BoxyCharm by Ipsy “Sunny Days Ahead” Review June 2024

The theme was “The Secret Garden,” the box included spring beauty staples inspired by florals, botanicals, and aromatics.

As I’m still saying goodbye to the excitement of the Icon Box, a new BoxyCharm box arrives in the mail. This time around, the box is a balanced mix of 50/50 makeup and skincare. It's all about kicking off summer with bright colors, hydration must-haves, and everything you need to keep your skin glowing.

BoxyCharm by Ipsy is a $30 monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. It always provides great value compared to the cost of the box and includes 5 beauty items, including nail care, skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized.) If you are a makeup or skincare addict, we recommend this box!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

This month’s box didn’t include the foam that the May box had, which was a bit disappointing. As a result, everything inside seemed just thrown together, which made it feel a bit messy.

The booklet inside talked a little about some of the products and a few popular picks. I was surprised to see only a small mention of Pride Month in this month’s picks and booklet—I was expecting more.

What’s Inside

JLo Glow Brightening & Firming Serum – Retail Value: $79

I’m not going to sugarcoat it: this product is uninspiring, to say the least. I wasn’t a big fan of JLo’s beauty brand to begin with, so seeing this in the box didn’t excite me. The product came without its box, already opened, and looked dull. The texture is very watery-serum-like, lightweight, and almost instantly absorbed. However, there’s nothing exciting about this. It’s a niacinamide serum for $79! I probably wouldn’t buy this product.

R.E.M. Beauty Lunar Magic Blurring Primer – Retail Value: $29

I’m a big fan of R.E.M. Beauty products, and this was my first time trying this primer. It has that classic silicone-like texture you’d expect from a primer. It has a funny-looking moon-blue shade, which I love. While it doesn’t erase all pores, it did help my foundation go on more smoothly and stay on longer. It didn’t feel heavy or sticky on the skin, so I think this is perfect for summer makeup.

Half Caked Eye Defy Zero Gravity Mascara Black – Retail Value: $18

Initially, I was really excited about this mascara. The zero-gravity claim intrigued me, and the brush type really helps curl my eyelashes without the need for extra tools. All was good until I realized this wasn’t waterproof. Isn’t this box a summer box? Why include a mascara that will leave you looking like a raccoon? 🦝 Pass!

Jazmine Beauty Complexion Brush Trio – Retail Value: $52

With all the makeup I’ve been getting, I picked these brushes to up my makeup game. The bristles are soft, none have fallen out, and they’re quite pretty. I appreciate that the kit has everything you need to do your makeup. I wouldn’t say these are premium brushes, but they’re fairly nice.

Context Skin Shimmer Eye Stick in Crossfire – Retail Value: $20

I’m a big fan of eye sticks, and this one with shimmer was too good to pass up. It’s very shimmery, giving a metallic look rather than glitter, perfect for a bold look. However, the formula is very stiff, leaving little room for blending or mixing with other shadows. I’d even call this a marker because it will not smudge, no matter how hard you try. Perfect for all-day or busy nighttime makeup because this shadow will stay on all night.

Beauty Boost: Glow Recipe Pomegranate Peptide Firming Serum – Retail Value: $45

I chose this one since the other options didn’t pique my interest. I’ve heard a lot about this serum but never tried it myself. I expected a pomegranate-scented, pink-hued serum but got something totally different. It’s a very lightweight serum that absorbs almost instantly, with no scent or color whatsoever. I guess we’ll have to see if I notice any difference from using this.

Takeaways

Overall, this box was a bit of a letdown. The options available could have been more exciting, and some were pretty repetitive. Coming from the Icon Box to this feels like day and night—very different experiences.

I’m also surprised we didn’t see more Pride Month specials. This box should have been so fun and colorful, but it was instead very uninspiring.

Even other reviews echoed similar sentiments. Here’s hoping that we get something more exciting next time.
