Happy Spooky Season! There was nothing spooky about my October Rocksbox shipment... in fact, I need your help determining whether I should purchase the Kendra Scott set. They're having a sale that ends on Halloween and I can get it for 30% off.

Real quick, before we dive into this month's shipment, let's talk about Fall & Winter 2022 jewelry trends (and then you'll understand some of my choices).

Flower Power: Everything was coming up roses (and lilies) when designers sent bold floral jewelry down the runway. The Ulla Johnson, Roberto Cavalli and Miu Miu shows were in full bloom with floral earrings, necklaces, brooches and cuffs.

So Charming: This isn’t your childhood charm bracelet. From Fendi to Ulla Johnson and Jil Sander, all types of charms were seen dangling from necklaces, rings and bracelets.

Chain Reaction: While this trend has been huge (literally and figuratively), since 2021, there’s no signs of us breaking free. Fall 2022 shows saw designers like Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne reimagine this chunky silhouette and create more minimalist designs.

Clutch Your Oversized Pearls: Not to be confused with jawbreakers, massive pearls were seen on the runways of Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace for a look that’s more sultry than sweet.

Cuffs & Bangles: Spotted on the runways of Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, Rick Owens and Louis Vuitton, statement bangles and cuffs, whether layered or worn alone, will be everywhere this fall.

Rocksbox also offers a monthly credit so you can buy the pieces for less.

This is a review of the monthly plan for $21, which includes shipping to the US only.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Just like other subscription boxes, when I signed up for Rocksbox I had to set up a style profile that asked me questions like my metal preference, and which necklace, earring, bracelet, and ring styles I liked the most.

Let's check out this month's delivery!

What I Received

Perry Street Vivian Statement Studs - Retail Value $75, Member Price $68

About this item: Crafted in 14k gold over brass, the Vivian Statement Studs are blooming in a trendy floral design with crystal embellishments and a high-polish shine. They're approximately 1" long and compared to other earrings I've tried recently, they're lightweight.

Condition: Excellent.

Review: Get your bloom on! As one of the top jewelry trends of 2022, I was intrigued by these sweet, delicate studs. They're a pretty and classier change of pace from the oversized and chunky jewelry I've been choosing lately, but I did not make a purchase.

Kendra Scott Maya Hoops - Retail Price $120, Member Price $120

About this item: Ok, so I complained about Kendra Scott in the past, but I've been uncovering some treasures. The Maya Hoop earrings are crafted in 14k gold over brass mesh-metal detailing. Featuring an earpost closure, these stunners are about 1.5" in diameter, and they are HEAVY! This set is also available in a gold/silver combo.

Condition: Brand new with tags.

Review: So, they've might've torn my holes a little bit, but I absolutely love them. Pondering a purchase... help!

Kendra Scott Maya Chain Necklace - Retail Value $120, Member Price $120

About this item: The chunky chain trend is here to stay and I'm loving the brilliant Maya Chain Necklace. This mesh-metal statement piece is crafted in 14k gold over brass and it's 18" long with a 3" extender and a lobster clasp closure.

Condition: Brand new with tags.

Review: I love it as a set. There's also a bracelet, but that would be a bit too much.

The Verdict

I really want the Kendra Scott set, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. What do you think about it? Should I buy it or save my money? Do you like it together or is it too much? I can't decide. Oh, and there's a catch... the items are an extra 30% off.

Value Breakdown: Rocksbox membership costs $21 per month. At retail, the three pieces would cost me $308. With my Rocksbox discounts and the member pricing including the buy-all-three-items $10 discount and the $21 of Shine Credit (the membership fee for the month, which goes towards your purchases), and my Rose Gold Rewards discount of $15.40, AND the Spooky sale with an extra 30% off, the total price drops to $169.20.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Every box is different and packed based on the customer's tastes and what's available at the time. You can, however, help guide the Rocksbox stylists and add your favorite pieces to your wishlist!

