Sensory TheraPlay Box is a monthly subscription service for children on the autism spectrum, or with sensory processing issues. Each box is filled with sensory toys or games that help develop motor skills or address varying sensory needs through therapeutic play.

First Impressions

It's December, and I am counting down the days to Christmas vacation! We are halfway through the second quarter of school, but boy oh boy, do I need a break! The kids need a break too, but to keep them engaged for a little bit longer, the Sensory TheraPlay box came just in the nick of time. With a lot of emotional escalation and anxiety lately, I've utilized almost every single inclusion from past boxes, and couldn't wait to dive into this month's curation. Read below to see what we received.

What's Inside This Box

Each box comes with a one-page insert, which includes photos of the items on the front and a brief description with their values on the back. It also includes contact information and a disclaimer about how it is the responsibility of the adult to determine whether the items included are appropriate for the child. I love the fact that this sheet specifies how certain items can be used, and what goals can be accomplished. Because I work with a variety of students, it gave me an idea of which items will be most effective with which kids.

Perfect for winter, this beautiful postcard features a lovely saying that is quite impactful when you really think about it. I have added it to my school bulletin board of positivity, and the kids love it!

Wild Republic Polar Bear Hugger - Retail Value $14.99

I've got two boys, but honestly, I hadn't heard of a "Hugger" until now. This adorable fluffy polar bear stuffie is not only cute, but functional. Featuring triple protected, specially designed snap bracelet arms, you can attach this guy to your arm, bike, backpack, or anything else you can get his arms around. Not only is this guy made from high quality materials, but the fill inside is made of spun recycled water bottles! Charlie is 8, but still a huge fan of stuffies and bears. He took this guy right away, and loved the way it gently squeezed his arm. Snuggly and calming, I've already been told this guy doesn't get to go to school, and was happy that Charlie enjoyed him so much.

DIY Calm Down Sensory Bottle - Retail Value $26.95

Back in our ECFE days, we made calm down bottles with oil, food coloring, and water; but this kit was so much cooler! Featuring a strong plastic tube, silicone caps, glitter, and goodies, Charlie loved making this! Not only can you refresh the contents, but the silicone caps are also calming because of their textured grips.

I had a hard time convincing Charlie that we should keep this calming bottle at school for other kids to use, but he eventually said okay. There are so many things to focus on while shaking this bottle, that it truly does work to de-escalate kids, as well as adults! Super pretty and sparkly, it has become a staple on my desk, and was my favorite inclusion in this month's box.

Sensory Rain Stick - Retail Value $7.99

Another inclusion that brings me back to our ECFE days is this rain stick. Featuring colorful beads, this plastic tube creates a harmonious rain sound when flipped back and forth. A fantastic auditory and visual sensory experience, this works to de-escalate students like the calm down sensory bottle, all while bringing a smile to their face.

Shape-Shifting Magic Cube- Retail Value $5.99

I have caught a glimpse of these magic cubes before, but haven't gotten to try them out myself until now. I have to say - this thing is amazing! It's a plastic square, and then it's not! It transforms in so many crazy ways! To be utilized as a hand fidget and visual sensory toy, this really helps calm a person down, and is just plain fun. My husband even loved this one.

Fidlbitz - Retail Value $5.00

The last item we received was one I was unfamiliar with. Fidlbitz are tiny foam cubes that stick together, but aren't sticky. Great for kids that experience sensory sensitivity, these cubes have no sticky feeling when touched, but can be stacked really high, and smooshed together to create any shape or object your heart desires. Inspiring creativity and providing fun, I am really intrigued by this product, and have the rainbow-colored set in my Amazon cart as we speak...

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $42.00 + shipping (Save with longer subscriptions)

The total retail value of our box using a mix of listed and found retail values comes to $60.00, which is almost $18 off of retail price. That, plus adding in shipping costs means you are definitely getting a deal. The decent value coupled with the items coordinating with the December season left me really impressed this month. Each and every item was useful and fun, and brought joy to my classroom, along with being a hit with my kids (and adults) of all ages. Overall, we are extremely happy with this subscription!

Key Takeaways

If you ask my kids which subscription box is their favorite, both my biological kids and my school kids will tell you that Sensory TheraPlay is definitely it. With a variety of sensory options, we continue to be impressed with the thoughtfulness in this curation. As an educator, I have seen a multitude of fidgets, but this box continues to surprise me! Overall, this was a fantastic box and we have utilized every single item. We can't wait to see what they have in store for January!
