My Pretend Place Subscription Review - January 2015 Box

My Pretend Place is a quarterly subscription for kids who love to get into costume! I was so excited to learn about this subscription!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Even though my son's eyes were bulging at the sight of this giant box packed with fun, a good mother teaches her child to always open the card first!

In addition to a thank-you card, inside the envelope was a big magnet (on the right), plus some stickers and a handle to transform the packing box into a costume trunk! I absolutely love it when kids' subscription boxes re-use the box!

My Pretend Place Subscription Review - January 2015 Book

Astronaut Handbook by Meghan McCarthy - $16.99 ($13.01 on Amazon)

This month's theme is clearly astronauts! We haven't read this one yet, and I love that it gets great reviews on Amazon. Five stars!

My Pretend Place Subscription Review - January 2015 Stickers

Melissa & Doug Peel & Press Sticker by Number - Space Mission - $12.99

This looks like a lot of fun! The child matches the stickers to the corresponding numbers to create a work of art. It has a frame and everything! Plus I like Melissa & Doug; their toys are always pretty good quality at a reasonable price point.

My Pretend Place Subscription Review - January 2015 Astronaut Food

Astronaut Ice Cream - $3.99 each

I simply cannot believe I have lived to be the age I am (ahem) without ever trying astronaut ice cream. I hope the kids let me have a bite! How fun! And what a thoughtful addition to the box!

Astronaut Costume Pretend Play Set by Melissa and Doug - $29.99 ($25.49 on Amazon)

And now for the main event - the costume!

My Pretend Place Subscription Review - January 2015 Open

Here it is out of the plastic, and it's completely adorable! My son is going to have so much fun in this!

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $68, so I am very happy with the value. I haven't received anything yet, but on the months that you don't receive a package, they send emails with recipes, play ideas, and additional resources to get the most out of your play package. Depending on the quality and contents of the emails, that could add to the overall subscription value. The items are all cohesive and fit the theme very well. Outer space is also a favorite topic for my 6-year-old, so this was a huge win for us! The only small issue I have is that the manufacturer's suggested ages for this costume is ages 3-5. The subscription says it is appropriate for children ages 3-6. I would hate for some big six-year-old to receive this box and then not be able to wear the costume! Fortunately for us, my six-year-old is tiny and was able to wear the costume with no problem. Aside from that, I think this is a fantastic subscription box and a great idea!

What do you think of My Pretend Place?

My 3yr old daughter would LOVE this! The only thing that bothers me, is that the box for girls I’ve seen reviewed, only has a value of $54. Not to mention, most of the items I’ve seen on sale a lot of at tj maxx. I wish the value was just a tad higher. :/

I wish they had older age groups for this. I have some god-children who would LOVE this, but they are 7 and 10, and even if this would work for the younger one you can’t buy something for one without buying something for the other…

I totally feel ya, Rebecca. My 8-year-old is way more into costumes and acting. He was super jealous!

Maybe the 8 yr old could play mission control or an alien : )

We are getting ready to start the Magic School Bus space kit. I may purchase a few items listed here to add to the fun. I would order the kit for my 6 yo except I don’t know if the suit will fit him. It looks like so much fun and it’s a great idea that it is a Quarterly box.

This looks like a cool subscription! We love Melissa and Doug costumes and have a bunch already so I would be worried about getting duplicates. I wonder if the costume brand will be the same every month? These are great quality and they have tons of great options so it’d probably be good if they were. Thanks for the review.

Thanks Anthea! You can look in their shop to see everything they carry. I don’t know for sure, but I would assume they will keep adding to their collection of costumes.

I would have LOVED something like this when I was a kid. The curation seems top-notch, and I like the quarterly model for something like this because it allows kids to get plenty of use out of the items and seems easier on the wallet. Have to keep this one in my back pocket for a gift idea!

Demure

What a cool subscription. If I had children, this would be on my list.
