confirmation via e-mail. No dice. Second try, same promise, still no e-mail. The third CS rep apologized, gave me 100 points, and did actually get the new eyeliner sent out, which I got all of three days later. It took about six weeks to get it all straightened out, which was only about a month ago. So I guess if they screw up multiple times, they’ll still dole out some points.

I resubbed to get the October power box on 10/21 and have not had any shipping notification at all. I emailed CS and the rep said, you’ll get a notification when it ships. Well…that’s why I contacted you! Why hasn’t it shipped yet when it’s been 12 business days? The second time I asked they said they don’t have shipping info for it but it will ship with the November box. At least that’s more of a solid statement but also not the type of response I’m used to from them.

Good luck. I started a new sub for Power Pose box and they shipped out a regular box and sent me an email saying they had run out of those boxes but they were sure I’d love the samples they sent, you know, Harvey Prince perfume, shampoo, the regular junk. They gave me 50 points but I would rather have had the option to not get the replacement box and get my $10 back.

Sara

I’ve had two issues with Birchbox, one I got the wrong thing than what I ordered and the 2nd my box went missing and I never got it. They sent a replacement box and sent the correct item, but I got 0 bonus points either time. They used to give out apology points, but I haven’t received them the last two times I had to contact customer service.

Yeah, I have been worried about all the commercials on TV and what that influx will mean.

I would still get on the phone with CS about those two errors and complain about the lousy CS. BB needs to understand the core sub box community sticks with it because of great CS and the perks!

Not, Josie.

I think the days of Birchbox being proactive and keeping customers happy are over. I recently purchased a few size conditioners and moisturizers at their recent pop up. I got home and realized, that all of my full size bottles were either testers or worse empties for display only. I had to call BB over and over again and complain that I was unable to return the product to the location, as it was the Road tour pop-up! Three months later, and at least five phone calls later. I finally received my replacement bottles. No apologies, no coupons, no credits. I also purchased my items at the pop up with a 20% off coupon–my credit card bill does not reflect that and BB customer service will not alter it. I still have a monthly sub, but am growing increasingly testy with each botched transaction.
