The 15 Best Wine Subscription Boxes – 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

It doesn't matter if you're a wine expert or are still unsure about the difference between a syrah and a zinfandel--everyone loves a good glass of wine. Wine subscription boxes or wine clubs can do something more than deliver wine to your home;  they can give you an opportunity to develop your palate, find new favorites, and pair your drinks like a true connoisseur. They also make for amazing gifts, whether as a one-time box or a gift that keeps on giving.

Every year, we ask our readers to share their top recommended subscriptions of all types. Then we ask our experts to share what they know about each subscription to make it easy for you to know which subscription is right for you. Below, you’ll find our insights for shopping wine subscription boxes and see readers’ top choices for your favorite adult drink.

What To Look For When Shopping Wine Subscriptions

Joining a monthly wine subscription opens up exciting new experiences. When shopping for wine subscriptions, you'll want to make sure that, above all, you're happy with the selection you're getting. You’ll sample exclusive vintages and varietals without overpaying, and whether you’re an expert or an amateur, you’ll love sampling a wider range of wines than you’d find at your local store.
We’ve got a few basic tips for choosing a wine subscription that works for you:

  • Look for Subscriptions That Offer Variety. Even if you’re a new wine drinker, having a lot of choices can help you learn what you like. Customization will help you hone in one the blends you love, so you can get the best value from your subscription.
  • Think about how much wine you’ll drink. If you’re someone who enjoys wine with meals, you may be able to get through a bottle in a few days. However, if you only want to taste different wines, you might prefer a subscription that only gives out trial sizes.
  • Know what will happen if you don’t like an individual wine. While you may have to keep a bottle that you don’t really care for, some wine subscriptions will offer you a replacement bottle or a refund. In most cases, you’ll be able to rate the wine so you don’t get more like it.

The Most Popular Wine Subscription Boxes

Read on for our reader’s recommendations for the best wine subscription boxes for yourself or your friends. If we missed anything, drop us a comment. If you’ve tried one of these services, be sure to leave a quick review (even if you had a poor experience — your review can help other readers avoid subscription remorse).

1. Winc

The best subscription overall

Image from our review.

What’s In This Wine Subscription Box

Winc is one of the best wine subscription boxes according to our readers. Their signup process is simple and straightforward. But that doesn’t mean that you’re getting the same wines as everyone else; Winc offers an exceptional level of curation so you’ll only buy bottles that you actually love.
To get started, you’ll fill out a quick survey indicating your preferences for different types of wine. The questions are simple, even for newcomers — do you like salty foods? How do you feel about citrus flavors? How do you like your coffee? That will give Winc’s algorithm and idea of what your wine preferences may be.

When the survey is done, Winc suggests unique, affordable wines designed to please your palate. Each month, you’ll get four full-size bottles. Our readers love that there is enough to sample the bottles with friends or with meals. If you’re not sure about a certain recommendation, you don’t have to take it; you can easily make changes to your shipment.

Winc offers four choices at a price point that is more affordable than some other subscriptions on this list (they start at $59.95/month). If you’re looking for an excellent wine subscription, this is the right place to start.

Who's This Box For?

Pretty much everyone no matter your taste preferences. Winc makes wine fun, and its selection is carefully curated to match the subscriber’s tastes. Some serious wine lovers might prefer shopping at more expensive clubs, but Winc is ideal for everyone else.

Pros

  • Survey lets the brand know what you like
  • Four bottles a month

Cons

  • If you're a real connoiseur, you may prefer choosing your own higher-end blends

What Readers Say:

"Love love love this box! My favorite way to discover new wines. I didn't like one of them & their customer service was great, highly recommend." - Eli

The best subscription for exploring small vineyards

wine cellars wines

What’s In This Wine Subscription Box

Bright Cellars is a wine subscription that uses a mix of technology and wine experts to send you picks you’ll love. When you sign up, you’ll take a brief quiz that focuses on 18 “preference attributes” (the algorithm was developed by two MIT grads.) As a result, you’ll get a detailed palate profile to help pick the right wines for you.

