Wine Awesomeness Wines
When you sign up for a subscription to Wine Awesomeness, you'll select whether you want to receive all red wines, all white wines, or a mix of both. Apart from that, you're in the capable hands of Wine Awesomeness' team of wine experts who curate each monthly shipment. This subscription is all about adventure and discovery, and you'll receive wines picked around a different theme every month. Of all the different wine subscriptions I've tried over the years, Wine Awesomeness is the one that's surprised me the most. I've seen classic picks like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon alongside sparkling wines and lesser-known varietals from places like Portugal and South Africa. Wine Awesomeness even introduced me to new varietals like orange wine, a golden-hued vino that hails from Greece and Georgia.
Wine Awesomeness encourages subscribers to approach wine with an open mind. They don't guarantee that you'll love every single bottle you receive, but rather treat the subscription like an education in a box. Over time, you'll sample different types of wine from all over the world, which will develop and expand your palate. While this might seem a little intimidating at first, I can tell you I've received some surprising bottles, but overall I've been very happy with the wines.
While Wine Awesomeness won't refund your money if you're not in love with a bottle, they will look after you if you receive one that's damaged or corked. They also stand behind the value they provide. If you can recreate your box of wine for less, Wine Awesomeness will give you a year of free wine.
Digital Content + thebacklabel
If you'd like to learn more about the wines in your shipment, including tasting notes from the Wine Awesomeness team, feedback from other subscribers, and recipe pairings, you can access supplemental information digitally from your account.
Just log in to your account and navigate to the "Wine Cellar" page to learn more about the wines you've received in past shipments, or to repurchase bottles you love. You'll also receive a digital magazine via email each month.
For even more wine-related reading, you can explore thebacklabel, an online hub on Wine Awesomeness' website that provides oodles of additional content. You can explore articles spanning all kinds of wine-related topics: travel guides, wine-friendly recipes, winemaker profiles, interviews with master sommeliers, and lots more. As someone who loves reading about wine, I think thebacklabel is a fun little rabbit hole. I highly recommend checking out "The 10 Most Ridiculous Wine Descriptors" and "Cheers to That: The Origins of Toasting." Fun stuff.
My Wine Awesomeness Box
How to Sign Up
The signup process at Wine Awesomeness is extremely straightforward. When you join, you'll indicate whether you'd like to receive three bottles of red wine, three bottles of white wine, or a mix of both. There's no lengthy quiz, and you won't need to log in every month to select your bottles; once you've indicated your preference for white or red, buckle up and enjoy the ride.
It's worth noting: If you enjoy both reds and whites and want more than just three bottles, you can elect to receive six bottles of wine every month. (This will ensure you're sent all six of the bottles featured each month.)
Every box is curated around a different theme and shipments will continue until you skip, delay, or cancel.
My Box
I've personally subscribed to Wine Awesomeness on and off for years, but this box was sent to me at no cost for review. The theme is "Wine 101."
My wines arrived in an unmarked brown box, and they were carefully packed in a molded cardboard wine cradle. Affixed to the inside flap of my box was a sticker listing the wines included in this month's shipment. Additional information about the wines (including tasting notes and recipes) can be found online.
My Wines
Now for the big reveal! Here are the wines I received in this month's Wine Awesomeness box:
2019 Le Sauv - $17.00
I signed up for a mixed box, and I received one white and two reds. The bottle of white I received is a French 100% Sauvignon Blanc from a well-respected female winemaker:
The goal for Florencia Stoppini was to show off classic but modern French Sauv Blanc. She's become one of the most acclaimed winemakers in Southern France and she's mastered how to bring the Mediterranean climate to life in her wines. The aromas burst out with citrus and slowly take you down a green & grassy pathway. All those flavors breakdance across the taste buds with such style and smoothness.
Compared to a lot of the super-acidic Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand that I know and love, I found this French offering to be reserved, elegant, and subdued. There's a fair amount of lemon on the nose, but the flavor is smooth and more "tropical" than "citrusy." This bottle is kind of like the "girl next door" of wines; it's not an attention-grabber, but it's the kind of unassuming wine you can happily sip on the front porch while watching the world go by. It didn't change my life, but it was darn good.
2019 Italia Foto Wine Co. Sangiovese - Out of Stock
Sangiovese is the grape of Tuscany, but for some reason I rarely see it featured in wine of the month clubs. Here's a fun little description of this beloved Italian grape from Wine Awesomeness:
Thick-skinned but delicate, wild at heart but sensible, confident but needs reassurance from time to time, contradictions are her signature style. She’s comfortable being the star of her own movie and willing to let you come along for the ride — if you can keep up.
You have to admire Sangiovese. It asks for the best of what vintners and nature can give — and that’s why it’s the grape at the heart of Italy.
Whether it's being turned into a bottle of Chianti or featured in a trendy "Super Tuscan," I'm a big fan of Sangiovese, so I was thrilled to see this bottle in my box. I'm happy to report that it did not disappoint. For me, this wine was all tannins and red fruit. It was bone dry, but bursting with mixed berry flavor. Here's what Wine Awesomeness has to say about the flavor: "Adding a dash of really expensive vanilla extract to a cobbler loaded up with blueberries, red raspberries, and blackberries." In short, this wine from Wine Awesomeness was... well... AWESOME. I'm seriously considering buying more in the wine shop.
2019 Just Malbec Please - $18.00
Rounding out my box was a bottle of 100% Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. Did you notice that every bottle in this box was a pure expression of a single varietal? I think this is such a clever and subtle way to show subscribers what these grapes can taste like. Here's what Wine Awesomeness has to say about this bottle:
“What's in a name?” mused Shakespeare. What indeed, Will? In the case of this bottle, Just Malbec Please, we know exactly what we’re getting. And you best pay attention when an Argentinian winemaker makes this kind of declaration, because they don’t mess around when it comes to Malbec, the crown grape of Argentina. Gabriel Blanco and his family are focused on producing terroir-driven wines from Ugarteche, a sub-region of Mendoza, located at the base of the Andes. So expect intense, fruity flavors from this juice, but with an oh-so-smooth elegance.
Another winner. I always think of Malbec as being "jammy," and this wine was like jam in a bottle. It was big on berry flavor and just lip-smackingly good. Great on its own but could also easily hold up to BBQ or a heavy steak dinner.
My Verdict
I've tried (and reviewed) many wine subscriptions over the years, and Wine Awesomeness is one of my all-time favorites. I love that the bottles are picked by sommeliers who know their way around the world of wine, and I think it's so much fun to sit back and let them lead the way. They're not afraid to send out unusual or lesser-known wines, which I find refreshing. If you have an adventurous spirit and are willing to approach wine with an open mind, I wholeheartedly recommend giving Wine Awesomeness a try. Let's take one final look at this subscription, the wines I received, and how the value breaks down.
How much does it cost?
Wine Awesomeness costs $49 per shipment for 3 wines or $79.00 per shipment for six. (That's $16.33 per bottle or $13.17 per bottle, respectively.) While not the cheapest way to get wine, I think it's a great price for what you receive.
Is the wine good?
The wine is very good. All three of the wines I received in this shipment were great, and I'd say that's par for the course with Wine Awesomeness. Due to the element of discovery championed in this subscription, I expect to see the occasional bottle that's surprising, odd, or unfamiliar to me, but the wines are never bad. On the contrary, I think Wine Awesomeness consistently sends bottles that are high-quality and delicious.
Is it easy to skip or cancel?
Yes, you can change your delivery frequency, skip a shipment, delay your next order, and deactivate your membership online. Just sign in to your account and navigate to "my account" and then "manage membership."
