Kitsch vs Slip: Which Pillowcase is Best for Beauty Sleep

While I like to pamper myself, I am also a bit of a couch potato who craves convenience and function over luxury, so, I never before considered the material of my pillowcases. But recently, I had the opportunity to try Kitsch satin pillowcases and Slip silk pillowcases. Here’s the 411.

If you’re looking for vegan and cruelty-free…Kitsch

One reason why I prefer Kitsch and would recommend it over Slip is the fact that Slip pillowcases are made from mulberry silk, which (while eco-friendly), is not vegan or cruelty-free. Kitsch pillowcases are vegan and cruelty-free. Causing no harm to any other sentient beings is something that is very important to me and most of the people in my life. Switching to vegan and cruelty-free self-care products such as pillowcases is such an easy, unobtrusive step that we can all take on the path to making this world a better place.

If you’re looking for affordable…Kitsch

Let’s chat about the most important info: the price. Silk pillowcases, such as those from Slip, start at around $100, and they’re not meant to last you more than a year or so. Satin has a very similar look and feel to silk. I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between a Kitsch pillowcase and a Slip pillowcase. They both felt luxurious and comfortable to sleep on, but Kitsch is coming in for the win at a much more reasonable $19 per pillowcase. That is more my speed, especially because (now, don’t judge me) I sleep with six different pillows on my bed… And since I toss and turn so much, my head and face definitely end up on all six of them at least once during the night.

If you’re looking for smooth skin and hair…it’s a tie!

One thing I learned is that friction (not the fun kind) can wreak havoc on your hair and skin. Basically, every time you toss and turn, your skin and hair get caught on the material of non-silk/non-satin pillowcases. That motion is what leads to knotting, frizz, fine lines, and (dun-dun-dun) wrinkles. Now, I toss and turn a LOT, and I have plans of looking like Angela Bassett when I’m in my 80s. So, with my new knowledge, I realized I had to get my hands on some new pillowcases, STAT. I can’t say that I’ve been able to notice any difference in fine lines or wrinkles, but I definitely don’t experience any bedhead, flyaways, or pillow crease imprints anymore, which is a big plus especially when waking up for an 8 a.m. Zoom.

If you’re looking to wake up with a glow…It’s a tie!

In case you didn’t know, satin and silk pillowcases, unlike cotton, do not absorb moisture. They stay cool and dry all through your slumber, which helps your skin and hair stay hydrated. I noticed a huge difference in my skin when using both Kitsch and Slip pillowcases. In the morning, my face looked less puffy and was much more buoyant to the touch.

If you’re looking for easier maintenance…Kitsch

The one downside to this radical change in my sleep vehicle is that satin and silk pillowcases need delicate care. I wash these silk and satin pillowcases with a very gentle detergent and in a ‘delicates’ bag, which should help increase their lifespan. Since they’re right up against my face, I do try my best to change my satin or silk pillowcases every time I wash my hair to prevent me from rolling around in old hair, skin, oil, and bacteria. Pro tip: hang-dry those pillowcases. It may take a bit of patience, but it’ll be worth it in the long run. While both materials need a bit more care, I found that the silk pillowcase gets insanely wrinkled in the wash, whereas the Kitsch one is wrinkle-free. Ain’t nobody got time to iron a pillowcase.

The Ultimate Winner…Kitsch

While the Slip pillowcase is very nice, I definitely prefer the Kitsch pillowcases, primarily because of how accessible and affordable they are and the fact that they’re vegan and cruelty-free. We all deserve beauty sleep, regardless of the amount of disposable income we have to splurge on basic necessities.
