HelloFresh - 2021 in Review

HelloFresh in 2021

A look back at this past year and our hopes for 2022.

We review a lot of meal kits here on My Subscription Addiction, but HelloFresh is one of the most popular. In 2021, HelloFresh was voted by readers as the best overall meal kit subscription box on our list of Best Meal Subscription Boxes, and I have to agree. I'm also a big fan! I ate my way through a number of HelloFresh boxes in 2021, and so did you. Readers rated and reviewed HelloFresh on our brand page, and three critical eaters even volunteered to participate in a HelloFresh community reviewI thought it might be fun to take a look back at what this subscription delivered in 2021, explore the different subscription options, review the big announcements, and see what HelloFresh did right this past year. Is there anything they could do better in 2022? Let's explore!

HelloFresh Subscriptions in 2021

HelloFresh offers a variety of different subscription plans, and subscribers are able to choose from six different options to suit a variety of diets and lifestyles. Each one offers a slightly different subscription journey, but they all have a few things in common. All subscribers receive fresh ingredients and chef-designed recipes, and all of the meals are ready in about 20 minutes or less. Let's take a peek at the different plans:

Meat & Veggie

This plan allows subscribers to choose anything from the full menu of over 27+ meals each week. For those without dietary restrictions, this wide selection will include a wide variety of different dishes. Expect vegetarian dishes, pescatarian dishes, and meat dishes that are inspired by global fare, comfort classics, and family friendly favorites.

Veggie

If you avoid meats, the Veggie plan is for you. Every week, your menu will be filtered to only show meals that are vegetarian-friendly. Here are some examples of dishes that appeared on the Veggie plan in 2021:

  • Pasta Primavera with Lemon Parm Sauce, Bell Pepper, Zucchini & Peas
  • Shawarma Chickpea Couscous Bowls with Roasted Veggies, Pickled Onion & Harissa Yogurt Sauce
  • BBQ Pineapple Flatbreads with Caramelized & Pickled Onions

Family Friendly

Recipes on the family friendly plan are kid-tested and quick to make. They're designed for picky eaters with not-so-adventurous palates, and they're on the table quickly. Here are some examples of Family Friendly dishes that popped up on the HelloFresh menu in 2021:

  • Homestyle Chicken & Biscuit Pot Pie with Pillsbury™️ Buttermilk Southern Homestyle Biscuits, Carrots & Celery
  • Lone Star Poblano Mac & Cheese with a Crispy Panko Topping
  • Firecracker Meatballs with Roasted Green Beans & Jasmine Rice

Calorie Smart

Calorie Smart recipes are dietician-approved and contain fewer than 650 calories each. If you're looking for recipes that are lower in calories but still big on flavor, this might be the plan for you. Here are some examples of Calorie Smart dishes that made it onto the HelloFresh menu in 2021:

  • Sweet As Honey Dijon Chicken with Lemony Green Beans & Cheesy Cauliflower "Rice"
  • Sun-Dried Tomato Spaghetti with Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Fresh Herbs, Almonds, and Parmesan
  • Middle Eastern Chickpea Bowls with Spiced Basmati Rice & Garlicky White Sauce

Quick & Easy

If you're looking for recipes that will help you cut down on prep, cooking time, and cleanup, check out HelloFresh's Quick & Easy plan. Here are a few Quick & Easy meals that made it onto the HelloFresh menu in 2021:

  • Chicken Sausage Rigatoni in a Creamy Pink Sauce with Bell Pepper & Parmesan
  • Sheet Pan Walnut-Crusted Salmon with a Roasted Veggie Jumble & Lemon Crème Fraîche
  • One-Pan Moroccan Chicken & Couscous with Pistachios & Lemon Garlic Crema

Pescatarian

The final plan available to HelloFresh subscribers in 2021 was the Pescatarian plan. For those who want to avoid meats but still eat fish and seafood, the Pescatarian plan is crafted with you in mind! Here are some of the Pescatarian dishes HelloFresh served up in 2021:

  • Chimichurri Barramundi with Lemony Carrots & Garlic Couscous
  • Szechuan Shrimp Ramen Stir-Fry with Carrot, Scallion & Peanuts
  • Ricotta Tomato Stuffed Ravioli & Shrimp with Toasted Panko, Lemony Squash & Parsley

What HelloFresh Got Right in 2021

Large Menu

If you're the type of diner who enjoys lots and lots of different recipes to choose from, you'll be hard pressed to find a menu larger than HelloFresh's. Every week, HelloFresh has 27+ recipes to choose from; that's a ton of options! Depending on which plan you choose, the selection may be filtered to cut out options that will not work for your diet, but subscribers on the Meat & Veggie plan can choose from all of the available options. I love the wide variety of dishes HelloFresh offered each week in 2021!

Simple & Delicious Recipes

HelloFresh is designed for cooks of all ability levels, and in 2021 I was impressed with the simple recipes that still delivered big flavor. Sometimes simple recipes taste simple, but I didn't find that to be the case with HelloFresh's recipes in 2021; dishes struck a great balance of being quick and easy to prepare while still tasting like they were designed by the pros. The recipes were consistently written well and easy to follow, and the dishes were creative and fun. Most would be right at home on the menu of a neighborhood restaurant.

