The Walmart Beauty Box is a quarterly beauty sample subscription box from Walmart. When you sign up you will answer a series of questions about your skin tone, skin concerns, hair type, and more. The answers are used to provide a more personalized experience so that they can tailor your box to you. Once in a while, Walmart offers upgrade options. This quarter, for a a slight up-charge ($12.98 for new subscribers and $10.98 for existing subscribers), you will receive more (and larger) items than those found in the regular $6.98 box.

This is a review of the $12.98 (or $10.98 if current subscriber) Winter Upgrade Box.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

How exciting! With the first day of winter just around the corner, I received the Winter Walmart beauty box before the actual season change. Props on the promptness! With only a few days before Christmas, I am definitely feeling a bit run-down and in need of some self care. Because of the surprising heaviness of the box, I couldn't wait to see what was included in this seasons upgrade. Read below to find out what I received.

This quarter we received a pamphlet detailing all of the items  included in the Winter Upgrade box. Debuting seven items, most are impressive in size! Being a nice mix of hair care, skin care, and make up, the choices were curated very well, and will definitely come in handy during the winter months.

Cetaphil Healing Ointment - 3 oz Retail Value $9.97

Winter is here in Minnesota in full force, and between the sub zero temps and the dry air, my skin is CHAPPED! Because I have struggled with many skin issues in my day, I am very familiar with the Cetaphil brand, and have used a multitude of their products as they were recommended by my Dermatologist. This particular petrolatum based one is new to the market, and one that I was really excited to try. Designed to protect and relieve dry, chapped, and irritated skin, this ointment is free of mineral oil, lanolin, preservatives, and fragrance. Similar to Vaseline, this protectant is easy to apply, but leaves skin greasy. If you are struggling with the drying effects of wind and cold weather like me, I recommend lathering up your hands at night and placing socks over them before bed. By morning, your hands will look and feel like new! Highly recommend!

Covergirl Simply Ageless Lash Plumping Mascara - Retail Value $9.97

I am a makeup addict, and while my favorite mascara brand is “Too Faced: Better Than Sex”, I am always game to try drug store brands to ease the effects on my wallet. At less than half the cost of my current mascara, this Covergirl Simply Ageless Lash Plumping Mascara, not only has a similar shaped brush to my current product, but applies pretty darn close to the same as well! I do want to mention, however, that I noticed one glaring difference - my regular "Too Faced" mascara doesn't smear when wet - this Covergirl version smears big time. I went outside to shovel off the sidewalk (while it was still lightly snowing), and came back in looking like a raccoon. Yikes.

Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel Toner - 3 oz Estimated Value $2.98

I love skincare, but don’t find toner in my daily regimen all that often. With a vibrant cucumber scent, I couldn't wait to try this witch hazel and aloe vera formula to see if I could notice a difference in my skin. Within days of use, I could feel my skin get a little softer and a little more balanced looking, and honestly I just plain love that cucumber scent! Fairly priced, I have definitely found a toner I feel makes a difference and will continue to use it in my skincare routine!

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier + Immune Support Electrolyte Powder Packet Drink Mix, Tangerine - Retail Value $2.00

Ahhh the ever so controversial Liquid I.V. packs! At least this time we received 2, and lucky us, in a different flavor! Not so funny story - my entire family recently ended up with Influenza A, and lo and behold, these darn hydration packets really came in handy. Though salty and not really my favorite flavor, in a time of sickness and need - they really did pull through!

Hairitage "Call It A Night" Satin Pillowcase - Retail Value $9.94

I have to say, this box has me really impressed with the large sized items, and to top it off a satin pillowcase?! I’m seriously stoked! I’ve been only sleeping on satin pillowcases for the last 10 years because my ultra fine hair turned into a fuzzball overnight when using flannel and cotton ones, and I had to try something else. This particular pillowcase is a lovely silver color and feels cool and silky on my head. Keeping my thin strands slipping around rather than fuzzing up, I don’t have a terrible case of bed head in the morning, and it sort of makes me feel like a fancy princess!

Completely Smooth Moisturizing No-Bump Shave Gel, 2 oz Estimated Value $4.26

The last item we received was a tube of no-bump shave gel. Made with aloe vera and Jojoba oil, this moisturizing no-bump shave gel is perfect for legs and pits. Because I play volleyball in the winter, I shave often, and found this gel to make a light lather and work well. I haven’t noticed any bumps since using it, and I really enjoy the light, fresh scent. Definitely a difference between using a bar of soap and this, so a great inclusion to a great box!

Verdict

With an on time delivery and a three full-sized products, Walmart's Winter Beauty Box impressed me this season. The calculated value of this $12.98 box was $39.12, which is more than triple the price of the box! I feel the curation of this box was fantastic for winter, and the variety was perfection. Overall, I thought this box was very impressive, and hope they offer upgrades like this in the future!

Love the review, but wish this was standard MSA practice. WAY too many “vs” sponsored posts on this site for me. What happened to the old site? Sigh. Double sigh. Sorry to see what’s happened to a once informative community.

Thanks for the comment Scarah! I do only these types of reviews for MSA, and am always on the lookout for more! I’ll bring it to the team to see if we can add some on! Do you have any subs in particular you enjoy reading?

I’m disappointed because I must have missed the option to upgrade. I would have liked to get the pillowcase.

I get 2 boxes per month. They used to vary, but for the last year or more I get the exact same box for both boxes. This time it says I received version 7 or 8 – if there are that many versions, why do I keep getting the same one?

Finally, I totally agree with Scarah – what on earth is going on with all these sponsored posts? And they don’t even have the option to leave comments. Just today there are 3 posts about the same meal plan and 2 or more posts about some mascara. That is **Not** what the readers of this site want. If it is going to continue down this path, I will leave this site for good.

There are tons of boxes out there that could be reviewed.
