Kiwi Crate is a subscription box for kids ages 5-8 from the parent company KiwiCo. It arrives every month with all the materials and instructions needed to complete 2-3 crafts centered on a theme, plus additional materials to help educate young learners!

This review is of KiwiCo's Kiwi Crate (for ages 5-8), which costs $19.95 per month.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

I knew that the cute little critters we would be creating to roll down our ramps would appeal to my daughter. This looked like another fun box that would inspire her!

What's Inside This Box

This booklet highlights our theme for the month and it includes colorful, detailed illustrations to go along with our easy-to-follow instructions. On the back of the booklet, they include their social media links and a sticker for this month’s project. It looks like we have a few different projects to build this month.

This is the little sticker chart we received in our first Kiwi Crate along with our welcome note that we can add our sticker to.

Our Kiwi Explore! magazine is always a nice bonus complete with a comic and some extra activities that really enhance our lessons each month! It's educational and full of fun and useful activities for us to try.

This month we received various materials to create our wooden ramps along with some large marbles.

They also provided a ton of smaller pieces, adhesive foam, rubber bands, foam wedges and cubes, and three ink pads in red, yellow, and green.

Activity 1: Rock'n'Roll Ramps

The first step was to set up our ramp bases by adding the felt strips to the marked spots on our two green ramp bases. Then we simply placed the wooden ramp over top of it.

We also created a double ramp by connecting the wooden pieces and then using a rubber band to secure them together.

Activity 2: Moving Mice

Next, she had to make some mice to utilize the ramps. There were two paper mice that were folded up into shape and then taped to stay in place. Then we added the marbles to the bottom hole so that they would roll.

She tested out her mice on the double ramp and then split them apart so that they could race with the differently weighted marbles they provided. She had some fun putting the foam "cheese" wedges at the bottom so that they could crash into them. There were also a few fun game ideas that we could try with them later.

Activity 3: Walking Animals

Next, it was time to make some walking animals. First, she folded up the horse figure and added his legs before setting him on the ramp.

The way his feet were shaped made it so that he actually traveled down the ramp which was really cool to see.

Here he is in action.

Next, she got to create her own walking animals. They provided legs and bodies to make three more along with 2 pairs of wings. She shared with her brother and they each got to work using the stencils and ink pads to stamp some fun designs onto their animals.

They turned out pretty cute!

Then it was time to test all of the walking animals on the ramps.

As most of our Kiwi Crate projects do, this turned into a fun play session for her and her brother as they used the ramps, the mice, walking animals, and cheese to play. I love how creative they get and I love the way KiwiCo inspires them!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $19.95

We got to learn about ramps while making some of our own and the learning inspired some experimental play as we tested out varying heights and lengths of ramps. I'd say any box where learning and fun can happen is certainly worth it!

Key Takeaways

This was another well-organized box with engaging projects that also taught my daughter something. She loved being able to design her own walking animals and had so much fun playing with everything after we were done creating!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
