IPSY is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. For $13 per month, you get five full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag.

This is one of our top recommendations if you are looking for a subscription box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (FYI – Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes).

First Impressions

Your IPSY Glam bag will come in their standard pale pink bubble wrap mailer. When you open it up, you can always expect to find a makeup bag storing your new beauty products and an info sheet with additional details.

Every month you receive a makeup bag in addition to your five products. This month's bag is a pretty turquoise blue with a starfish zipper pull.

The Breakdown – What’s Inside My July 2022 Ipsy Glam Bag

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Exfoliating Tonic, 50 mL – Estimated Value $27 (buy the 100 mL version for $54)

This is a really nice sized sample from Ipsy- it’s actually bigger than the 30 mL mini that the brand sells on their website, which is something you don’t typically see. If exfoliating toners are your favorite way to exfoliating, this may be your jam. It supports collagen production while helping to reduce signs of sun damage and hyperpigmentation, and along with that 5% glycolic acid, it also has soothing licorice root extract and moisturizing glycerin, plus silk proteins.

Refreshments Luscious Hand Cream in Citrus Spritz, 2 oz – Retail Value $8

Ipsy has really been pushing Refreshments as an add-on subscription to your monthly Glam Bag, but I lack enthusiasm about receiving a product from them as one of my five Glam Bag products. At least it’s full-size. The citrus scent reminds me of lemon-scented Pledge (which I've always found pleasant), and it absorbed quickly into my hands without leaving a greasy residue behind.

Pyunkang Yul Highly Moisturizing Essence Sheet Mask, 2 ct – Estimated Value $3.80 (buy 10 for $19)

I’ve used these sheet masks before, and I like them so much that this actually was my choice item for the month. The brand's toner essence is a favorite of mine, and these sheet masks are made with that same essence that I love. When I wear these sheet masks, it feels like I applied a hydrating and nourishing hug to my face- what’s not to love?

M·A·C Stack Mascara in Superstack Micro Brush, 3 mL – Estimated Value $7 (buy the 12 mL version for $28)

This was really interesting to me- this MAC mascara can be purchased with a micro brush for shorter lashes (or the lashes on your lower lash line), or a “mega” brush for longer lashes (or the lashes on your upper lash line). Even though this is technically the micro brush version and I don’t have lashes that I would call short, I still used this on all the lashes I have attached to my face when I tried it out. I really like how it made my lashes look- it gave me a boost of length and volume without clumping, and I thought my lashes looked fluttery. A few hours into my day, though, I noticed that this had smeared on my top eyelid. It wasn’t super bad (and not enough to keep me from using this again in the future), but this definitely isn’t a sweat/high humidity-proof mascara.

Prestige Cosmetics Waterproof Automatic Eyeliner in Bronze, 0.1 oz – Retail Value $8

This is an impressively creamy eyeliner for the $8 cost, and I love that I received this pretty bronze shade instead of a standard black. I didn't realize it was waterproof until I sat down to write this review- no wonder it didn't budge once it was applied to my eyes. Plus, it still washed away well when I used my double-cleanse routine (a cleansing balm and then gel cleanser)- I don't like when an eyeliner or mascara refuses to wash away and then I'm stuck with raccoon eyes.

Here I am wearing the eyeliner and mascara.

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $13

Value Breakdown:

  • Alpha-H: $27 → $6.52
  • Refreshments: $8 → $1.93
  • Pyunkang Yul: $3.80 → $0.92
  • MAC: $7 → $1.69
  • Prestige Cosmetics: $8 → $1.93

This month everything in my Glam Bag added up to $53.80, which is pretty great for a $13 subscription box. Alternatively, it breaks down to paying $2.60 per item, not including the actual bag.

Key Takeaways

This month's IPSY bag was solid. I think I would be more excited if the hand cream was replaced by a brand that wasn't an IPSY house brand, but overall, all of the products honestly worked well and I don't have any real issues to complain about (especially for a $13 bag). The value this month was felt on par with what I have come to expect with this subscription (pleasantly high for the $13 box cost, but nothing crazy). IPSY is one of the most affordable subscription boxes out there, and I love being able to look forward to getting my new bag every month (and being able to select one item in each month's bag, too).

Don’t forget the Ipsy Glambag is $14.99 now NOT $13.00! Plus tax which for most of us is Approximately $1.40.

It’s $13.00 plus a $1.99 handling charge. To say it’s $14.99 wouldn’t be entirely accurate.

I disagree. Unless you pre-pay for an annual subscription, it is indeed $14.99. Most people include shipping as part of the subscription price. To not include it would be inaccurate.
The most honest presentation of IPSY”s pricing structure would to include both single-bag-purchase pricing and annual pre-paid pricing, because effectively there is a tiered pricing structure.

Skip the Refreshments deodorant. I applied it after I shaved (hours after, not right after) and it burned so badly I had to wipe my underarms with a diaper wipe to remove it.

Nan

I really like the Refreshments hand creams.

My bag came without the starfish. I tried to request a replacement, but they didn’t send the right one. 🙁

They will claim that they are out, but in a few months they’ll sell it as a mystery bag.

If it’s any consolation, the starfish is “hollow” on the other side. Both reviewers on MSA showed it only from the pretty side.

Since July 1st (or Aug) they’ve added on a $1.99 processing fee. Count tax on top of that and its now over $16 a month for the small bag. (except any areas with no or very low tax)
MSA should include the new fee, at the very least.

Hi Mzbev,
I’m sorry about that; I must have missed that announcement and I apologize. I’ll make sure my next review includes this processing fee.

Rosemary

The processing fee is waived if you pre-pay for an annual subscription (which is the only reason I am now on an annual plan).

I also received this hand cream, and I agree with you that it smells like a housecleaning product (compare with the gentle scent of citrus hand creams from, say, Bath and Body Works). I’m also in agreement with you that it’s really annoying how Ipsy keeps stuffing Refreshments and Complex Culture products into our bags. Quality isn’t the point here – it’s that it’s their house brands. When BeautyFix started doing that, people voted with their wallets. When Glossybox tried doing that, they heard our opinion loudly. I use hand cream every day, but this one will be shoved to the back of the supply shelf.

Hi Dea!
Is it bad that I have fallen in LOVE with the complex culture makeup brushes? The grey ones specifically- I would be happy to receive more every month 🙊
