Sensory TheraPlay Box is a monthly subscription service for children on the autism spectrum, or with sensory processing issues. Each box is filled with sensory toys or games that help develop motor skills or address varying sensory needs through therapeutic play.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Like I have mentioned before, since I started receiving the Sensory TheraPlay box, my classroom has become the "it" room at school and that hasn't definitely not changed! Because I work with students grades K-12, I see students with various abilities, and they have been spreading the word to other students about all the fun new fidgets that keep showing up, and I'm not one bit mad about it! Read below to see what was included this month.

What's Inside This Box

Each box comes with a one-page insert with photos of the items on the front and a brief description with their values on the back. It also includes contact information and a disclaimer about how it is the responsibility of the adult to determine whether the items included are appropriate for the child. I love the fact that this sheet specifies how certain inclusions can be used, and what goals can be accomplished. Because I work with a variety of students, it gave me an idea of which items can be used with which kids.

Though small in value, I love the inclusion of the inspirational quote. My room is full of these positive notes and reading through them can impact a mood in a good way. Printed on card stock, this postcard sized art adds a spark of belief to my bulletin boards, and brightens them up with their fun colors and fonts!

Glitter Roll From Land of Dough - Retail Value $5.00

Even at the age of 34, I love Play-Doh. That being said, I have never experienced a dough quite like the one we received in our Sensory Theraplay box. This all natural-dough is handcrafted in the USA and not only is beautiful (do you see that compostable glitter?!) but it contains calming essential oils as well. With an "enchanted forest" design, this ultra soft dough rolls out beautifully, and is packaged so cute! To keep dough soft, you can store the dough in the bag, but if you are looking to save a sculpture, you can set it out to dry! This dough is seriously sophisticated, and my boys loved creating cookies and snowmen all while inhaling the essential oil fragrance!

Jeliku 3D Puzzle - Retail Value $4.00

My husband is all about working with his hands. He is an electrician, and is a bit of a minimalist. Toys don't usually impress him, but when he saw this 3D puzzle, he actually grabbed it out of the box and started playing with it! Spending about 5 minutes stretching it out, bending it back and forth, and creating different shapes, I was floored that he sat still for that long of a time! Because of it's small size and portability, this puzzle is perfect to throw in my purse, and makes for a perfect manipulation tool and fidget, all while strengthening hand muscles and sharpening creativity!

Sensory Dino Pop! Retail Value $7.99

Pop-its are super cool, but this dinosaur pop-it blows all others out of the water. Because this guy is 3D, you can push down all of the bubbles, then SQUEEZE the dinosaur for a loud satisfying popping sound! Working fine motor and finger isolation skills, this tool is also helpful in managing anxiety. Charlie loved this guy, and honestly, I did too!

Sugar Smooshie! - Retail Value $4.00

This box is definitely not just for kids because my husband found this sugar smooshie stress ball ultra fascinating too. Hard on the outside, this ball would definitely hurt to get hit with, but when in your hand, it slowly melts into a flat shape. Once let go, it quickly takes on its original ball shape, and is so satisfying to squeeze! This fun ball is excellent for providing 'heavy work' input to the muscles of the hands and fingers, and can help promote hand strengthening and fine motor skills, all while being a blast to play with!

Sticky Mosaics - Retail Value $5.00

How cute are these puppies?! With a new puppy headed our way in a couple of months, this was a perfect addition to an already fabulous box. With heavy duty backgrounds, this activity includes vibrant sticker tiles, and encourages visual motor skills, spatial reasoning, and matching skills. A great activity for a rainy April day, the kids were fans, and so was I!

Suction Stackers - Retail Value $10.00

While Charlie's favorite item was the dinosaur, mine was definitely this set of suction stackers. Not only are these guys fun to build with, but the popping sound is addicting, and the little faces are adorable. Great for working on fine motor skills and bilateral coordination, I also found that these aid in managing anxiety. Ultra appealing because of their bright colors, I am already throwing around the idea of purchasing another set just because I love them so much!

Wiggle Sensory Shark - Retail Value $5.99

The last item we received this month was a wiggle sensory shark. A close second in Charlie's book, this wiggly guy is fun to hold and manipulate. With a cute face, this friendly shark is calming and fun to play with. My husband is convinced this guy could catch a Northern Pike, but I don't think Charlie would put it down long enough for him to try! 🙂

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $42.00 + shipping (Save with longer subscriptions)

The total retail value of our box using a mix of listed and found retail values comes to $42.00, which isn't an incredible savings from the retail price, but if you start adding in shipping costs, you are definitely getting a deal. All of this months items were extremely useful and fun, and my kids (and husband) continue to be wowed by this subscription.

Key Takeaways

Being a few months into this subscription, my biological kids, and my school kids will tell you this is one of the best subscriptions ever! With a variety of sensory options, we all very much appreciate the thoughtfulness in the curation. As an educator, I have experience with a multitude of fidgets, but these were all new to me, and all very useful and helpful! Overall, this was a great box, and can't wait to see what they have in store for May!