Of course, no tech is perfect, so that’s where the people come in. Bright Cellars have human wine curators that sample wines to make sure they fit the bill. Our readers love that if you get a bottle you don’t like, your Bright Cellars Wine Concierge will give you a free replacement.

Another thing our readers love about Bright Cellars is that you can find a range of wines that may not be available to you locally. They focus on hard-to-find wines from small vineyards around the world, including Portugal, South America, Italy and Spain. Can’t get enough of a wine Bright Cellars sent? You can shop their online store for individual bottles.
For about $20 per bottle (you get four), it’s another remarkably affordable wine subscription box. Even better, you can earn exclusive rewards if you rate wines regularly (this will also help your monthly curation become better too).

Wine enthusiasts (and amateurs) looking for hidden gems.

Pros

  • You pay about $20 per bottle each month
  • Focuses on small vineyards
  • Offers free replacement for wines you don't like

The best subscription for women (with bonus items)

Image from our review.

What’s In This Wine Subscription Box

Vine Oh! knows loving wine is about more than enjoying a full-bodied red on a chilly evening (though that sounds pretty fantastic). Wine helps you celebrate those little moments in life, and this quarterly subscription gives you something to celebrate--they offer lots of extras in addition to your bottles.

In addition to two bottles of premium wine, you’ll receive sweets, accessories, jewelry, and/or self-care goods. How to Get The Most Out of Your Wine Subscription Once You’ve Picked

Once you’ve picked out the right box for you, follow our steps to help make sure you make the most of your new subscription:

  • Check your shipment. Make sure that the bottles have no cracks and that they’re what you expected to receive, whether you chose them yourself or the brand picked them for you. If you don’t like something, contact the brand right away.
  • Taste the wines. Obviously you’re going to sip what you’ve been sent, but when you’re tasting, ask yourself if you feel the price you paid was worth the wines you’re sampling.
  • Rate wines. Pay attention to what you’re tasting. Is a wine too sweet? Just sweet enough? Head to your wine subscription’s site and rate the wines you’ve gotten so that you can get a curation better suited for your palate when your next box arrives.

Factors We Considered When Reviewing These Wine Subscriptions

This list features our fellow subscription fanatics’ top choices, and we can confidently recommend the subscriptions above since we’ve researched and reviewed them all. Factors we considered when reviewing these subscriptions include:

  • Variety: The whole point of joining a monthly wine subscription is to experience a variety of brands and bottles, right? Our readers chose wine services that featured rare vintages, international picks, and other essentials that you probably won’t find at your local retailer.
  • Quality: By “quality,” we’re referring mainly to the quality of the company’s service — many of us aren’t wine connoisseurs, but we sure know how to tell if we’re being treated right by customer care. Many of the wine subscriptions above offer money-back guarantees or other terms to protect customers. If your wine arrives damaged or undrinkable, you can contact them for a replacement. Some of these subscriptions will also replace wines if they’re simply below your expectations; however, check their terms and conditions before ordering.
  • Cost & Value: Where possible, we’ve noted whether the wine services offer full bottles, half bottles, or single servings. We looked at all of the expenses that go into each subscription — shipping charges, membership fees, and so on — to choose subscriptions that offer a decent overall value.

Does anyone have suggestions for those wine boxes that are semi-bulk, like 13~ or so variety bottles? I know Hello Fresh or one of the food boxes used to include coupons for these types of wine variety packs. Thanks.

Hi Tessa,
I am a member of Bright Cellars. In addition to the 4 bottles delivered monthly you frequently receive offers for cases ranging from $120-180. I have purchased a “damaged label” case for quite a steal and the bottles were pristine.

A wine box would be a lot of fun and many of these look amazing, but I live in Utah where the theocracy doesn’t allow them.