If shopping were an Olympic sport, I’d be a gold medalist. And while my bank account often feels the crunch, I just can’t stop buying secondhand clothing and accessories, under-the-radar designer goods, stuffed animal unicorns (I have about 75), and toys for my pet bunny rabbit. After 20 years of city slicking in NYC and DC, I now have a car and love to tour the Virginia countryside looking for vintage shops, undiscovered wineries and breweries, historic sites, and Thai restaurants—I’m addicted to Thai food. I never leave home without a spare phone charger because I love horror movies and therefore have an irrational fear of being stranded somewhere with a dead battery.

Are there any rental services for hats? That would be fun!

Hi Beth! I found this on their site: Yes. Each piece is sterilized with alcohol jewelry cleaner using medical grade products and handled with jewelry experts wearing gloves.

Oh, I’d love that! And designer shoes too! I guess there’s the sanitary factor with both of those.

Just curious, how are they cleaning the jewelry between rentals? After your clothing fiasco I never really thought much about things.

Mary, I always love that you show so many views of whatever you’re reviewing, be it clothes or jewelry. I’m so one who will not wear heavy earrings. I am a healthcare provider and have seen too many rips or stretched out holes. You can have a plastic surgeon repair ripped or stretched lobes but I believe it is expensive and wouldn’t be covered by insurance. I begged my parents to get my ears pierced and they (mostly my dad was against it) and had it done by a nurse when I was 10.

After hearing these stories, I’m going to shy away from super heavy earrings.

Lillya, I didn’t take it as a diss at all and I have the same thoughts. I’ll never understand spending $100 on a fast fashion blouse that’ll fall apart in a month (and be out of style) over something I could find at a designer resale shop by like Peter Pilotto or Pucci for less (and it’s so much better)! I did buy the necklace, but it was only $57 and figured I can sell it if I change my mind… which I probably will.

I love the look of those Kendra Scott earrings, but anything heavy would be a no-go for me. My mom used to wear long, heavy earrings until her holes sagged so much that they ripped straight through her ears. Not sure how exactly she let that happen, but it’s only small and light earrings for me!

I didn’t end up getting them. They’re too heavy and I’m afraid of tears as well.

I agree with your decision. The earrings look heavy even in the photographs. My grandma used to wear heavy earrings, and her lobes were so stretched, little stud earrings would slip right through.

GAH, earrings and necklace look like my mother’s 1970’s jewelry, but hers was 14 kt. gold.

I have always been so confused as to why people will spend money on really worthless jewelry when the cost of 4 of these boxes will buy a pair of Tiffany’s sterling earrings, a delicate Tiffany blue heart bracelet, etc.

I started out with a subscription to a costume jewelry sub once, and it was so unrewarding for me. I treasure pearls, diamonds, rubies, aquamarine, tanzanite, and other stones set in either silver or true gold. ALL anyone buying the dipped or plated things has to do is stop and save a few months’ cost up and buy something real that will last. Something for a daughter to wear and treasure one day. It is so much more fulfilling long term.

It’s kind of like me buying a Valentino classic black and hot pink skirt and blazer vs. renting a knock off that’s been worn. I’ll pick the classic over 4 months of worn and smelly reruns that are on loan any day of the year. Cherish the updated classics. There is nothing to regret there.

I understand what you are saying, but I do see the value of renting clothes, especially for people who have a busy social life or work in an appearance conscious industries like fashion or media. A local reporter doing the news in the same blouse twice in two weeks would probably get criticized in our incorrigible social media haze. And the clothes Mary rents are designer, not knockoffs. I WFH, and have minimal social life, so it’s a non-issue for me, but I do see how clothing rental can be very effective for others. However, I agree with you on the jewelry. I would rather own a little pair of diamond studs than rent six months of jewelry.

I love how you explained the pros of using a clothing rental service. I totally agree. I have used them in the past and loved them barring the issue discussed last week in Mary’s other review.

Mary Zubritsky

Hi Lillya! I completely agree with you!
