Year in Review: Peet's Coffee

Peet's Coffee in 2021

A look back at this past year and our hopes for 2022.

Peet's Coffee has been a part of my life for many years now. I used to live around the corner from one of their shops, and I have fond memories of long days working from a back corner table while sipping giant iced coffees. After I moved and no longer had Peet's nearby, I decided to give their subscription a try. I reviewed Peet's a couple of times in 2021, and I thought it might be nice to take a look back at what this subscription delivered in 2021, explore the different subscription options, peek at the new product releases, and see what Peet's Coffee did right this past year. Is there anything they could do better in 2022? Let's explore!

Peet's Coffee Subscriptions in 2021

Peet's Coffee kicked off 2021 with three different subscription options, but there are now four subscriptions to choose from. Each one offers a slightly different subscription journey, but they all have a few things in common. All four send coffee that's roasted to order, and the beans are less expensive than you'd pay in the retail shop. You can choose your delivery frequency and grind preference, and the beans will be shipped to your door. Let's take a look at the different subscription options that are available and stack them up to see what each one has to offer.

Carbon Neutral Subscription

New in 2021, the Carbon Neutral Subscription allows subscribers a way to offset the carbon emissions of a coffee subscription. Each delivery supports the sponsorship of CO2 absorbing mangrove trees. For every two pounds of coffee delivered, Peet's will sponsor three mangrove trees, and you'll even receive the actual coordinates of those trees with your shipment! Every shipment features a new coffee for you to explore, and you can feel good drinking it knowing that you're supporting sustainable environmental practices. This subscription starts at $19.95 per month.

Small Batch Series

The Small Batch Series is Peet's Coffee's most popular subscription, and it features coffees that aren't widely available in Peet's Coffee's retail stores. Subscribers to the Small Batch Series can expect to receive a new small batch coffee or microlot release; these coffees are exceptional, but there's just not a enough for a wide-release. This subscription starts at $20.95.

Single Origin Series

With the Single Origin Series, you can travel the globe without leaving your kitchen. Each shipment features a new coffee from a specific growing region. No blends here! Each release represents the flavors and nuance of a particular coffee growing locale. This subscription starts at $18.95.

Signature Blend Series

The final subscription available from Peet's Coffee is the Signature Blend Series. This subscription features coffees that have been blended to showcase the exceptional flavors and complexities that coffee has to offer. If you like smooth coffees that have been blended to perfection, this is the subscription for you. The Signature Blend Series starts at $17.95 per month.

What Peet's Coffee Got Right in 2021

Freshness

Freshly roasted coffee beans can mean the difference between big bold flavors and coffee that's just meh, and when it comes to freshness, Peet's Coffee got it right in 2021. When you browse the coffees available on Peet's website, you'll see up front which day of the week products are roasted, and when you sign up for a subscription, products are roasted to order. Every coffee you receive in your Peet's subscription is shipped out the same day it's roasted. You can't get any fresher than that!

Customization

Whether you prefer whole bean coffee or want it pre-ground and ready for a drip maker, percolator, or French press, Peet's can hook you up. A subscription to Peet's can also be customized to ship at a frequency of your choosing. You can't hand-pick the beans you receive in each shipment, but all in all, Peet's Coffee offered excellent customization in 2021. With four different subscription to choose from and a number of different ways to tweak shipments to make sure they're right for you, Peet's get our thumbs up for customization.

Ethical Sourcing

Peet's arabica beans are sourced responsibly and ethically, and only coffee beans from the top 1% of farmers make the cut. Commitment to supply chain transparency is important to Peet's, and the company seeks out long term partnerships that are beneficial to both sides. Looking at all the things that Peet's Coffee did well in 2021, this stands out.

Peet's Coffee Featured Coffees in 2021

There are a lot of different coffees available from Peet's Coffee, and if you're looking to place a one-time order for some freshly roasted coffee, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the wide selection. You could go for one of the classics, like French Roast, Italian Roast, or Major Dickason's Blend, but if you want to try something special, let's take a look at some of the special releases that stood out in 2021.

  • Organic Alameda Blend, a medium roast with caramel and floral notes, was new to the market in 2021.
  • Yosemite Dos Sierras Organic coffee is a coffee with a mission. For each bag of coffee sold, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Yosemite National Conservancy, a non-profit that supports the preservation of Yosemite National Park.
  • Jamaica Blue Mountain, an elegant old world coffee, and Red Mocha Haraaz, a rich brew with notes of wine and cocoa, are both high-end reserve releases that are only available for a limited time. These exceptions coffees (with price tags to match!) are only available until 12/22/21 or until supplies last. Not a bad way to see out 2021!
  • Looking for something festive? Check out Peet's Holiday BlendJust like the holidays themselves, this coffee won't be around forever. Get it while you can before it leaves the shelves on 1/3/22. Peet's works with nonprofit La Cocina, and for each bag of Holiday Blend sold, they'll donate $1.

Some of the biggest news that Peet's dropped in 2021 was that they're adding K-Cups to the menu! You can now purchase K-Cups for at-home brewing from Peet's Coffee's online store. K-Cups are available in the following flavors: Hazelnut Mocha K-Cup Pods, Vanilla Cinnamon K-Cup Pods, and Caramel Brûlée K-Cup Pods.

Peet's Holiday Gifting in 2021

2021's not over yet, and if you'd like to round out the year by gifting your nearest and dearest some Peet's Coffee, there are several options that are perfectly designed for gifting. In addition to a subscription (which always makes a great gift), the following gift options are available:

  • See's Candies Chocolate Coffee Beans-  See's Candy joined forces in 2021 with Guittard Chocolate and Peet's Coffee to release some very special chocolate covered coffee beans. If you're looking for a gift for a chocoholic/ coffeeholic, this might be just the right things.
  • Gift Sets -Peet's also released a variety of gift options in 2021. These sets feature a variety of coffee and tea. Know someone who can't get enough Peet's Coffee (or who you think might enjoy sampling a selection of products)? These sets are a great way to see what Peet's has to offer in 2021.

What I Would Like to See in 2022

Peet's Coffee is best known for their dark and medium roast coffee, and this is where they tend to shine. In 2022, Id love to see more options on the lighter end of the roast scale, and a greater commitment to new lightly roasted releases.

I'd also love to see a subscription designed for decaf coffee drinkers come out in 2022. While there's a good selection of decaf coffees available in Peet's online store, there isn't currently a subscription available to those who prefer decaf.

Finally, while subscriptions might occasionally feature espresso beans, there isn't currently a subscription designed exclusively for espresso. As someone who has started drinking more espresso recently, I'd love to see an espresso subscription hit the market in 2022.
