Opening The Box
Welcome back to the UNDISCOVERED Artisan Box, where beautiful, intentional handmade goods arrive straight from their country of origin. The Winter boxes are gift wrapped with a shiny bow, and would be glorious to hand over to someone you love as-is. Or, if you're enjoying the box for yourself, you may do what I did, and open it very slowly so as to savor the craftsmanship throughout.
What's Inside The Box
This quarter highlights Peru. The fold-out pamphlet includes an interview with one of the makers, Edison Canal. Edison's works aren't in every single box—since this subscription box offers the option to fully customize your selections, you may or may not end up choosing one of his alpaca wool creations. But if you go the route of a surprise curation, you may find his beautiful fingerless gloves keeping you warm this winter.
The box came with a handwritten postcard from the Peruvian neighbor who packed the box. I love this personal touch!
Unique Womens Alpaca Wool Solid Knit Hat, "Mountain Path" by Alfredo Falcon — Retail Value: $44.99
I enjoy being surprised by subscriptions, and this hat really did surprise me! Firstly because its alpaca wool is such a fine knit and the cables seem so perfect, it's hard to believe it's handmade. The info card shares that maker Alfredo Falcon learned to knit as a child, keeping a generations-old craft alive in his family. But secondly the wheat color is so surprisingly cozy. I like that even when double-folded, the band is thick, so it keeps the ears very warm. The hat is roomy and stretches but also keeps its shape—so it actually fits everyone in my family ranging from my big-headed husband to my youngest child (who has claimed this hat as her own).
Dog-Themed Red Ceramic Figurine with Hand-Painted Motifs, "Cheerful Dog" by Andean Treasures Market — Retail Value: $23.99
"Big ears, bright spirit and bursting with charm, this hand-painted ceramic puppy brings a playful splash of Andean joy to any space." I completely agree with this description! There's something so dear about this ceramic dog, and it has truly been making us smile. The hand painted details remind me of Mexican alebrijes, and while Peru doesn't seem to have a direct equivalent, there are a lot of similar colorful motifs in their folk art, including their iconic retablos.
The colors feel right for the holiday season now, but I have a feeling it will remain on our mantel even after the Christmas stuff is packed away.
Birdhouse-Shaped Blue Dried Gourd Floral Christmas Ornament, "Blue Birdhouse Bloom" by Percy Rojas — Retail Value: $19.99
This petite birdhouse is made from a hollowed gourd. It's lightweight and painted so sweetly! Nothing beats repurposing nature's gifts, especially to help critters. This birdhouse is small and light enough to hang on our Christmas tree until springtime.
Polished Sterling Silver Modern Ear Cuffs Crafted in Peru, "Resonance" by Adriana de Gaden — Retail Value: $29.99
These sterling silver ear cuffs are gorgeous, and the quality is amazing. With a little grit, I was able to open them up slightly to fit over my ear without falling off. They're lightweight and comfortable, yet sturdy.
It's amazing something so small and relatively simple can have such an impact! I love how the triple cuff looks worn alone—such a tasteful adornment when a little something extra is needed. I can see myself wearing one on each ear, and I love that they aren't symmetrical. I wear big earrings almost every day, and these would go great with or without a pair hanging from my lobes.
"Little Red Pucara Bull" by Maribel Posso — Retail Value: $23.99
The details on this small bull are incredible! While in ways it's similar to the painted dog, the bull has a different spirit to it—it's more serene and even serious. It has high impact for such a little trinket. As is my theme with this box, I'm considering putting a string through its back and hanging it on my tree, but it can also be set on any surface and it would bring such eye-catching color to that corner of your home.
Value
The 5 items in this box add up to a retail value of $142.95. For a $59.99 box, that value feels great! I love to support independent artists anyway, but there's something special and even almost spiritual about unpacking a box straight from Peru, with messages from the artists themselves, and getting a taste of what I might find were I to go there myself. In fact, my editor Judith recently traveled to Peru and was quite impressed with the selection in both this edition of the Winter box and the other winter curation I reviewed.
The Verdict
No box is quite like UNDISCOVERED Artisan Box! Supporting artisans feels so good, and as a trinket person, I love having pieces from across the globe throughout my home. I enjoyed every item in my box and look forward to future surprise selections!
