It may seem early to start talking about midsummer — it's not even July yet! — but when you add a capital M, you get Midsummer, a special celebration in Sweden (and other European countries) that is marked in June every year. The holiday dates all the way back to the Stone Age, and it just so happens to be the them of the June Norlii box, which has everything you need for a summery lunch, save for the eats.
What's Inside the Box
This month's box had five different goodies packed inside with a total value of $117.
Salad Bowl, Bitz — listed price $45
You can't have a meal without something to put it in, and this stoneware salad bowl has a light color that will fit with just about any table setting. It's made by Bitz, a company which Norlii subscribers know a little bit about — they made the egg cups included in the October box. What can you make for your first meal with this bowl? There's a beetroot and apple salad recipe included in your box to get you started!
Salad Set, Sagaform — listed price $45 (set of 2)
You can't have salad without salad utensils, and this set of two spoons has solid oak handles that give a more "hygge" touch to counter the stainless steel. I found the spoons to be well-crafted, and the hole in the second allows your extra dressing to drain out. Be prepared to handwash these – the oak will not withstand your dishwasher.
The Trivet, Zone Denmark — listed price $10
I don't know how it happens, but I always seem to have more hot bowls than trivets, so I was happy to find this shell-shaped trivet stocked in the box. Although it's more decorative than functional at summertime — salad isn't exactly going to burn my tabletop — the simple design made for a nice sea-inspired touch. If you got the April 2022 box, Zone Denmark may ring a bell. They made the stylish watering can included in the box!
The Flower, lb Laursen — Listed Value $10 (similar found here)
This was my least favorite item in the box — a fabric and plastic flower, Norlii says this is meant to symbolize the flower crown worn by Swedes at Midsummer, but it felt a little out of place for me and definitely didn't seem to be worth $10!
The Scala Jar, Holmegaard — Listed Value $17
I told you my least favorite, but I'm happy to follow it up with my favorite item stocked in the Norlii box — this beautiful glass jar! This reminded me of the jars my family used to store dry goods when I was a child, and I can't wait to fill it up with salt to keep it safe from the summer humidity! There's even an herb salt recipe in the Norlii box that I'm curious to try.
Was This Box Worth It?
Norlii raised the price of its bimonthly box — it's now $74.90 with $12.95 shipping to the US (formerly $69.95 with $9.95 shipping) earlier this year. But with items valued at $117 for the $69.95 box price, even when you add in that $12.95 shipping, you're still getting a hefty discount overall. Even if you take out the flower (I would have), you're still getting a great price for a nice table setting.
Subscribers also get a chance to shop the Norlii Scandinavian Store with 20% off more goodies that fit the Midsummer theme and complement your box!
