Pros:

  • Veestro meals are vegan and have options for nut-free, soy-free, gluten-free, kosher, and high-protein dishes.
  • Each frozen meal is completely prepared, so all you have to do is reheat and eat.
  • There are several recipes to choose from, including plant-based versions of popular foods like chicken nuggets, lasagna, and pepperoni pizza.
  • Veestro's Weight Loss plan includes breakfast selections to choose from.
  • You can choose your 10, 20, or 30 meals, plus you can set 1-week, 2-week, or 4-week recurring deliveries.
  • Veestro allows you to do one-time deliveries instead of subscriptions for an additional shipping fee.

Cons:

  • For freezer meals, the cost is a little high at $9–$12 per meal.
  • The company offers a low-calorie Weight Loss plan, which can feel out of touch with more current knowledge around Health at Every Size (HAES).
  • While many meals are full of flavor, some recipes were definitely lacking in taste and texture.

All About Veestro

Veestro is a plant-based meal delivery service that offers vegan, preservative-free frozen meals that are delivered right to your door. The company embraces healthy eating while understanding it’s hard to find time to prepare nutritious meals each day. It all began with brother and sister team Mark and Monica, who grew up in Costa Rica and enjoyed bountiful meals full of fresh veggies on the regular. After working in the corporate world, Mark noticed how hard it was to find time to continue eating healthy meals with a busy schedule. As such, the siblings set out to create plant-based, organic dishes made from plants to help customers enjoy sustainable, good-for-you-meals with no prep required.

How does Veestro work?

Veestro makes prepared frozen meals that are completely plant-based. You choose the number of meals (10, 20, or 30 meals for regular plans or 15 or 21 meals for the weight-loss plan) and frequency, plus you get to select which meals you receive for each delivery.

How do I store the meals?

Meals are delivered frozen and packed with dry ice. You can keep them in the freezer for 8 to 10 weeks or refrigerated for 3 to 5 days.

Are the meals allergy-friendly?

Veestro allows you to filter meals by dietary needs. All meals are vegan, but you can also filter for gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, kosher, high-protein, or low-calorie meals.

How do I cancel?

Cancel by visiting your account page or emailing [email protected]. You’ll receive a reminder email prior to your next shipment. Once you receive that reminder email, which sends depending on your billing cycle rather than on a specific day, you have 3 days to sign in to your account and cancel before you are charged.

What I Loved

There are many components to this subscription service that I loved.

No prep work

Veestro sells frozen, prepared meals, so I didn’t have to chop a single vegetable. I just heated up each dish according to the package, and my food was ready to eat in no time.

Clean ingredients

Despite these meals being frozen and pre-packaged, they aren’t your typical TV dinner. They are made with clean, recognizable ingredients, so I wasn’t worried about consuming too much sodium or saturated fat per meal.

Accommodating to special dietary needs

All the meals are vegan-friendly with additional options for those following nut-, soy-, and gluten-free diets as well as kosher and high-protein meals. As a vegetarian who gets a stomachache when I have a little too much dairy, knowing every meal was meat- and dairy-free was ideal, especially for my digestive system.

Room for Improvement

The company offers a “Weight Loss” subscription of 15 or 21 meals per delivery. This is meant to equal 1,200 calories a day at three meals a day. I’d prefer to see companies move away from a focus on weight and low-calorie diets.

What to Expect in a Veestro Delivery

Thinking of subscribing? Here's what to expect.

Price

The price per meal varies depending on how many meals you order and whether you are ordering a one-time box or a subscription.

For 10 subscription meals, it is $11.70 per meal. That totals out to $117 with free shipping. Without the 10% subscription discount, meals are $13 each for a total of $130 plus shipping.

For 20 subscription meals, it is $10.80 per meal for a total of $216. Without a subscription, each meal is $12 for a total of $240.

For 30 subscription meals, it is $9.90 per meal or total of $297. A one-time delivery is $330 plus shipping or $11 per meal.

The Weight Loss option is different, though. You can choose 15 or 21 meals (three meals a day for five or seven days). The five-day plan is $11.70 per meal, while the seven-day plan is $10.80 per meal. This option renews each week until you pause or cancel it and includes free shipping.

