About the pup

My dog June is nearly 2 years old. She has been a healthy, active pup in the year that she's been in our family, but we had continued her on the same type of kibble her previous owner had fed her to ease the transition. June is a Red Heeler, aka a cattle dog, and this lady likes to run fast. I knew that given her extremely active lifestyle her diet would need to evolve into something that could support her fueling needs. She has historically loved a good marrow bone, so when I found out about Maev's frozen raw approach I was interested for June. Last month she had an encounter with a skunk and unfortunately needed a lot of baths in the days and even weeks since. So I chose the skin & coat formula for June to help hydrate her skin again.

Unboxing Our Maev Order

I was so impressed with Maev's delivery. I've received a lot of human meal kits over the years and things are generally thawing by the time they arrive on my doorstep. Not the case here. The two bags of dog food were packed in insulation packs with black ice on top. It remained totally frozen in transit.

This detailed manual provides tons of information about Maev dog food, how to make the transition to using it, and even some worksheet-style guides for tracking your dog's health improvements.

Inside Our Maev Order

Chicken, Skin & Coat Formula, 5lb

When I opened the Chicken flavor, I was so pleased with what I saw. The pieces are clearly real, identifiable food! The chunks are the perfect bite size, they're flash frozen so they're easily scoopable and not frozen together in a giant lump. Really a quality experience.

This is Day 1, with a combo of kibble and Maev food. You can see tiny feet in the photo—the whole family was excited for June's new diet. June was pretty confused at first. She picked up chunks of meat from her bowl that we expected her to gobble and set them aside. She did revisit them and eat them, and it made us realize maybe they were cold for her. So for the following few feedings we followed the guideline of letting the food sit out in her bowl for a few minutes before feeding her. Within days we were back to feeding her immediately, and she circled me like a shark each time I was about to feed her. After that initial day or two of sorting out the change, June was officially obsessed. She has now developed an internal clock for dinnertime; she finds me and sits patiently when she's ready for dinner!

Beef, Skin & Coat Formula, 5 lb

The beef formulation comes with chunks of grass-fed beef in it. Beef is of course naturally richer in protein and fat, and is a great option for dogs who need to gain weight. Both the chicken and beef formulas contain organ meat, which offers super bioavailable nutrients and immune support. Since June doesn't currently have a serious health concern to target, we are rotating her meal offerings between chicken and beef to give her more well-rounded nutrition.

The result? One extremely happy, well-fed pup.

Verdict

I can't say enough good things about Maev. Their recipes are crafted with input from veterinary nutritionists and feature 11 core ingredients packed with the protein and nutrients dogs need. Each formula includes fiber, calcium, and essential omegas to help support your pup’s long-term health and energy. And, most importantly, my dog loves it. Maev is a bit of an investment. But I think we as pet owners can agree that we all choose ways to invest in our pets so that their health and wellbeing is cared for, and their time as our best buds is long and blissful!
