First Impressions

Is anyone else on the countdown to summer? After what seems like a 10-month winter, I am ready to ditch the snow and chilly temps in exchange for some sunshine and 70s! With only a couple weeks left of school, we are anxiously awaiting our 13 weeks of freedom. Universal Yums arrived just in time to aid in our countdown 'til summer vacay fun through a variety of tasty snacks. Read below to see what we thought of this month's treats.

What's Inside The Box

Every month we receive a fun, illustrated map that shows where our Yums are coming from. This month, our brightly colored map depicts The United Kingdom with a variety of trivia. The backside hosts the usual Yum Scoreboard and scavenger hunt. Also included in this box is a lovely pamphlet that guides you through each country via trivia, recipes, photography, and activities, along with a cool sticker. Not only is this box tasty, but it's educational as well!

Pickled Onion Rings - Buy a pack of 3 for $5.10

Besides being deliciously pickley, these little round rings have an unmistakable onion and vinegar flavor to them. Seriously bursting with zest, these corn rings have the texture of cheesy puffcorn, but are a lot more exciting. I’m not the biggest fan of dill pickle chips, but these onion rings are definitely addictive, being a sought-after item by all in my family. How did you feel about this pungent treat? Were they too flavorful, or just right?

Vanilla Clotted Cream Fudge - Buy a pack of 2 for $3.30

I’ve tried a variety of clotted cream fudge in my Universal Yums experiences, and I have to say, this particular UK version is my favorite. Similar to caramel, this easy to eat sweet is creamy and chewy. The name may not sound that appetizing, but I tell you what, these bites were gone in no time.

Chocolate Flapjack - Buy a pack of 2 for $2.10

Initially when I encountered this chocolatey bar, my mouth started watering for one of my mom’s Scotcheroo bars. Even though they look similar, they couldn’t be farther apart in flavor. Made from oats, this tender cake is sweet and chewy, with lots and lots of texture. The chocolate frosting is a nice touch, but I can’t say this is one treat I just have to have again. I’ll stick with those Scotcheroos!

Mini Blackcurrant Chews - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.50

Similar to Nerds in terms of shape, these little purple chews are soft in the center and bursting with blackcurrant flavor. With a sweet and sour touch, these mini treats are fun to eat and delicious - though a resealable pouch would have been nice!

Lamb & Rosemary Crisps - Buy a pack of 2 for $6.00

If rosemary is your herb, you are in luck when it comes to these chips. Packed with a powerful rosemary punch, I felt the lamb flavoring was a bit lost in the mix, but still tasty. As my husband doesn’t care for rosemary on anything, he wasn’t a fan, but the boys and I enjoyed them.

Rhubarb & Custard Bonbons - Buy a pack of 3 for $4.20

I was definitely in a mood for sweets when I opened this box, so I was thrilled to see more of these rhubarb and custard bonbons. Though they are a repeat, this is one treat I can’t get enough of. Rhubarb isn’t a flavor that is incorporated into candy often, and it’s kind of a shame. Tart and sweet, these miniature bonbons are chewy and easy to eat - a definite win!

Treacle Toffee

Toffee is one of my very favorite types of candy, and this slab of hard, chewy toffee had a bit of a twist… the inclusion of molasses! Because of this added ingredient, I felt this gave the toffee flavor more depth, and was very luxurious tasting. The only thing bad about this treat is we only received four!

Prawn Cocktail Spirals - Buy a pack of 2 for $4.00

I am not a fan of seafood, so I was a little hesitant to try this pink bag filled with prawn cocktail spirals. The summary in the pamphlet said there was no shrimp in these spirals, so I went ahead and gave them a whirl, and guess what? They weren’t that bad! When looking up “prawn cocktail” I found a recipe for a mayonnaise, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce mixture. This sort of coordinates with the saucy flavor and paired well with the potato spirals!

Oat Biscuits - Buy a pack 2 of for $4.00

Just like the booklet described, these oat biscuits are crispy, crumbly, and delicious. Not overly sweet, they don’t have the typical texture of a traditional oat cookie and are perfect paired with a cup of coffee or tea. I personally loved these biscuits, and have another package in my Yum Shop cart as we speak!

Cheddar & Onion Crisps - Buy a pack 2 of for $5.80

Made with locally sourced cheddar cheese, these yummy potato chips are flavored with the perfect amount of onion and salt. Crunchy and crisp, these have the texture of a Lay’s Original chip, with a lot more flavor. Yum Shop worthy? I think so!

Wine Gummies - Buy a pack of 2 for $6.20

While I have tried a few different alcoholic flavored desserts in my day, I have never come across a gummy form. With varying shapes and colors, these hard little gummies all taste a smidge different, and most are pretty good. They are non-alcoholic, so my son did try one and thought they were okay but didn't go in for seconds. Would I rush to the Yum Shop to buy these? No, but they were fun to try.

The Verdict

This month we felt Universal Yums was a good mix of sweet and savory snacks. We were definitely into the varying flavors and ingredients and loved "traveling" through the United Kingdom via way of snacks. We enjoyed almost every treat, some more than others, but nothing went to waste. Paired with the pamphlet, playlist, and trivia, we had a wonderful family night, and learned a lot. Where do you think we will be headed next month? Any guesses?

We just had our box last night, and the pickled onion rings were the only thing that was a big no for me. Everything else was good although I wasn’t blown away by anything. That Nerds-like candy was a pleasant surprise too.

I devoured the wine gummies!! Gummies are my favorite type of snacks. The cheese and onion chips were too oniony for me. I still have a lot to try, but I know they will be tasty!

Yums is the only subscription box I get anymore so always look forward to your reviews, Becca. My family & I liked the UK box, despite my disappointment that it came in Yums’ “no-chocolate” season b/c the Brits can do chocolate very well. Oh well, maybe next time… 🙂
