First Impressions

How is it that the winter months drag on forever, while summer flies by in an instant? As September approaches, I find myself swept up in a whirlwind of football, fair prep, and the back-to-school blues. Our summer was amazing, but far too short—and I can’t help feeling a little overwhelmed as it ends. Thankfully, to help break through the anxiety, the September TokyoTreat box arrived! Packed with thirteen unique snacks straight from Japan, this fun-filled box was an absolute delight to open. With a bit of TokyoTreat experience under my belt, I can confidently say it’s one of the most exciting subscription boxes I’ve ever unboxed. I’m definitely a fan! Keep reading to see all the delicious discoveries inside.
What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, this truly makes me feel like part of the family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
Mont Blanc KitKats - Retail Value $7.48
Every TokyoTreat box I’ve received has included a large bag of specialty-flavored KitKat bars and it’s one of our favorite parts of the box, since KitKats are pretty much our all-time favorite candy. While the original milk chocolate version is great, we’ve discovered some truly magnificent upgrades through this subscription. Speaking of magnificent, this month’s Mont Blanc flavor fits the bill perfectly. Featuring notes of sweet chestnut and white chocolate, this variety does contain a hint of rum and is absolutely decadent. Even though they arrived a bit melted thanks to our extreme summer heat, the bars were still crispy, sweet, and nutty. I’ll be honest, I snatched up the rest and hid them in my secret mom stash. They were just too darn good to share!
Monastic Pudding Mochi
The next item we received was a small pack of Moontastic Pudding Mochi. This little snack was probably the closest thing to a gummy in the box, so Charlie was dying to give it a try. Extremely soft in texture, it felt like a fluffy marshmallow but was filled with a creamy pudding custard. When Charlie read the description, he was a bit hesitant, but ended up loving this gooey, stretchy, sweet treat!
Fall Butter Biscuit
I love butter biscuits and think I’ve had a similar snack in the past. While simple in appearance, these scalloped crackers deliver the perfect balance of sweet, crunchy, buttery deliciousness. Lightly sprinkled with sugar, they’re not overly sweet, but they pair perfectly with a cup of coffee for an afternoon pick-me-up. Charlie found the sweet-and-savory combo right up his alley AND managed to sneak three before Hank even got a chance to try them! Overall, while simple, these were definitely a win!
Carrot Crunch Rice Puffs
How adorable is this packaging?! I’m loving the carrot-shaped design as I've only seen similar cuteness from Reese’s Pieces around Easter time. Perfect for the fall harvest vibe, this carrot package held an impressive amount of crunchy rice puffs! Small in size, these airy little treats had a sweet flavor that didn’t exactly taste like carrots, but reminded us more of Honeycomb cereal. The kids absolutely loved them and said they’d definitely like to see more carrot-shaped snack packages in the future!
Seaweed Salt Potato Chips
This snack gave us a good laugh as Charlie had declared he would NOT be eating any seaweed snacks during our taste-testing session this month. I said that was fine, and we continued going through the box. Usually, I read the descriptions before we try the snacks, but Charlie was so excited to try these tasty-looking chips that he just dug in without checking the flavor. Lo and behold, they were seaweed and salt flavored and there he was, munching away, going on about how delicious they were. I just nodded and didn’t say a word… until we had devoured the entire bag. Then I read the description out loud. Charlie was shocked! Salty, thick, and lightly earthy from the seaweed, these chips had a mild flavor but were surprisingly tasty. Charlie definitely learned a valuable lesson from this: “Don’t knock it until you try it!” 🤣
Fall Fruits Jelly
We need a drumroll for this next inclusion because not only was it Pokémon-themed, but it was also a jelly snack! Featuring four small containers, each with a different Pokémon character on the lid, these grape-flavored jelly shots were a hit. This type of candy isn’t something we see often in the U.S., but Charlie LOVES it. He quickly downed a couple and decided to freeze the other two to see how they'd taste chilled. I’m not much of a grape fan, but I gave it a try. It had a very real grape flavor, but the texture was a bit weird for me. I’d still choose chocolate any day but Charlie thought these were awesome!
