Opening the Box
If you've been with us for awhile, you'll know that Daily Harvest has long been an MSA favorite. We've been obsessing over their smoothies for nearly a decade, have professed our love for their overnight oats publicly, and long been intrigued by their bites and savory meals. Remember when they had sundaes? They also have protein powder now!
It's been awhile, so we're going back in to see how Daily Harvest has held up over the years. Starting with breakfast bowls. All the bowls came packaged with insulation and dry ice, so they arrived perfectly frozen.
What's Inside
Cinnamon + Banana Breakfast Bowl — Retail Value $6.79
The breakfast bowls arrive in what seems like a cardboard bowl but it's actually made of plant-based molded fiber that can be curbside recycled once the food is rinsed out. It comes closed in a plastic seal and tucked into a recyclable sleeve. Inside, the food is freeze dried and how you eat it is yours to decide! You always start by adding 1/2 cup of milk (any milk) and then you can leave it to sit for 6+ hours to eat cold, microwave it for about 3 minutes, or pour the contents into a pot to cook for 2-3 minutes. Our family eats oatmeal for breakfast almost every morning so I automatically reached for the pot and couldn't believe how quick and easy the 3 minutes was compared to our norm.
The Cinnamon + Banana flavor is one of Daily Harvest's bestsellers, and I can see why. It's a classic flavor. The oats are soft but with texture, and there are the tiniest chunks of soft sweet potatoes, some banana slices, a touch of maple and cinnamon, and even some reishi powder for an immune boost with totally hidden flavor. My whole family passed this bowl around to try (including our 6-year-old and 4-year-old), and we all love how mild the flavor is. I could imagine folks who are used to pre-sweetened oatmeal packets would feel there is something lacking here, but personally I find store-bought flavored oats to be too strong and was delighted by the natural flavors as a gentle way to start the morning.
Apple + Cinnamon Breakfast Bowl — Retail Value $6.79
Another bestseller is this Apple + Cinnamon breakfast bowl. It's not hard to imagine why—this is such a classic combo. The apple and cinnamon are joined by walnuts and pumpkin seeds—yum—and there's some cauliflower snuck in. Frozen, riced cauliflower is a veggie I sneak into so many things including smoothies and rice dishes, and I hadn't thought to add it to oatmeal, but now I'll start.
Yet again, the flavor is mild but delightful, the texture is perfectly porridge-y but with some interest thanks to the nuts and seeds, and the small apple chunks are soft with natural sweetness. Another winner in our book.
Chai Spiced Squash + Pecans Breakfast Bowl — Retail Value $6.79
Personally I love squash and know how versatile it can be, yet I was still a little nervous to try this one! Maybe because I've never tried kabocha squash and seeing it pictured on the front of the package sent me such savory vibes. But of course Daily Harvest completely knows what they're doing and this one turned out to be my favorite of the bunch!
The flavor is nicely spiced and warming. I'm not a fan of raisins but they're sparse enough that I just ate most of them. Whereas Both the Cinnamon + Banana and Apple + Cinnamon flavors would take way more time and effort to achieve on my own but could be done, this combo is a really unlikely one for me to make from scratch in my kitchen, so it feels extra appreciated to have prepped for me.
Peach + Cinnamon Breakfast Bowl — Retail Value $6.79
The Peach + Cinnamon breakfast bowl is a little different from the others. Its ingredient include peaches, apples, pumpkin seeds, shaved coconut, mulberries, and cinnamon. The coconut flavor is subtle, but the texture is really prominent and unique!
Even just visually, with the tiny mulberry bits and coconut, you can see that this bowl is something different. The peach flavor makes it sweeter and blends nicely with the taste of the coconut, and pumpkin seeds are always welcome in whatever I'm eating. After a few bites I wasn't sure how I liked the texture, but my husband was really into it and said this is his favorite of the bunch.
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $6.79 per bowl. $50 minimum per order. The more you order, the more you save. 10% savings on orders $100+ are automatically deducted at checkout. Ships to the US only.
As a daily oatmeal eater, I was admittedly skeptical that I could have my mind blown by frozen oatmeal bowls. It's second nature for me to add dollops of maple syrup, a variety of seeds, and cinnamon while half-asleep in the morning. But I've had my mind changed. Each bowl here has a secret ingredient that adds to the benefits, made hot they come together so quickly, and they just taste so darn good. These three wins make the price feel worthwhile, especially if you can anticipate seasons when time for healthy food prep will be difficult.
