The school year is finally over and summer can begin. Which means I need to refresh my summer wardrobe. My school clothes are optimized for looking professional in the climate controlled building, while my summer clothes are ligher weight and more casual (and more comfortable), basically meant for being outside.
Stitch Fix is an online personal styling service and one of the most popular women's fashion subscriptions. You tell them all about your style and size preferences through their very specific style quiz, and then they send you a package of carefully selected stylish goodies to try on at home. The styling fee is $20 a month for your stylist, but that fee goes towards any items you choose to keep.

Style Preferences - Vision AI Setup
This was my 4th Stitch Fix order in the last year, so I thought I knew what to expect. My previous box had impressed me with the AI Style Assistant — it asked exactly the right questions and helped me write a much more detailed, specific note to my stylist than I ever would have on my own. This time, Stitch Fix had something new for me to try: Vision AI.
I was not expecting to be a fan of Vision AI. I'm generally wary of AI tools, and the "see how this looks on you" feature on most shopping platforms has always felt more gimmicky than useful. But I gave it a shot, and it turned out to be easy, fun, and genuinely helpful for visualizing how items would actually look on my figure.
I set it up before even placing my order. I uploaded a headshot and a full-body photo, and within a few minutes had a virtual version of me wearing a new outfit. It wasn't perfect, but Stitch Fix already has all my sizing information on file, and I was able to give feedback on pretty much everything — the outfit and style, how accurate the face looked, the background scene, and the body height, weight, and shape. The face and hair came out looking like a mashup of me and a catalogue model, but then again, I'm a 5'4", size medium brunette with shoulder-length wavy hair. Apparently I look very much like an average middle-aged American white woman.
Each image had outfit component thumbnails along the bottom with links to the item listings, which I found really useful for seeing the width and length of tops, how pieces could be styled and layered, and the length and cut of pants.
Ordering
Placing my order was pretty straightforward. A calendar pops up to pick a delivery date — as soon as 8 days out — with the option to set up a recurring Fix, which I declined.
I also used the option to customize the number of items in my box, anywhere from 5 to 8. I went with the maximum to give myself the most options. Then I reviewed my style preferences, updated what I did and didn't want (I never get accessories), and confirmed my sizing was still accurate.
The last step was using the AI Style Assistant to write my note to the stylist. "Summer travel outfits" fit what I was looking for exactly. A few follow-up questions later and we'd landed on a request for flowy tops and easy-care pants with some color preferences. The questions I was asked were mainly multiple choice and the AI Style Assistant did a good job of putting my answers into a logical summary. I also added a specific ask for a lightweight short-sleeve cardigan to layer over sleeveless dresses.
Vision AI, Continued
I came back to the app later that same day and found outfit suggestions waiting for me on the Freestyle page. They now had a "see it on me" option in the corner, which took just about a minute to generate an image of me in the outfit. These were genuinely helpful for seeing how items fit and worked together before committing to anything.
I really didn't think I'd become such a convert to Vision AI, but it's a great addition to Stitch Fix and has made me a lot more confident about purchasing individual items through Freestyle.
Two days after ordering, I got a notification and an email letting me know my preview was ready.
There were 9 items in my preview, including 6 short-sleeve flowy blouses. My first instinct was to decline only the 2-pack of solid sleeveless tops, which would have put my Fix at exactly 8 items. I reconsidered though — I wanted some surprises in my box — so I also declined 2 tops that were cute but not colors I'd realistically reach for.
That left me with one pair of wide-leg cropped navy pants, 4 tops, and one dress confirmed, plus 2 extra items for my stylist to choose. The dress was one I already own and love in black, just in a different color.
First Impressions
My box arrived 2 days early, which was a nice surprise.
As always, items were neatly folded, compactly packaged, and came with a note from my stylist including item details and pricing. Also included was a return bag and prepaid return label.
My two stylist picks were an open-knot cropped cardigan I had actually spotted in several of my Vision AI outfit suggestions, and a beautiful teal green short-sleeve blouse. I feel like my stylist knows my taste at this point — nothing in the box was a shock.
What’s Inside
Studio Blue - Boa Elasticated Utility Soft Wide Leg – Retail Value $78
Size: M | Color: Navy
The pants are a cotton blend, nice neutral navy, have an elastic waist, and fit perfectly. Of course I kept them, and they will be great pants for when I return to work in August.
Les Serein - Jay Blouse – Retail Value $45
Size: M | Color: Teal Green
This was one of the two items that my stylist chose for me. It was spot on. It's light weight and perfect for summer. It has a suble pattern that isn't shown in the app, but it adds a nice bit of texture.
Nine Britton - Runa Blouse – Retail Value $45
Size: M | Color: White
This is not just a simple white shirt. It has pleats and ruffles, but they are so sublte. It is a basic shirt, but elevated.
Les Serein - Dream V Neck Blouse – Retail Value $42
Size: M | Color: Magenta
This is the perfect summer shirt. It's a color that suits me and is an unfussy but flattering cut. And being polyester, it can be scrunched into a bag and not show a single wrinkle.
Cosmic Blue Love - Cathy Side Slit Button Down Shirt – Retail Value $69
Size: M | Color: Blue
This blouse was the most lightweight fabric I have ever seen, structured, yet airy, but way too big. I love it so much that I was able to find a way to style and keep it, by tying the front to lose some of the length and have more shape.
FORTUNE + IVY - Dallas Mixed Material Shirt – Retail Value $45
Size: M | Color: Black
The biggest surprise was that I sent back this shirt! I never thought I would have too many black tops, but this was a bit heavy compared to the others, and not a good option for travel to a hot humid destination.
Market & Spruce - Ravyn Dress – Retail Value $55
Size: M | Color: Red
This pocketed tank dress fit perfectly, I knew it would as I own the same one in black and had worn it that week. However, I don't see myself wearing a casual red dress, so it went back. I really wanted to keep it, but the red just wasn't the right red for me.
Market & Spruce - Crochet SS Cardigan – Retail Value $59
Size: M | Color: Blue
The sweater went back. I liked the look in the Vision AI images, but in real file it was huge on me. I think it was meant to be oversized, but I definitely needed to size down, which would still give me a loose look.
Purchase and Returns
Once I made my decisions, giving feedback was simple — both on why I was returning what I was sending back, and what I liked about what I kept. I ended up keeping 5 of 8 items. I sent back the black top, the red dress, and the blue sweater, but all for reasons that I wouldn't have known if I hadn't tried them on. None of them were bad choices, it was just that there is only so much you can tell about an item from looking at it on a screen, even if it is on your personal avatar.
Since I was keeping at least 5 items, I got 25% off my total. That brought 4 blouses and 1 pair of pants from $279 down to $209. The returns went into the bag with the provided label and straight into the outgoing mail.
Takeaways
Overall, this was a strong box. My stylist clearly paid attention to what I asked for, and the combination of the AI Style Assistant for ordering and Vision AI for browsing Freestyle has genuinely changed how I interact with Stitch Fix. I went in skeptical about Vision AI and came out a fan — it adds a level of confidence to the whole process that I didn't know I was missing.