Delivery

Delivery is free for recurring subscriptions and Weight Loss orders, while one-time orders have a delivery charge of $9.99. Delivery times vary based on where you live and will take 1 to 4 days after shipment. I am located in Los Angeles, so delivery took just one day. Recurring deliveries are available every week, every two weeks, or every four weeks.

Products

Veestro offers frozen, pre-made meals that are entirely plant-based. That means there are no meat, dairy, or egg products. You can also choose nut-, soy-, and gluten-free dishes and kosher options. There are over 53 entrees and seven breakfast options to choose from.

Our Test Delivery in July 2021

We received one box with six meals for our tester box. This is not a full subscription box but did showcase the variety of meal options the company offers.

The Products

I received six frozen, prepared meals: Hawaiian Chili, Taco Bowl, Pasta Bolognese, Red Curry with Tofu, Country Fried Chick'n, and Enchilada Casserole.

How We Used It

Each meal has a couple different cooking options, with certain methods that are most recommended depending on the meal. I microwaved a few, baked one meal, and cooked a couple on a gas stovetop. Microwaving was the quickest method, but I wouldn’t recommend it for items like the fried chick’n or pasta.

What We Thought

Pasta Bolognese: I cooked this meal on the skillet for 10 to 12 minutes. There was a lot of sauce and few noodles, and these noodles broke into small pieces while I was cooking them. The sauce turned out a little watery but had good flavor. Despite being watery, it still had a meaty texture typical of bolognese sauce.

Enchilada Casserole: I needed a quick lunch, so I microwaved the enchilada casserole on a busy work day. It took 5 minutes to heat up. It includes plenty of healthy ingredients like tofu, peppers, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and shallots, plus delicious corn tortillas and vegan cheese. This dish is high in fiber and protein, and I was surprised to see a lower sodium amount compared to conventional microwave meals. I’m not a huge fan of microwaved food, but I was truly impressed with the flavor of this. It tasted very similar to a healthy vegan restaurant meal. It was slightly spicy. This was one of my favorite meals I tried, and I’d happily order this one again.

Red Curry: I cooked the red curry meal on the stove for 15 minutes. It was a little higher in sodium that some of the other meals I tried, but it also had high fiber content as well as high amounts of vitamins A and C. The flavor was good but a little heavier on the coconut than I’d like. The curry wasn’t spicy at all, and I wished there were more than just a few pieces of broccoli and cauliflower included. I cooked this one following the recommended method, but the rice still turned out very chewy.

Country-Fried Chick’n: There’s very few things I love more than a delicious plant-based crispy chicken, so I couldn’t wait to dig into this one. I baked the meal, which included two chick’n filets, mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables, plus a side of gravy that I heated up separately in a bowl of hot water. The potatoes and veggies alone were a little dry, but luckily the gravy saved the day. It was impressively meaty in flavor and smooth. The chick’n also tasted great. Sure, the texture wouldn’t fool a meat-lover, but I thought it was pretty tasty. I wouldn’t mind it being crispier though, so next time I might bake it for longer or let it broil for a few minutes.

Hawaiian Chili: This one had almost the entire dietary reference intake (DRI) of fiber and a whopping 24 grams of protein, which can be hard to find in vegan meals. It was also high in vitamin C and iron. I microwaved this one. Unfortunately, this meal was my least favorite of the bunch. The flavor was lacking. I mostly just tasted plain black beans and tomatoes.

Taco Bowl: I wasn’t sure if I’d like this one, because I’m not a huge fan of quinoa. But it turned out better than I expected! The impossible beef was delicious with a meaty, moist texture. I also loved the sauteed onions and peppers. There were only a few kernels of corn, so I would love to see more corn in this dish. I also enjoyed the green sauce, which was flavorful and mild.

Is Veestro Worth It?

These Veestro meals were incredibly handy for days that I just didn’t have time to cook lunch or dinner. The clean ingredients mean that I can cook a frozen meal and not feel so sluggish after eating it. The cost is a little high, so it’s not something I would purchase every week or even every month. But for months that I expect to be especially busy, I’d happily order Veestro to ensure I’m getting healthier meals that I don’t have to spend any time preparing. Plus, I just have to have more of that enchilada casserole and country fried chick’n!
