IPSY is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. For $13 per month, you get five full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag.

This is one of our top recommendations if you are looking for a subscription box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (FYI – Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes).

First Impressions

Your IPSY Glam bag will come in their standard pale pink bubble wrap mailer. When you open it up, you can always expect to find a makeup bag storing your new beauty products and an info sheet with additional details.

Every month you receive a makeup bag in addition to your five products. This month's bag was a gorgeous purple floral makeup bag with a rose gold zipper pull.

The Breakdown – What’s Inside My May 2022 Ipsy Bag

Kinship Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturizing Sunscreen, 0.26 oz - Estimated Value $3.86 (buy the 1.75 oz version for $26)

I actually already own the full size of this sunscreen, and I specifically chose the sample as my choice item this month because I wanted to have a mini handy for travel. This is a 100% mineral sunscreen made with zinc oxide, and it has the slightest peachy pearlescent tint to it that leaves my skin glowing. It's incredibly hydrating to my skin, too.

The Nue Co Barrier Culture Cleanser, 15 mL - Estimated Value $5.25 (buy the 120 mL version for $42)

This is a cleanser designed to rebuild your skin's microbiome and keep your moisture barrier healthy. It's a soap-free formula made with a proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics to keep your skin healthy, clean, and calm. While I can be pretty picky with cleansers, this one is right up my alley, and my sensitive skin really liked how gentle it was.

Purlisse Perfect Glow BB Concealer in Fair, 5 mL - Estimated Value $14 (buy the 10 mL version for $28)

This sample is half the size of the full-size concealer, which really just makes me not want to buy the full-size version because it's so small.  This is a lightweight hydrating concealer that looked nice when applied all over my face, which is another reason the small size wouldn't work for me (I believe the standard concealer size is 15 mL). This sample is great for travel or stashing in my purse, though, and the shade "fair" worked really well for my skin tone.

Kensie Sunkissed Beauty Fragrance, 10 mL - Estimated Value $8.50 (buy the 80 mL version for $68)

I give points to IPSY for effort and for including a fragrance in this month's bag, but I didn't actually like this smell that much. I did get a hint of the summer vibes this perfume was trying to encapsulate, but somehow the blend of green leaves, mandarin zest, and gardenia was not a winner for me (I blame the gardenia). The wear on this perfume was shorter than average but not terrible; however, I'll be passing this along to a friend.

Pink Lipps Lumi Balm Lip Tint in Dream, 0.12 oz - Retail Value $12

This lip balm was a collab between the brand and IPSY, which is nice but I don't know how necessary it was considering how many tinted lip balms already exist (didn't I just get one last month?). The shade "Dream" is a sheer pink that added a hint of color to my lips, and while it was nice, I didn't find this lip balm to be especially hydrating or nourishing. Personally, I wouldn't pay $12 for this.

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $13

Value Breakdown:

  • Kinship: $3.86 → $1.15
  • The Nue Co: $5.25 → $1.56
  • Purlisse: $14 → $4.17
  • Kensie: $8.50 → $2.53
  • Pink Lipps: $12 → $3.58

This month everything in my Glam Bag added up to $43.61, which is pretty solid for a $13 subscription box. Alternatively, it breaks down to paying $2.60 per item, not including the actual bag.

Key Takeaways

This month's IPSY bag was solid, but it wasn't my favorite. I'm happy to have a mini of the Kinship cleanser and to try out the cleanser and concealer, but the fragrance and lip balm fell a little flat. That's the nature of the subscription box game, though, and I still am excited for what my June bag will hold (and I'm super stoked about my June choice item). IPSY is one of the most affordable subscription boxes out there, and I love being able to look forward to getting my new bag every month (and being able to select one item in each month's bag, too).

Other Things You Should Know

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but sign up now to get the June bag!

Am I able to customize my bag? Yes, towards the end of each month you are given the ability to choose one product to be included in next month's Glam Bag!

I liked my May bag overall, though it could have been better. Plus, the bag itself is so pretty!

I got a Complex Culture mini eyeshadow quad palette, and I always like getting the quads since they are great for travel kits. I’m going to guess RV is around $6.

I also got a tiny sample of H20 moisturizing gel cream. Of course it’s not fully full, so I would halve the supposed $8.40 RV and put it closer to $4. I like moisturizers though and H20 is pretty good.

I saw my first tool in a while, a pair of MOTD tweezers. The color is pretty and they work very well! This went from a ‘meh’ to the hit of the bag for me once I tried them. RV $12

Then was my pick, the Tarte awake lip therapy mask. Unfortunately, the sample is very tiny. Estimated RV $3.

My last item was a very pigmented blush by Treluce. The sample size doesn’t seem much smaller than the full size so I’d guess around $12 RV. The shade isn’t the best for me but it’s not like anything I have, so it’s a good pick.

I’d put the RV around $37, a bit on the low end, but the picks were decent. And I’m very excited for June as their picks for me were great! I’m hopeful this means customization is getting better as the overall value has been dropping. (I used to get $60-$80+ RV bags from Ipsy, that keeps lowering and lowering and there are far fewer deluxe and full size picks now.)

I got the full size of that cleanser in my GBX some time ago and was pleasantly surprised. Most cleansers strip my (dry) face, but not this one. I’m still working my way through the bottle – a little goes a long way! I ended up getting the one you got as an add-on to use for travel.
