OwlCrate YA Book Subscription Box Review – June 2015 More Happy Than Not

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera - Retail Value $18.99 (On Amazon for $12.13)

Here is the book summary from Amazon:

Part Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, part Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Adam Silvera's extraordinary debut confronts race, class, and sexuality during one charged near-future summer in the Bronx.

The Leteo Institute's revolutionary memory-relief procedure seems too good to be true to Aaron Soto -- miracle cure-alls don't tend to pop up in the Bronx projects. But Aaron can't forget how he's grown up poor or how his friends aren't always there for him. Like after his father committed suicide in their one bedroom apartment. Aaron has the support of his patient girlfriend, if not necessarily his distant brother and overworked mother, but it's not enough. Then Thomas shows up. He has a sweet movie-watching setup on his roof, and he doesn't mind Aaron's obsession with a popular fantasy series. There are nicknames, inside jokes. Most importantly, Thomas doesn't mind talking about Aaron's past. But Aaron's newfound happiness isn't welcome on his block. Since he's can't stay away from Thomas or suddenly stop being gay, Aaron must turn to Leteo to straighten himself out, even if it means forgetting who he is.

OwlCrate YA Book Subscription Box Review – June 2015 Poster

This book also came with a poster and temporary tattoo.

OwlCrate YA Book Subscription Box Review – June 2015 Earrings

Pride Flag Shwings - Value $8.95

Snark Factory Earrings - Value $10

We received Shwings once before in a Loot Crate box. (They seem to be popular with celebrity kids).

These earrings were designed just for OwlCrate subscribers. The earrings say "Read More" "Diverse Books"

OwlCrate YA Book Subscription Box Review – June 2015 Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore Banner from Appraising Pages - Value $10?

This is another custom designed piece, and I can't find any other banners on their website, so I am completely guessing on the value. I really love this banner - and what great timing too!

Verdict: I'm really impressed with OwlCrate so far. (It's only my second month of this subscription). I think the book selections are great, (More Happy Than Not gets great reviews), and you can tell a lot of thought goes into the curation for the bookish extras and the theme.

What do you think of the June 2015 OwlCrate box?

Ooh I just LOVE this box! I’ve always loved YA (if anything it’s way better now than when I was a teen! And growing up as a gay teen, lgbt ya was relatively rare but each book u found was like an ultimate treasure and validation). Anyway obviously the theme excites me. Not really into Harry Potter but that banner rocks! And I totally would stick the show wing thingies on my chucks. And the earrings are soooo cool. Oh, and the book has been on my to read list for months now. I’m always nervous about signing up for a book box but this is literally the most perfect box I’ve ever seen. Actual book geek envy going on over here. Definitely going to look into this box but I missed such an incredible month!!!

I really like this box and have wanted this book since December so was super excited for that, I just don’t have pierced ears and can’t see myself wearing those on shoes so was a tad disappointed.

While I love owlcrate’s curation and book choices, I can’t stick with it. With all the book subs I have I feel like this gives me the least bang for my buck. But I don’t really care for “bookish extras” in my book subs, and this box feels like most of the value is in the extras.

I was actually hoping for a little more diversity in the diversity box!
