First Impressions is a series that introduces and reviews new brands to My Subscription Addiction, drawing from readers' requests for an insider's first look. Interested in seeing more reviews from this brand, or have another box in mind that you'd like to see reviewed? Let us know in the comments.

Seeing as I am on my fourth pregnancy, I thought it would be fun to check out a new baby box! I have tried several over the years, but I loved the idea of Baby Discovery Box and how they have a full year of boxes planned out for baby's first year of life. I think this could be incredibly useful for first-time parents, and would make such a nice gift for them! This review will show everything that is in Box 1 in their 12 box series.

What's Inside Baby Discovery Box 1?

At the top of our box was a little card with their logo and their social media information.

Baby Stage Cards

This little set of cards gives us an introduction to the box along with some guidance for whichever developmental period of baby's life the box pertains to. In this case, for a newborn, they discussed the idea of bonding and talking to our baby. I love that they include these little tidbits aimed at guiding us through motherhood!

Swaddle Blanket by Baby Discovery Box

I think a nice big muslin swaddle is probably at the top of the list of baby necessities. My babies all enjoyed being swaddled, and I love the versatility of these! Not only can they help keep baby warm and cozy, they also make excellent nursing covers or even lightweight protection over a carseat from the elements if you're in a pinch. The 100% cotton material is very thin and breathable, and this particular design is so cute with the elephants and giraffes. It's a perfectly neutral blanket too, making it perfect for just about any baby! It is a good size and it washed up nicely. This one is from Baby Discovery Box so there is no value listed, but I would estimate it's value at about $10, even though the pricing on these can really vary, especially since they usually come in a multi-pack if you purchase them on your own.

Little Jurassics Chomps Dino Soothing Blanket by Manhattan Toy Company - Retail Value $16.99 (on sale for $14.43)

Manhattan Toy Company makes the softest stuffed animals and this little toy is no different! I love the soft texture of this cute dino's fur, and the fact that it has a little silicone teether on it makes it another versatile baby item. The small size and triangle shape make it lightweight and easy for little hands to grasp without worrying it's going to smother them when they inevitably put it against their face. The teething ring is also removable so you could use it alone, or just take it off for easy cleaning!

Fabric and Wooden Ring Teether

This little teether features a wooden ring and a removable piece of fabric (easy-washing) that makes a nice crinkle sound that will be fun for baby. I love the soft minky fabric on one side with the smoother fabric on the other which adds even more texture to this toy. This one is not branded, but similar styles like this one retail for about $13-14.

Hello, Garden Bugs by Julissa Mora - Retail Value $7.95

I know that my babies have always responded well to high-contrast books like this one, and I think this is a cute book that will grow with them, too! My older kiddos would still enjoy reading this with me, and I would enjoy pointing out the varying textures throughout!

Gem Pen

The last item in the box is the little gift for mom. This pen is cute and will definitely come in handy, because I am forever losing my pens! I love that they include a little something for mom too, although I feel like this is more of a bonus item.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

I am having such a tough time with the value of this box. From the few items with retail values that I was able to verify, we get $24.94, and then with a rough estimate of $24 for the blanket and teether that brings us to a total of $48.94 for a $60 (with free shipping) box. I kind of see the cute pen as more of a bonus item and not something that would add a ton of retail value, although I definitely find some added value in the curation and the fact that they have researched and chosen these items to be developmentally appropriate. But is that a full $11 worth? As a first-time parent trying to navigate the new world of parenthood, I would probably say yes, but as a fourth-time parent, this box could have used just one more thing to really round it out value-wise!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I’m having a little trouble with you math calculation. You have $24.94 for the book and chomp the dinosaur blanket, then you add on $24 for the swaddle and call the total price $48.94. However, you did not include the $13 price of the teether into this calculation. So that actually brings your price to $61.94 for a $60 box with free shipping. Given that item you missed-it is a good value for the price! Along with the fact that every box is age specific and we provide mom with lots of free resources for the tips and help with that first year. We ship most boxes 2nd day air and are able to ship to Hawaii and Alaska for no extra charge which makes it a great value for new moms in those states!