Sweet Potato Wafer Rolls
As babies, both of my boys loved sweet potatoes, but as they've grown, they seem to have lost their taste for them. That didn’t stop them from giving these pretty purple wafer rolls a try, though! With a very fall-like color palette and flavor profile, we received two packs of these rolls. Crispy on the outside and filled with a sweet potato cream and brown sugar flavor, they nailed the natural taste. We all thought they were okay, but honestly, we would’ve preferred a different flavor combo instead.
Mini Matcha Baumkuchen
When Charlie saw this item, he was sure it was seaweed-flavored because of the green coloring. After the chip incident, he was a bit hesitant until we read the description and found out it was actually a matcha-flavored cake. Rolled up like masking tape, this soft cake had a very earthy matcha flavor. As an adult, I enjoyed it, but Charlie thought it was boring and weird. At least he gave it a try!
Choco Dream Star Bites
If you like Cocoa Puffs, you’ll definitely enjoy this next treat! With a fluffy, soft texture similar to Puffcorn, these chocolatey stars were fantastic. Sweet with just a hint of salt, this was a snack our whole family loved and we all wished there had been more!
Honey Butter Puffs
Similar in texture to the Choco Dream Star Bites, this next snack had that same delicious, airy, styrofoam-like crunch—packed with flavor. Looking almost exactly like packing peanuts, these Honey Butter Puffs were sweet, salty, and absolutely fantastic! Thanks to their fluffy texture, they practically melted in our mouths and were completely irresistible. With that rich honey butter glaze, it’s no surprise they were gobbled up just minutes after opening!
Harusame Full Moon Egg Soup
I really appreciate when the TokyoTreat box includes a full lunch item, and the September box didn’t disappoint. This time, we received a cup of Harusame Full Moon Egg Soup. Just add hot water to the fill line, give it a stir, and enjoy a warm, steamy bowl! Since it's been in the upper 80s lately, we haven’t tried it yet. But it feels perfect for a cooler day—definitely something to look forward to as the seasons begin to change.
Heartwarming Harvest Cookie
Rounding out our sweet snacks nicely, we received these pretty, heart-shaped harvest cookies. As a nod to the upcoming fall season, these flaky treats are made from layers of pie dough and lightly coated with sugar. One of our cookies did arrive broken, but it tasted just as delicious! A very simple dessert, we actually make a version of these at home whenever we have leftover pie crust and they’re the perfect little treat. These were definitely prettier than our homemade ones, and my husband really appreciated the simple, classic inclusion.
Crispy Seaweed Bites
Last up was a small package of Crispy Seaweed Bites. After Charlie tricked himself with the chips, he decided to try and prank his brother with this one. Hank, who’s obsessed with baseball, got a kick out of the packaging—it features a cartoon baseball player holding a bat. My 10-year-old told my 12-year-old that these crisps were made from the same materials as a special Japanese baseball bat because of the lovely packaging. Hank thought that was awesome and gave them a try. As he reached for a second piece, Charlie spilled the beans and revealed they were actually seaweed. Hank brushed it off like a champ and said they weren’t bad—but he definitely gave Charlie the evil eye. I swear, there’s never a dull moment with these kids!
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes—and after several months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is an amazing subscription and our absolute favorite of all time! After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, my family is beyond impressed. This month’s curation was solid. While there weren’t as many fun gummy snacks as last month, the kids enjoyed trying flavors they wouldn’t normally go for (I’m talking about you, sweet potato and seaweed!). Although the kids didn’t love every single item, everything did get eaten—and we had a great time trying it all. This month’s favorites were the KitKats, seaweed potato chips, Pokémon jelly cups, and Honey Butter puffs. Overall, we were once again impressed by the variety and some of the best packaging we've seen in any snack box. We’re already looking forward to October’s box and have our fingers crossed for more gummies. Any guesses on next month’s theme? Comment below!

To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 9/15.
Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 13 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.84 a pack, this is a bit pricier than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
