Universal Yums is a snack subscription box that sends out snacks and candies from a different country each month. The contents of the boxes change each month as they highlight the best snacks from each featured country, but you can always expect a mix of flavors: salty, sweet, spicy, fruity, and more. Choose from the Yum Box for $17.00 per month, the Yum Yum Box for $29.00 per month, or the Super Yum Box for $45.00 per month. (You also have the option to save by purchasing a 3,6-, or 12-month plan.)

This review is of the Yum Yum box, which is $29.00 per month.

Author's Note: The cost of this box increased last year, but now has gone back to the original prices!

First Impressions

Universal Yums has done wonders for my school popularity, and I'm 100% okay with it. Not only is this subscription a wonderful family experience, but every once in a while I will share these fun snacks with my students instead of my kids. Seriously, if you are an educator looking to connect with a student that just isn't having it, try offering them a snack from a different country - I have built many a relationships this way - and they keep coming back!

What's Inside the Box

Every month we receive a fun, illustrated map that shows where our Yums are coming from. This month we received a map of Turkey packed with fun trivia. The back side hosts the usual Yum Scoreboard and scavenger hunt. Also included in this box is a helpful pamphlet that guides you through a typical day in the Turkey via trivia, recipes, photography, and activities. Delicious AND educational!

Sweet Corn Pretzel Pieces - Buy a pack of 3 for $5.70

What impeccable timing to receive a sweet corn treat, as we just planted our very own sweet corn yesterday. This is Charlie's very favorite garden produce and he couldn't wait to dive into these uniquely flavored pretzels. Crunchy and packed with flavor, these truly do have a fresh sweet corn flavor, but I'm not sure how I feel about the combo. Charlie really liked them, but I just couldn't get into it. What were your thoughts of this unusual treat?

Coffee Coconut Cake - Buy a pack of 4 of $4.40

Taking me back to the "old" days, my family couldn't wait to open up this coffee flavored snowball. Because of the fun sprinkle covered top and marshmallow-like filling, this coffee flavored cake was moist, soft, and packed with flavor. The kids didn't even mind the coffee flavor when paired with the chocolate and coconut, making it a win in our book!

Cola Marshmallows - Buy a pack of 4 for $5.20

I love a good marshmallow, but wasn't quite sure about the cola marshmallow flavor combo. These squishy little guys are shaped like little cola bottles and are not only adorable, but pretty tasty too. With the perfect balance of cola and vanilla flavoring, these soft and fluffy marshmallows were really sweet but strangely satisfying. Charlie has his mind set on a a cola marshmallow s'more in the near future, and being intrigued myself, think I will make this happen as soon as this rain stops!

Date Cookie Bar - Buy a pack of 6 for $4.80

Dates are one fruit that I feel are under represented, and was happy to receive this date cookie bar. My mom used to make date bars, date cookies, and date bread often and this sweet and nutty bar had me reminiscing the good old days. Chewy on the outside with a sweet date filling, it sort of tasted like a Fig Newton, but in an extra special sort of way.

Honey Mustard & Onion Rice Cakes - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.20

Rice cakes aren't my favorite, but I love honey mustard and onion. With a sweet and zesty flavor, this crunchy treat was much tastier than a traditional rice cake, and left me craving more. The kids agreed these were pretty good and packed them in their lunch boxes for snack time.

Cocoa Hazelnut Mosaic Cookies - Buy a pack of 6 for $5.40

Because we are headed into the warmer months, I was a little worried we wouldn't see anymore chocolate for a while, so I was pleasantly surprised to find these delicious cocoa hazelnut mosaic cookies packed inside this month's box. A rich chocolate and vanilla cookie filled with tahini (a traditional Turkish paste of ground sesame seeds), these beautiful cookies were a bit crumbled, but plate licking delicious. Don't mind me, I'm just headed to the Yum Shop!

Sugar Coated Chickpeas - Buy a pack of 2 for $4.00

Strangely addicting, I never thought I'd crave a chickpea, and yet here I am. Coated in sugar, these roasted chickpeas are nutty, sweet, and ever so satisfying! Had we not devoured this nice sized bag in mere seconds, these crunchy little morsels would be fabulous in a trail mix or tossed in with some Puppy Chow!

Assorted Turkish Delights - Buy a pack of 2 for $6.20

Though we last visited Turkey in 2021, we received a variation of these Turkish Delights in a Holiday box. I didn't care for them then and sadly my views haven't changed. These soft jelly squares are orange, lemon, and rose flavored and covered in powdered sugar. Very sweet and gooey, I maybe would enjoy these more in smaller increments, so maybe I'll cut them up and give them a try.

Orange Jelly Tartlets - Buy a pack of 4 for $5.20

While my husband isn't a fan of orange flavored foods, I love this chocolate-orange combination! Shortbread cookies are my fave and with the scalloped edges and sprinkles, these beautiful little cookies are show stoppers and would look pretty on any dessert plate!

Turkish Coffee

We are coffee lovers in this house and were really excited to give this Turkish coffee a try. This particular version is thick and creamy and really delicious. I could use a bigger batch!

Choco Banana Cake - Buy a pack of 4 for $4.00

Usually I'm not a big fan of banana, but this chocolate banana cake really surprised me. With a real banana flavor, this soft cake melded very well with the chocolate flavoring. The boys really enjoyed this fluffy cake and asked if we could add this to our Yum Shop list too!

The Verdict

Universal Yums is one of our favorite subscriptions of all time, and this box curation was a hit. Overall we loved the savory snacks and the inclusion of the chocolate. While this box was pretty darn tasty, it also created an enjoyable and educational experience for my family (and students!) We already can't wait to see what's in store for July! Where do you think we will be headed next?