Variety of Plans

With six different plans to suit vegetarians, pescatarians, families, and more, there's a plan to fit most diets and lifestyles. In 2021, most people looking for a meal kit would be able to find a suitable option with HelloFresh.

HelloFresh Market 2021

For years, HelloFresh has been a popular destination for meal kit subscribers, but in 2021, HelloFresh expanded their business model to offer additional items for subscribers. In addition to meal kits, subscribers can now add breakfast items, desserts, sides, and heat-and-eat meals, as well as grocery staples like fresh produce, spices, snacks, proteins, and coffee onto their weekly order.

Have you ever wanted to add an additional side dish to one of your meal kit selections? The HelloFresh Market now offers the option to pick up a side of cheesy broccoli or a salad to pad out recipes that might be a little on the lighter side. Just like HelloFresh’s meal kits, many of the sides include all the fresh ingredients you need to make the dish yourself at home and an easy recipe to help ensure your food comes out just right. You can also pick up additional dinner options or snag easy meal solutions for other meals. From Annie’s bake-at-home cinnamon rolls to New England clam chowder, pizza, mac & cheese, and desserts, there are plenty of additional items and bundles available to see you all the way from morning through to that midnight snack. I think this is a great addition to the HelloFresh subscriber experience!

MSA's Community Response to HelloFresh in 2021

Several community members dropped into the HelloFresh brand page to leave a review of this meal kit delivery service in 2021. Here's what Yiota had to say about HelloFresh:

"I've had this for years, I got a coupon in a fabfitfun subscription which I cancelled over three years ago. Some of the recipes have become such staples that we have kept the recipes for times we don't get them. We get the 2 person 3 meals a week for 3 adults and sometimes buy extra meat at the grocery store depending on what we get. 4 person is too much food for 3, though we'll get that if we have guests. Sometimes they forget items and sometimes the quality of the vegetables is terrible, but they have decent customer service. We frequently pause the subscription for a week or so when on vacation. They switch up which sour cream they use one of which has carrageenan which my husband is really sensitive to and one which doesn't so we tend to keep the good kind in house. I have no idea where they get their times from, but it has never once taken us less than 30 minutes to get any meal prepped and that's even with two people."

Amy gifted a HelloFresh subscription to her parents in 2021, and reports that they're big fans:

"I got HelloFresh for my parents, who live in a rural area, for Christmas and they love it so much, they get it every week now! It allows them to try new and different dishes and also keeps them safe by limiting how many trips they make to the grocery store. They raved about it so much, I decided to try it for myself and I love it too! It keeps me out of the grocery store where I always tend to overbuy and the box for 2 is enough for dinners for me for the whole week! I really enjoy all the options, no-waste ingredients and it's so easy to skip weeks. My mother had to contact customer service for something and they were very helpful!"

-Amy R. Feb 6, 2021

Unfortunately, not all reviews were positive. Anne Kirby had some issues with ingredients arriving in good condition in 2021:

"So I love the recipes which is why it gets 2 stars we have been getting HelloFresh for a while. We had to stop getting chicken recipes because every single time its spoiled. Even with the ice packs still frozen solid. Sometimes they send us the wrong meat or ingredients entirely. Sometimes the meat is busted when we get it a lot of times we skip a week because there are no recipes that sound interesting."

Looking Forward to 2022

HelloFresh did a lot right in 2021, but there are a few things they could improve in 2022. First, let's take a look back at some of the high notes. In 2021, HelloFresh published a huge menu every week, offered a wide variety of plans, crafted simple recipes, served up delicious fare, and revealed a brand new market experience for subscribers. I hope to see all of these things continue into 2022 and beyond.

So where could HelloFresh improve? In 2022, I'd like to see even more options introduced to support an even wider variety of diets. Currently, those on a keto, gluten-free, vegan, or paleo diet might struggle to find enough options on the HelloFresh menu. I'd like to see HelloFresh introduce plans that cater more specifically to these diets.

I'd also love to see HelloFresh introduce additional customization options in 2022. It would be great to be able to swap proteins in recipes, and it would offer additional options for vegetarians if meats could be swapped for tofu, seitan, or another meat substitute.

I just got my first bundle Saturday. The shipping is $9.99 and my meals were all $8.99 each. I cooked one Saturday and two on Sunday. All of them and all were great. I never know how long the meat can stay in the packages? I feel like I can’t wait four days to cook one meal a day. Do you know about that Lindsey?

Thanks for the heads up on price, Jody! I’ve updated the post.

Regarding your question about meat, it depends. I usually go by what’s recommended by the brand, but my personal guideline is to cook shellfish and fish within 3 days of arrival and chicken and beef within 5. My absolute cutoff is 7 days, but if I know it might be that long, I’ll usually freeze the meat to make sure it remains as fresh as possible.

I hope that helps!
